The education of 16-18 year olds, adults following a basic skills course leading to a recognised qualification, adults on a first full Level 2 programme and those aged 19-24 on a first full Level 3 programme are the key priorities for funding. Students on these programmes or those receiving the benefits listed on page 4 do not pay tuition fees. South Downs College will continue to offer a wide choice of adult programmes beyond these priorities but the Government’s Skills Strategy recognises that there is a balance of responsibility between the state, the employer and the individual for meeting the costs of learning. In allocating budgets to all colleges, the Skills Funding Agency assumes a fee level that colleges will charge students. Those in receipt of an income-based benefit pay no tuition fees. Over the next few years the Government requires the taxpayers’ subsidy to be reduced and for individuals and employers to make a greater contribution to the cost of their courses. For the majority of courses in the 2011-12 academic year fees will be based on a £2.60 per hour cost and for most students who come to the main College campus for a two-hour session, the evening will cost £5.20, and include free parking and access to computers, as well as Learning Resources Centre and Cafés. The College will continue to offer a quality learning experience that meets the expectations of our students.

MATHEMATICS - GCSE This is suitable for students who wish to develop their understanding of Mathematics and gain a GCSE Maths qualification. You need to have a good grasp of basic Mathematics and must be prepared to complete work at home. Many students find that a recent pass in Adult Numeracy at Level 2 is good preparation for this course, especially if they haven’t studied Maths for some time. Students will undertake an initial assessment to decide on the most appropriate level of course. The course consists of three modules: • Statistics and Number • Number and Algebra • Geometry and Algebra Qualifications available: AQA Modular Mathematics (4360). This is aimed at Foundation level (working towards grade C), although students may be offered the opportunity to study at the Higher Level (working towards the range of grades A*-C), depending on their initial assessment. Progression routes: Grade C in GCSE Mathematics is a minimum requirement for some degree courses and for many jobs and training courses. GCSE Advanced Mathematics may be studied by students who achieved at least a grade B. Further information: call Reception on Freephone 0800 056 0511 S123/111ASA
