Setup Maya Mental Ray Satellite Network Rendering to use the Render Farm: Mental Ray Satellite for Maya provides a distributed network rendering “assist” for individual and batch render jobs in Maya. This is not a full offline render queue as are the Bentley (MicroStation) and Maxwell Render implementations of the render farm, but it does allow nodes of the render farm cluster to process the active job in Maya – whether a single frame or a batch render animation – either along side the local computer or without it, freeing the local computer to continue working. Unlike the others however, the local Maya process remains the manager of the network rendering process, so the local computer must remain on and Maya must remain running during the complete network rendering process. There is not an offline queue like Maxwell or Bentley. That said, the process to setup and use this resource is simple. You can do this either on a school computer or on your personal laptop. 1. Download the maya.rayhosts file. This file identifies the network rendering machines. For Maya 2009: maya.rayhosts For Maya 2008: maya.rayhosts 2. Place the downloaded file into the following location: For Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\ For Macintosh: /Users/ (this is the Home icon) 3. Start Maya.
To Use Network Rendering in Maya 1. Under Render Settings, choose Mental Ray as your renderer. Network rendering only works under Mental Ray. 2. Setup all rendering setups, lights, etc. to ready the scene for rendering. (as usual)
UVa School of Architecture 3. Choose Render > Render Current Frame > ☐ Make sure to click the box next to render current frame to get to the settings
4. Check Render on Network Machines Checkbox to use the network. 5. Optionally, Render on Local Machine (your own current session of Maya) also. Using this, your machine will be rendering and the network will be rendering, adding your machine as a node in the farm process. 6. Click Render The job may take a moment to start, as your computer sends the Maya file, all textures, and other information up to the render nodes and kicks oft the process. Within a few moments you should see the render process begin, with various square “buckets” – or portions of the image – beginning to populate the rendered image. Each node on the render farm is working on up to 8 buckets at a time. NOTE: You cannot close Maya or the render window during the rendering process. Doing so will cancel the network rendering job. Mental Ray Satellite network rendering does not have a queue. NOTE: Network Rendering in Mental Ray Satellite may or may not be faster than rendering on your local machine only. This may seem counterintuitive, but in some cases, depending on complexity and file size, rendering just locally will be faster than processing on the network. It is our experience that only the most complex of rendering jobs will render faster on the network. Simple jobs do not pose much benefit because of the overhead of communicating over the network to control the job. Network Rendering may be of greater benefit also if you are working from a laptop computer where your computer is significantly slower than the network nodes, and this makes up for the lags inherent in network overhead.
