Tractor Lead/ Maintenance Lead Red Dog Farm 2014 Red Dog Farm is a 23-acre organic farm with 13 acres in vegetable and berry production. Located on the Olympic Peninsula, we are nestled in the beautiful Center Valley of Chimacum, Washington. We produce crops year-round and sell to three local farmers markets, to local restaurants and wholesalers, through our CSA program, and at our own self-serve Farm Stand. For more information about Red Dog Farm: www.reddogfarm.net We currently have one opening for Tractor Lead/ Maintenance Lead for the 2014 season. Applications are accepted and reviewed on an on-going basis until the position is filled. Position Purpose The primary responsibility of this position is to drive tractors, change implements, maintain equipment and facilities, and perform repairs within realm of experience. Additionally, there is an option to be on the field crew to ensure full time employment. The position reports to the farm owner (tractor/ maintenance) and farm manager (field work). Compensation
Compensation is an hourly wage, depending on experience and training needed. Plus, produce from the field during the time of employment.
Time Commitment
The time commitment needed is April through December 2014 at a minimum. Ideally the Tractor Lead/ Maintenance Lead would be interested and available to work for several years. Year-round is an option. This position requires on average up to 45 hours per week April- November and requires schedule flexibility around weather and repair needs. Work days are generally Monday through Friday.
Essential Job Functions
Drive tractors and change implements. Utilize innovation and creativity to improve farm equipment and systems. Perform routine vehicle, equipment and facilities maintenance. Act as a handyman around the farm; repairing, improving and building things as needed. Communicate with farm owner to discuss tractor work, equipment and repair issues, etc., as well as communicate by cell phone throughout the work day. Communicate with other tractor drivers, coordinating jobs and equipment use. Perform general hand field work, particularly harvest, but also transplanting, hoeing, hand weeding, and moving irrigation.
Qualifications Minimum: Current driver’s license and good driving record. Preferred: Two years experience on a market vegetable farm. One year tractor driving experience. Familiarity with organic production systems. Prior experience with mechanics.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Minimum: Common sense and a strong mechanical mind. Ability to think creatively and problem solve. Ability to be resourceful. Ability to communicate honestly about limitations of knowledge/ experience. Ability to follow directions. Flexibility to changing schedules and situations. Attention to detail. Ability to work independently. Preferred: Knowledge and skill in tractor driving and equipment innovation and maintenance. Understanding of plant-soil connection. Understanding of farm equipment- what it is used for and limitations. Knowledge and skill in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, general handyman repair, welding and fabrication, mechanics. Willingness to fill-in on field crew, especially for harvest.
