To the Class of 2017, you have heard on so many occasions: “Be who you are and be that well.” Let me share with you my thoughts on how to be who you are and be that well. »» First: Have passion for whatever you do in life. Fall in love with your work to where it seems it’s not work. »» Second: Always remember to thank those who help you along the way and know there will be many who will help you. »» And Finally: Continue to use prayer in your life. Prayer helps you to see the countless occasions you have each day to grow in virtue. Prayer enables you to gratefully embrace the gift of each new day as it comes. Prayer is what keeps us connected to God. Prayer is what keeps us connected to the divine in ourselves Prayer is what keeps us connected to the divine in one another. Prayer gives us the humility to acknowledge where we’ve been. Prayer gives us the gentleness to accept where we are. Prayer gives us the courage to consider where we need to go. Passion, appreciation and prayer guide us to be who we are and to be that well. It has been among the greatest blessings of my life to learn, live and work in the company of some of the most splendid Catholic educators to be found anywhere, and to have the privilege of helping many thousands of truly gifted young people learn to “Be who they are and be that well” in order to bring honor to the Master Craftsman whose handiwork we all reflect. I am so proud of St. Mary’s High School – the beacon of Catholic school excellence in our community - which is rooted in the unique spirituality of both its patrons, Saint Francis de Sales, as well as our Blessed Mother Mary. Wherever I go, I will carry with me the wonderful memories of all of the students, educators and friends I have come to know and love over my years at St. Mary’s High School. Let there be no doubt - I will forever be a St. Mary’s RAM. Respectfully in the Lord, Peter D. Morelli

Peter Morelli announced in the fall that he planned to retire at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. During his tenure, he introduced the teachings of St. Francis de Sales, launched our school motto, “Be who you are and be that well,” wrote the school’s mission statement with a strategic plan, developed a community service program and scholarship program, built the RAM center, introduced a multitude of AP classes and more. On the tech side, the school moved to an iPad program, online grading system, and other tools to enhance communication. The Lagorio bulding, Chase Athletic Center and other sports facilities were built under his leadership. Peter and his wife, Cynthia, recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. They have two grown sons and one grandson. He will continue to referee for the NFL and be active in the community.

letter from the president As I close the chapter of my 21 years as Athletic Director, I am energized to take on the next chapter in my new role as President of St. Mary’s High School. I want to thank the Board of Directors and the Diocese of Stockton for the trust and faith they have placed in me to help St. Mary’s continue its mission. I must thank all the students, parents, alumni and friends who have supported me and St. Mary’s athletics during my tenure as Athletic Director. My memories over the years and the many relationships we’ve built made the A.D. job my dream job, where I looked forward to coming to work every day. I’d like to thank Father Fallon for always being there to support me and the challenges I have faced over the years. Thank you to Peter Morelli for his friendship and mentoring. Peter allowed me to run the athletic department as I saw fit and supported my decisions, even when it was tough sledding. I am very grateful for his trust, wisdom and guidance. Thank you to all of the coaches with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working over the years. Their dedication and passion for our teams throughout each of our athletic programs has made St. Mary’s the envy of the sports community, both in our area and beyond. I want to acknowledge and thank my assistant, Barbara Harada, for her efforts in making my job doable and enjoyable. Barbara has handled the athletic department detail day to day and has played an integral role in the department running smoothly. Last but not least, I want to thank my wife, Angela, for her love and support of me in a job that dealt with many challenges and a lot of time away from home. St. Mary’s is an icon of excellence in our community with a wonderful 140+ year history. Today, we face new challenges to overcome. I plan on meeting these challenges through teambuilding skills. I’ve learned that building a successful team requires a strong foundation built upon

work ethic and enthusiasm, which we as individuals can bring to our vocations and avocations every day. Then it’s all about people working together to accomplish the goals of the institution. Everyone involved with the institution must be willing to cooperate with each other to make things work effectively and efficiently. Each individual must be loyal to the institution and have a passion for its best interests. This loyalty is based on duty, devotion, faith and commitment. Through teamwork, we can best face the challenges ahead and ensure the strongest foundation to build upon our past success. Please join me in bringing our community together to do great things for our students and our school. At the heart of our mission is our deep love of St. Mary’s High School. I look forward to seeing all of you and developing the relationships which will not only carry St. Mary’s High School to the next level, but ensure its success for generations. principal’s message Working Together – The Catholic Way
Kathy Smith
Citing the words of St. Francis de Sales, “Do ordinary things extraordinarily well” is a quote I feel best describes everyone’s approach here at Saint Mary’s High School. We are blessed to have a community who has faith, trust and a commitment to who we are as a college preparatory high school. It is your belief in SMHS and our values that help to sustain our school. It is my guarantee to you that we will always base our decisions on what is best for our students. Saint Mary’s High School is dedicated to the academic excellence that prepares each of our
students for college and for a life that reflects our Christian principles. The integration of Christian truths and values, within the framework of learning experiences, characterizes our educational approach. Our curriculum is constantly being evaluated so that our students will have the opportunity to develop within this Christian framework, enabling them how best to contribute to the political, social, economic, spiritual, moral and intellectual life in our society. The use of iPads has allowed teachers to experience greater mobility in the classroom and to take advantage of the numerous apps that add to lessons or offer review/practice opportunities. We are working towards more technology driven lessons and in discovering

They are committed, enthusiastic and actively engaged in clubs, sports and their studies. We are excited about having more students join us next year. The STEM Club, moderated by Ms. Lasiter, brings together students that enjoy learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The goal of this club is to promote science and math through fun activities, such as engineering design challenges and exploring the world of coding. This club will build members’ confidence in their knowledge of science and math, their problem solving skills, and give them an opportunity to explore their own ideas and interests in STEM.
St. Francis de Sales Club
Members of St. Mary’s St. Francis de Sales Club gave up most of their Veteran’s Day holiday to paint and decorate the walls of the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless with murals so that the children who are at the center will have a bright and comfortable place to spend their time. The St. Francis de Sales Club, moderated by Mr. Brehm, serves the students of St. Mary’s High School by cultivating Salesian spirituality. The club focuses on the life, teachings, and writings of St. Francis de Sales and looks for ways to help others, whether fellow students or family members.

Mission Trip The Director of Campus Ministry, Mr. Kevin Costello, led students to New Orleans for St. Mary’s second mission trip. The group painted the home of a local pastor who shared his message of faith after persevering through a devastating Hurricane Katrina experience. I could not have been more proud of our students for their positive attitude, work ethic, exemplary behavior and expression of faith throughout the trip. It is an experience that will carry with all of us throughout our lives.
The mission trip to New Orleans was even better than I expected it to be. I never thought I would learn so much and become deeply attached to the culture of the city as I did. The welcoming attitude and thankfulness of the people we met made the hard work and sacrifice worth it, and I would strongly recommend this trip to anyone who is considering going.

The third annual Blue Mass, celebrated by Bishop Stephen Blaire last November, honored local law enforcement, fire fighters and emergency personnel. In the spirit of the holiday season, the student body collected hundreds of toys for the Stockton Police Youth Activities Toy Drive, CHiP’s for Kids Toy Drive and Taylor Elementary School. Additionally, students organized a “Jean Day” and collected $508 for the American Legion Karl Ross Post 16.

I recently got the opportunity to witness the unique graduation of our Class of 2017. There are many virtues that are often praised at the occasion of graduation: academic excellence, athletic prowess, selfless service to the community. St Francis de Sales, our Patron, would emphasize that in addition to virtues that are often the most noticeable and laudable, there are also many “little virtues” that may garner less fanfare but are no less valuable. One of these such virtues is that of tenacity. While often associated with assertiveness or aggressiveness, at its heart, tenacity stems from a rather simple action: taking hold. Indeed, this action of taking hold is emblazoned on the Oblate’s and Saint Mary’s High School’s’ emblem in the motto, Tenui Nec Dimittam, “I have taken hold and will not let go.” (Song of Solomon 3:4) Especially in the often tumultuous teenage years, taking hold often begins with a tentative grasp, as students seek to find hold of their identity, the values that they will choose to live by, of the relationships that will nurture their growth. It is difficult however, to grasp something one finds difficult to see. As our founder, Blessed Louis Brisson liked to emphasize that even the most troubled students have the presence of God within them; the task of the educator is to help the students see it in themselves. If they can see this, then maybe the grasp can become a firm steadfastness to an inner conviction that may be bent and tried by circumstance, but never broken. When our students took hold of their diplomas, and celebrated through dancing, hat-tossing, and singing of their alma mater, we hope that their celebration is rooted in having found something, throughout or even because of challenges or difficulties, that they can truly take hold of for the rest of their lives: They are sons and daughters of God, and God will never let go of them.
St. Francis de Sales Mass
Fr. Fallon dedicated the statue of St. Francis de Sales at the annual St. Francis de Sales Mass. The sculptor and artist who designed and made the statue, Mr. Tony Ramirez ’69, was present to celebrate the event, joining the Oblates of St. Francis De Sales.

Honor the memory of your loved one and help a student who has lost a parent with a Tribute Gift. Memorial Gifts Program
A tribute gift is a special way to honor or remember a loved one. Upon receipt of your contribution an acknowledgment card will be sent to the person designated, stating that a donation has been received in their honor. When you honor the memory of a deceased person, you help a student who has lost a parent. Memorial gifts may also benefit scholarships and departments. St. Mary’s living benefactors are remembered at Mass on the First Friday of each month. The names of the deceased are inscribed in our In Memoriam book and are remembered in a special Mass on the third Wednesday of each month in the St. Mary’s Chapel.
