Mikhaylov ABSTRACT: The monograph discusses the theory of transient one-dimensional heat conduction processes occurring in plane one- and two-layer plates at various boundary conditions on the skin and the heat-resistant coating. Solutions a r e given for transient temperature fields in porous walls cooled by a forced flow of a cooling medium. Formulas for determining thermal s t r e s s e s are also given. Detailed tables of the roots of characteristic equations and initial temperature amplitudes facilitate the use of these equations in practical computation. The solutions may be applied to designing heat shields in aircraft and rockets, or to other branches of engineering. The book i s of interest to a wide range of heat transfer engineers and graduate students. FOREWORD Heat transfer in a solid interacting with its environment can be thoroughly studied and analyzed by means of the theory of heat conduction. The theory was first introduced by Fourier in his classic book [l]. Gigantic strides have been made since, and now the theory deals with one of the most thoroughly studied aspects of mathematical physics.

Certain processes in contemporary technology involve such intense heat generation as to cause the collapse of strength and hardness of the hollow shell (skin). This can be prevented by devising a suitable method of thermal shielding [2] such a s the application of a heat-resistant coating to the skin, or cooling of its internal surface, known a s porous cooling. This monograph investigates the transient temperature fields encountered in such cases. Formulas a r e given for determining thermal stresses. The problems a r e solved by Laplace transformation. Inversion can be performed in two ways [3, 41. One way is to calculate the integral over a complex plane within the poles of the integrated function. The position of the poles is determined from the roots of the transcendental equation. This method yields the conventional solution in the form of infinite series with exponential terms vanishing in time, which involves cumbersome computations. This is why, unfortunately, these solutions are regarded as inapplicable in engineering practice. This view however, disregards the possibilities of modern computer technology.

The other method of inversion involves the expansion of the integrated function in an exponential series. It requires finding the roots of transcendental equations and leads t o solutions which converge well for small time values, as a matter of fact, they converge the better, the smaller the time.

In this monograph the problems are solved by both methods. The solutions were tabulated by the electronic computer "Minsk-2. r 7 Detailed original tables of the roots of characteristic equations and initial temperature amplitudes a r e attached. In most cases the solutions have also been represented graphically. All this facilitates the carrying out of swift engineering computations. The solutions of all problems a r e given in dimensionless form, best suited to show the intimate relation between different physical processes. Hence the tables can be used also for computing some problems in diffusion and heat and mass transfer, for example, such as cooling of metal castings in sand molds, etc. The author is indebted to Academician (of the Bielorussian Academy of Sciences) A. Convection, conduction and radiation are the basic processes of heat transfer [5]. Purpose of this book is to investigate the convective heat transfer in shells. It is assumed that the heat enters the shell by means of the other two forms of heat transfer. The relation between temperature, time and distance follows from the solution of the differential Fourier equation [3]

In the shells investigated below, the ratio of thickness to the radius of curvature is so small that they can be regarded as plane plates. If thickness of shell is considerably smaller than its other two dimensions, it can be assumed in most cases that the heat flow i s normal to the surface. For uniform heat flow, Eq. (1-1)takes the form

The boundary conditions must be known to determine the temperature field. We shall investigate three different ways of assigning boundary conditions

The heat transfer coefficient depends. on many factors: the type of cross section in the boundary layer, the velocity, pressure and temperature gradients in the boundary layer and on the surface of the body, etc. Therefore, it i s not a constant; in this book, however, in the first approximation it is taken to be invariable. This is a commonly used device. 2.

THE LAPLACE TRANSFORMATION

The problems studied in this book a r e solved by the integral transformation introduced by Laplace in 1779 [ 6 ] :

3. METAL SKIN WITH AN INTERNAL HEAT INSULATING LAYER Modern aircraft fly at speeds several times greater than the speed of sound. Drastic air compression and friction of skin with air release large amounts of heat. The boundary layer is heated to high temperatures, and this generates nonuniform temperature fields and thermal stresses in the skin [8].

During short flights the thermal insulakion under the skin can protect inner sections from overheating. This means that, roughly speaking, on the boundary layer between skin and insulation the heat flow is fully retarded. Such an approximation facilitates the mathematical solution of the problem since it amounts to solving the problem of symmetrically heated plates. The temperature field of a symmetrically heated plate has been thoroughly investigated by heat conduction theory [3]. The analytical solution determines the plate's dimensionless temperature at a constant temperature of the surrounding medium as a function of the Biot number, the Fourier number and the dimensionless coordinate t. The formula for [ = 0 and 6 = 1 was numerically solved by Grtiber [9, 101 and given in diagrams [lo] in which the Bi values a r e plotted on the abscissa with Fo a parameter. Bachmann [ l l ] continued these computations, and in his diagrams the quantity Bi2Fo is plotted on the abscissa with Bi as a parameter. Heissler [12] computed dimensionless temperature 8 for a wider range of Bi and Fo numbers, and plotted Fo on the abscissa taking Bi as a parameter. Nomograms for determining temperatures on the surface and in the center of aplate were compiled by &&in [13]. Similar graphs for [ = 0.2; 0.4; 0.6; 0.8; 1 are given in [14]. This fundamental problem of unsteady heat conduction was solved recently by an electronic computer. The results are given by Grigull [151, [16]. Thermal s t r e s s e s are determined by using the analytical solution for the temperature field of a symmetrically heated plate. In [8] T and a are taken to

be constant. For the case of a plate fastened, which precludes bending, [17] gives the curves of s t r e s s variations on the heated surface for 0 5 Fo 5 0.2 for different Bi values. In the same work one can find the curves for changes in maximum stress on a heated surface in terms of the Biot number. These stresses on a heated surface a r e the highest in a plate. Reference [18] gives the curves of stresses on a heated surface in terms of the Fo parameter for /I1 both a loose plate and a fastened one to prevent bending. Reference [19] studies the case of T linearly changing in time for a! = const; here, both Tr and a! r change linearly. The solution given in [ZO] is closest to reality and, therefore, most complicated. T and a are represented a s the sum of a constant and two

exponential functions with a negative exponent proportional to time. The author of [20] makes the same e r r o r as the one in [21], which has been noted in [22]. We are not giving the solutions for this chapter because they a r e a special case of solutions discussed below.

4.

METAL SKIN WITH OUTER HEAT INSULATING LAYER

Solid fuel rocket engines a r e used for booster rockets, flight boosters and missiles. They develop a tremendous thrust in a very short time. Charges burning on lateral surfaces intensely heat chamber walls. New high-melting alloys for operations at temperatures above 1000°C have been investigated recently, but they do not satisfy simultaneously all the technical requirements. Thus, high heat resistance may be coupled with brittleness or intense oxidizability of the surface. Heat-resistant coatings may be used to protect metal walls [23], and the skin of aircraft [2] from heating. To determine the practical value, one must calculate the temperature of the metal w a l l protected by the coating and establish the magnitude of thermal stresses. Such stresses exist in steady or transient temperature fields if the temperature differs from the initial one. 4-1.

Mathematical Formulation of the Problem

To determine thermal stress it must be assumed that the plate is loose (not rigidly held) and free of mechanical stresses. Interaction between elasticity field and

temperature field is negligible [24, 25, 261, hence the problem of temperature distribution is investigated separately, independently of stress analysis. Since the rate of change of the temperature field is small in comparison with the velocity of sound, thermal s t r e s s e s are determined by the temperature distribution at a given time without taking the inertial forces into account.
