TUESDAY, 21 JUNE 2016 CRIME STOPPERS URGES GEELONG COMMUNITY TO DOB IN A DEALER Crime Stoppers Victoria is urging Geelong residents to report what they know about the manufacture and distribution of crystal methylamphetamine (‘ice’) and other illicit drugs to Crime Stoppers. The charity is launching its two-week intensive Dob in a Dealer campaign in the regional city today (Tuesday, 21 June) to gather information about local drug dealing activity. Dob in a Dealer was rolled-out previously in Geelong in April last year contributing to a 110 per cent increase in drug-related Information Reports to Crime Stoppers. Of the contacts made to the crimefighting charity during the campaign, there was also a 137 per cent increase in Information Reports relating to amphetamine activity. Residents are once again being urged to contact Crime Stoppers to confidentially report any information relating to people who may be bringing harmful drugs into the local community. “Information from the community leads to real results when it comes to breaking the cycle of crime,” said Crime Stoppers Victoria spokesman Chris Plumridge, “arrests are made and warrants are executed as a result of reports to Crime Stoppers. “Whether it’s a family member, a friend, a colleague or acquaintance, sadly so many of us will know someone affected by illicit drugs and the devastating impact they have on individuals, their loved ones, and our communities. “Dob in a Dealer is a community engagement campaign. It’s about empowering every member of the community to play a part in reducing the manufacture and supply of illicit drugs. “We once again urge the Geelong community to pick up the phone and call Crime Stoppers confidentially on 1800 333 000 or report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au anything you know about the manufacture, supply and dealing of illicit drugs in your neighbourhood. “Any information Crime Stoppers receives is handled in utmost confidence. You do not have to give your name or any personal details. There is no caller ID or IP tracing.” The Geelong campaign is being launched by Crime Stoppers Victoria in collaboration with Victoria Police.

TUESDAY, 21 JUNE 2016 Since April 11 Dob in a Dealer has been delivered in nine further locations - eight in regional Victoria and one in Melbourne’s western suburbs - contributing to an average 105 per cent increase in drug-related Information Reports to Crime Stoppers where campaigns have been held. In total 17 campaigns will be delivered in Victoria between April to July and more than 75 nation-wide. Victoria Police Supt for Geelong Daryl Clifton said: “We are extremely pleased that Crime Stoppers’ Dob in a Dealer campaign is returning to Geelong in 2016. “Illicit drug use and drug-related crime continues to have a significant impact on communities in metropolitan, regional and rural Victoria. “We need a whole of community approach to tackle the flow of these harmful substances in to our neighbourhoods. Dob in a Dealer provides people with a way to contribute to this fight by providing vital information about drug offending in their area to police. “The smallest piece of information can make a difference, disrupt organised crime and stop the harm drugs bring.” Methylamphetamine is a complex issue involving not only law enforcement, but is increasingly identified as a health issue. Dob in a Dealer is aimed at identifying the manufacturers and distributors of methylamphetamine and other illicit drugs, rather than the end user. Crime Stoppers is aware that some people reporting may have an existing addiction to drugs or may be family members of someone suffering an addiction. Crime Stoppers will refer those who require assistance to local health care agencies where they can discuss treatment options. If you or someone you know is affected by drug use or addiction, please contact support services such as Family Drug Help on 1300 660 068 or Youth Support and Advocacy Service on 1800 014 446.
