KATIE G. SINGING AT A FUNDRAISER FOR 911 ANIMAL RESCUE.

K

atie G won this years ‘Share Your Talent’ contest and won the prize of getting featured in Tween Girl Style Magazine! TGSM: Do you have any brothers and sisters?  Katie: I am the youngest of three. I have an older brother, Sean, who just turned sixteen. He is a sophomore in high school. I also have an older sister, Amanda. She is 18 and just left for her first year in college.  We have two chocolate labs, Murphy and Kelsey. They are a big part of our family.  And we have a little frog. He’s cool. TGSM: What is your favorite extracurricular activity?  Katie: Everything I do is either singing or writing songs or playing guitar. Sometimes I hang out with my band mates (The Originals) Steve Hawthorne, Riley Cocchi, and Jordan Green.  We order pizza, watch movies and goof around with new song ideas. When I’m not doing that, I am hanging out with my friends. My best friend, Isabella, and I do a lot together.  We vacation together and have fun sleepovers doing all sorts of fun girlie stuff. I also play basketball, love to ski and swim and go to the beach with my family. TGSM: How did you get started in singing and what type of music do you listen to?   Katie: I have always loved to sing and perform. I have pictures of me  in diapers standing on top of the dishwasher with my pink Barbie microphone. I’m sure I drove my family crazy... ha ha.

When I was about 7 years old when I started to write my own songs. I would wander around the house, singing my own song,  just making up words and melodies. I wrote the song “You’re Pretty Good at Lying” (which is the one entered in the contest) when I was 8.  I was able to finish it and record it when I started at The Original Music School.  I take voice, guitar and one-on-one song writing class at the school.  Each song I write and record are available on iTunes “Two Dice,” “Songs About You” and “Faithful” will be released later this month.   While we listen to a lot of different music, I really enjoy country music the most. TGSM: What’s your favorite thing to do with your family?  Katie: My favorite family vacation was when we went to the BVI sailing.  The water was amazing, so crystal clear and such a pretty blue!  We spent most days snorkelling and sailing around the islands. I also love taking crazy trips and going to the beach.  One thing I love most is going out to dinner with my family then coming home to a movie night. Sometimes we have appetizer nights, which is when our dinner is all appetizers. Everyone gets to pick their favorite appetizer and we all make them for dinner and watch the Giants game! My mom comes up with lots of fun family activities to make certain we have time together. Continue to page 10

TGSM: What are your favorite clothing store and your favorite outfit to wear?  Katie: I love shopping!  I love going to the mall and shopping at Abercrombie, Hollister, Madwell and Aritsia.  I really love to bargain shop.  So I spend a lot of time in Forever 21 and Francesca’s Closet – I can get great outfits and fun accessories for my performances and photo shoots.   I perform almost weekly so I have to always be putting new outfits together.  Some weeks, I feel very girly and will wear a dress with my cowboy boots. Other weeks, I may just wear a cute pair of shorts and a fun top or a pair of pants and a sparkle or lace top.   I have a vintage MTV shirt I love to wear.  High shorts have been fun to wear this summer.  I love lace tops and they look great with anything, but I love to wear them with shorts. It is a feminine look and does not make me look older then 12.  It is fun to put together different looks and not be stuck on one trend.   I wear a school uniform everyday so to be able to experiment with different looks and styles is exciting. Something I am never without when performing is my cowboy boots – they are a must! TGSM: What are your favorite colors to wear? Katie: I wear a lot of peach, beige, and white but love bright colors, too.  With my hair color and skin tone, those colors look best.  I have a rust colored tank that has gold thread through it and I wear that with white shorts and my boots. That is my favorite outfit! I also have a new flowered dress from Forever 21 that I can’t wait to wear, but if I had to pick one favorite, it would be my beige lace top.  I love it with a pair of shorts or as a beach cover-up. TGSM: Which young celebrity fashion style/music do you like the most? Katie: There are so many, I don’t know where to start.  I love Taylor Swift of course for both fashion and her music. Victoria Justice is amazing.  She has the best hair and style. Selena Gomez…I love her 10 | TGSM

music and she has such a classic style but can wear anything and look amazing. Blake Lively and Leighton Meester from “Gossip Girl” are so good at accessorizing and have the greatest style.  They can go from classic to boho chic to red carpet and always look amazing.  Even though I am country music girl at heart, I confess to loving One Direction and Hunter Hayes of course!  Favorite Country music ladies are Carrie Underwood, I love all of her songs, she is amazing. Miranda Lambert, Sara Evans – love all Sara Evans songs, Suds in A Bucket is one I just learned to play on the guitar – so fun.  I recently saw Kenny Chesney in concert and was lucky enough to be pulled down into the sand bar.  He held my hand while he sang, it was so amazing.  I am following Cassadee Pope.  She is on an amazing journey since winning The Voice.  I would love to see her in concert (hint, hint, Mom).  The Band Perry, Sugarland, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town – I love all of these bands and hope one day to see and meet them all!  TGSM: Tell us about any awards or recognition that you have

received.   Katie: Earlier this year, my band, the Originals and I were selected out of 90 acts to perform at Morristown’s Got Talent.  The theater was huge and I loved every minute of performing in front of 1800 people.  We didn’t win, but that’s OK. Now we can go back next year!  Winning Tween Girls Style Talent Contest is the first big contest I have entered, so it is exciting to win and have all the support of family, friends and fans.  I don’t know what is next but I am in the studio writing and recording ready for whatever comes my way.  TGSM: Tell us something interesting about yourself that our readers don’t already know.  Katie: I write songs with Anthony Vitale at The Original Music Schools.  Several of my songs have been released as part of a book series written by my aunt, Sarah Price, a best-selling author of Amish Christian Romances. We use the books and my songs to talk about and send messages about bullying, love, faith and friendship.  “Faithful”, “Heaven” and “You’re Pretty Good at Lying” have all been released with her books.  You can find them on iTunes and find Sara Price’s books on Amazon.com.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT WITH URBANNA CHAP PA

Talia Joy Castellano

left a legacy that will continue forever

T

alia Joy Castellano may have passed away July 16, but she left a legacy that will continue forever. Talia accomplished more in her 13 years of life than most people will in a lifetime. You may recognize this YouTube star from her makeup tutorials, which led Covergirl to name Talia an honorary Covergirl. She also has been featured on the “Ellen” show. “Talia left her handprints and footprints all over the world,” said her sister, Mattia, “Her legacy will live on.” Talia’s battle with cancer never stopped her from achieving the goals she had set. She even posted updates on her Facebook page,

‘Angels For Talia,’ sharing a bucket list of things she wanted to accomplish. Talia’s to-do list included starting an affordable fashion line. Fashion designer Urbanna Chappa is determined make that dream come true for Talia. Like others, Urbanna, also a cancer survivor, was drawn to Talia’s story. “I saw her on the ‘Ellen’ show; I was so touched by her story,” Uranna said. “It was close to home for me. I went online to look at her tutorial videos and was fascinated by her. “ Tween Girl Style Magazine interviewed Chappa more about Talia’s Bald Chick Collection and what’s next to keep the dream and legacy moving forward. TGSM: After reaching out to Talia how was that experience working with her on her fashion line? Urbanna: I talked with her mother and she said, “She is sick, can you come to Orlando?” I literally went the next week and I stayed for two weeks. I was at the hospital with her for four days and we sketched 16 pieces. At first she was a little hesitant to draw. By the second day, we were really experimenting and sketching. When I got home, I got a phone call that she was getting worse. I put the collection together in two weeks; in between those two weeks we Skyped. She was able to pick out the buttons and swatches for different fabrics, and she was very involved. I just brought it to life. It’s funny because I came into her life when I was going through something very rough. I thought I was just going to make this little girl’s dream come true. She came to my life she taught me how to love again. She taught me how the little things don’t matter, and how to leave your footprints and handprints on this earth before you go. Continue to page 13

Continue from page 12

TGSM: What have you learned from this experience? Urbanna: Since meeting [Talia], I want to change the world. I want to make dreams come true. I want to make a difference through fashion. She was such an old soul. I felt like I was working with someone who has done this before. She has been on this earth before. She knows exactly what she wants. If she didn’t like it, she would tell me. She was a business girl. She really knew her stuff. She came here to do something in the 6 years that she was battling cancer. The whole country knows who this little girl is. It is pretty amazing. TGSM: What was Talia’s goal with her new clothing line? Urbanna: She wanted everyone in the world to wear her stuff, she wanted it to be an affordable price. We both decided that Target would be suitable for accomplishing those goals. It’s been pretty crazy; I didn’t think it would get this big. …. We are just kind of waiting. As far as going overseas, we have some connections. It’s a process and it takes some time. People think the collection is out and it is going to be in stores, it is not that easy. There is a process. You have to produce. The Manufactures have done the shrink testing to make sure the clothes don’t shrink. With the stores’ return policy, it is a long process and we want the world to be patient, and we are patient. I got 1,700 emails one day. In our last conversation before [Talia] passed away, I made a promise. [Her collection is] going to get in a store.” If I have to go knock on the president of Target’s door, then I am going to do that. This little girl means so much to people; she means everything to me and we worked so hard. We have gotten so many emails from people my age that are very interested in the pieces. TGSM: How did you come up with the idea of placing Talia’s eyes on the clothing line? Urbanna: I told her that we needed something that sets her apart, and would put a stamp on the collection because she loved makeup so much. That is how people knew her. Her eyes were so beautiful. One of her mother’s best friends is a photographer who taught her how to do makeup. She also did this beautiful photography of Talia’s eyes and she said, ”You think the world is going to want to wear my eyes?” I said, ‘Absolutely.’ We did them on scarves. The shirts are amazing and we are going to do different variations inside the jacket, and the hoodie. That is her stamp. TGSM: What is the most memorable moment working with Talia? Urbanna: She has pushed me to really work hard. I just miss her, and I will never forget her, the four months that I knew her, we became so close and I got so close to her family. She has such a wonderful family. It’s a very sad story. She is doing it from up there. Her legacy is going to continue.

My V.I.P. experie n meeting Victoria ce Justice T

he experience I had winning the meet’n greet and concert to see Victoria Justice was totally surreal!  At first, my mom and I waited in a long line to meet with her and my excitement grew and grew, as we got closer.  It was finally my turn, she was so beautiful

close up, very welcoming and kind!  She even told me she appreciated me dressing up and she loved my black dress!  I could feel

my cheeks getting so hot!  I finally got the nerve to ask her some questions about being a triple threat and about her show.  She asked me how old I was, what grade I was going to be in and where I lived.  She was so surprised we came so far to see her.

I told her I was a big fan of hers, not her #1 fan because that is so cliché.  My mom then took several pictures.  After that we were

then lead over to her awesomely cool merchandise to buy before the big crowds were let in.  Next, we went to our awesome seats. The

concert was out of this world!  She sang, danced, threw flowers to concert goers, at least 10 huge inflated rubber balls bounced through the crowd and for her encore unexpected shiny confetti blasted up into the air and rained down on to all of us!  Everyone went wild!

Winning this contest was too cool and I will always remember my awesome experience.  Thank you Tween Girl Style Magazine, this

was a dream come true! – Airicah Coleman

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

Katie

24 days d a o r e h t on Nation n e e T h it w our “No Bull” T By Katie Belle Akin/ TGSM Youth Writer

I

have just returned from a 24 day tour with the Teen Nation “No

Bull” Tour. I was one of 7 artists

on the roster of this tour as we travelled

through Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi sharing our music and Anti

Bully program. This was an opportunity which allowed me to grow as an artist and connect with students in elemen-

tary and junior highs. As someone who

has been bullied, it was a wonderful way

to give back and teach some of the things which have helped me cope with bullying and influenced my song writing.

We are all aware that bullying is common is our schools today.

The students shared with us their stories and it became clear there are some common things which occur in almost all situations of bullying.

1. Bullying can be emotional as well as physical, it happens a

large amount of the time when no one is looking, even if it takes

place in front of others they can be

afraid to say anything.

2. The person being bullied is usu-

ally petrified to report it for fear of

additional bullying or they think no one

will listen to them.

3. When bullying occurs it effects the

self-esteem of the victim and can have far

reaching consequences i.e. retaliation and

in some cases suicide.

So, let me share with you all what was

presented to our student bodies during

tour as we sang music and spoke to them.

Let me ask this question, “Do you know the difference between

truth and integrity?” well, here is an explanation… Truths is what you do or say when someone is watching. Integrity is what you do when no one is watching. Bullying is a lack of integrity. I

know most of you have heard the quote, “do unto others as you would have them do to you” this is a statement of integrity. I

challenge all of you to up your level of integrity and DO THE

ARE YOU A

FANDOM?

F

andoms beautiful yet painful, it is (in my Yoda voice). Those who have no clue may call us nerds or geeks. However, we know that we are Fan WARRIORS! Fandoms are defined as group of people who share a liking for the same book, movie, band, show, etc. The more

unofficial but accurate definition is: a kingdom of overly emotional fans who devote most of their lives to books, movies, bands, shows,

etc. Our natural habitat is the online rhaesheser of Tumblr, DeviantArt, and FanFiction.net. We cry, laugh, and fuss together like family. Fan girls and fan boys are the most hardcore human beings you may ever encounter.

There are some fake fans among us. To identify a fake fan, you have to be swift and discrete. The plan is simple. Make sure you are alone

with the person. You do not want to embarrass your “fan” or as this is not our goal. Anyhow, I will use the Harry Potter fandom (consider-

ing it is my number one fandom). You ask a question regarding the answer to a widely known answer in the fandom. Like, ask how to pronounce the incantation Windgardium Leviosa (make sure you accent the on the “A” in Leviosa not the “O” and make the motion as if you

had a wand or if you have a wand). If the response is “you pronounced it right, I believe,” this person is clearly a false fan. If the response is

along the lines of, “Stop, stop, stop! You’re saying it wrong. It’s LeviOsa, not LeviosAR!” then, you have gotten yourself a true fan! Let us not

confuse a false fan with a new fan. A new fan might not know all the things about {insert book, band, movie, show, etc. here} just yet and will admit to their temporary ignorance but is it outweighed by their enthusiasm and excitement. Welcome a new fan with open arms! There is absolutely no problem with being in multiple fandoms. I mean, take me for example. I am in many fandoms!

I was literally born into the fandom life. My parents are in a

variety of fandoms, therefore I have been trained and speak the language. Even my cousin, Lenny, is in fandoms. So I had no

choice but to be a fan girl. I LOVE IT! My fandom is my fandom

(literally LOL)! We go through everything together and sure we do have our fandom battles but like in any family you still love them like the brothers and sisters I have never had.

Lisa Orchard’s Super Spies series By Rachel Pyfrom/ TGSM Youth Writer

I

f you plan to read “Super Spies” book series by Lisa Orchard’s, don’t be surprised if you develop an extreme literary appetite for Sarah, Lacey,

Jackie, and Scott. Orchard does an excellent job of keeping a consistent,

thrilling, nail-biting atmosphere.

Sarah is a complete dare devil and the group leader; Jackie, Sarah’s fash-

ion-savvy right hand. Lacey, Sarah’s little sister, the empathetic more cautious super spy and Scott, the sweetheart with all the classified information and contacts, being the chief of police’s son. It’s destined that these

four characters in this book series get trapped in risky situations occurring in their neighborhood.

This phenomenal quartet is willing to go to any lengths to restore justice and protect fam-

ily and friends. They are vibrant characters and it’s wonderful to see their personalities grow

throughout the book series, with all the chaos, supplied by a murder, a bombing, and an illegal distribution of harmful drugs, family members’ lives are put at stake along with their own. Orchard writes with a brilliancy that glues you to each book until you finish and can’t

wait to move onto the next. The delicate description of each setting and each character they encounter allows you to mentally picture a continuous image Harrisburg as if you live

there as well. You find yourself wanting to jump in and interject with your own theories

and suspicions. The brilliant descriptions are only topped with the access to the thoughts of the characters. The writing is heart-felt with realistic motivations and plots.

In this book you will find “every-day” characters that do a great job of carrying the

story. If you’re looking for a thrill of a series, I suggest having all three at hand, “The Super Spies and the Cat lady”, “The Super Spies and the High School bomber”, and

“The Super Spies and the Pied Piper.” Sit back. Calm your heart beat down. And enjoy!

H

ey Tween Girl Style Magazine fans my name is Erin and I had a

chance to catch up with Emily

Allen Lind who stars in the new movie

“Dear Dumb Diary.” This movie is about

a girl named Jamie Kelly who becomes concerned

when the arts program is in danger of being shut down due to

budget cuts. The character is determined to save what she loves. She joins a jump-a-thon to raise money so that the program can go on but, of course there are bumps along the road to success.

Erin: How was your experience of making the movie “Dear

Dumb Diary” and playing Jamie?

Emily: I had an amazing time shooting DDD and I fell in love

with the character of Jamie.  At first, I didn’t realize how much

we were alike - but during the shoot, I realized we had so many similarities - I think a lot of Jr. High kids are in the same boat ya know, trying to figure out who you are - it’s a tricky time.

Foundation for 3 years now.  I keep a box when I work on set, and I call it The Love Fund.  Cast and Crew contribute to the box every day. Sometimes I sell candy on sugar-free sets.

I love working with a charity, because when I book a job, I

feel like I’m not just working for myself, but I’m helping others too.  The Make A Wish Foundation is incredible.  It makes you so grateful just to be healthy.

Do you know the definition of bystander? This is when some-

one witnesses bullying and does nothing to stop it or doesn’t

report it. When you are a bystander you are enabling bullying to continue. Let me introduce a new word to you, UPSTANDER. The definition of Upstander is to assist someone being bullied

and/or report the incident to a teacher, older student, principle, coach etc. who can handle the situation in the best way. Every

time you are an Upstander you are stopping bullying, remember if we don’t do anything to stop bullying it will only continue. BECOME AN UPSTANDER!

Finally, for those of you reading this who is being bullied, I

know from experience it can really tank your self-esteem. Be

brave, be strong and tell someone. You may have to tell people several times, especially if it is happening when no one else is

around. If you have a cell phone, record the incident, have a friend with you, sit in the front of the bus, and don’t stay silent! I love

encouraging people I speak with to accept themselves as they are.

Everyone of us is different in a special way; we are all unique and beautiful in the eyes of our creator. BE PROUD OF YOURSELF, because that is what makes you, you!

It was such an honor to meet and share with over 30 schools.

One of the songs I sang was titled “Who I Am” I co-wrote this

song about my experiences being bullied. It is my anthem and the lyrics are very encouraging and empowering, go listen to it if you get a chance the music video can be found on my YouTube channel. I would love to chat with anyone who feels the need to talk

INTERVIEW WITH “GROWN UPS 2” CO-STAR!

ADA-NICOLE SANGER By Katie Belle Akin/TGSM Youth Writer

O

ne of the funniest family friendly movies out this summer is “Grown Ups 2.” This movie is full of well-known adult

comedians; however, one of my favorite actors in

the movie is Ada Nicole-Sanger who plays Donna

Lamonsoff! We caught up with Ada recently and

she was happy to answer a few questions for TGSM.

Ada replied with some real insight into her acting, hobbies and projects she is interested in. One

thing she said that I took note of, “I take

inspiration from everyday encounters.” Ada applies this to her

Katie: I’m so excited about

seeing the upcoming release of

“Grown Ups 2”. It’s been several

years since the first “Grown-Ups” movie, how have you changed

since then? What was the biggest challenge for you in re-creating your role?

Ada: How have I changed? I am happy to be taller, that is a

pretty big thing for me, and my family is vertically challenged.

Honestly, I’d say I’ve matured as an actress and individual. I’ve

become very comfortable with who I am and what I do. The biggest challenge in re-creating Donna was how she herself would

What you need to know before becoming a

model! T

he acting and modeling industry can be a confusing and chaotic business. That’s why you have to make sure you safe guard from money traps that may leave a hole in your pockets and no results for your aspiring young talent. Research can help you make informed decisions and prevent unnecessary spending. Here are a few tips to help you get started on a successful path. First things First: Make sure this is what you want to do and carve out time to practice your craft. You must have the passion for modeling and acting so that the natural talent in you will shine. Be true to yourself and have a positive self-image. This industry accommodates actors and models of all colors, shapes, sizes and ethnicity. Having a positive self-image will allow you to handle the rejections that are going to take place in this business. Be realistic and understand that every gig is not for you. Advertisers are seeking a certain look to promote their products and not being selected doesn’t mean you are not pretty enough. They have an image in mind before you auditioned and they are searching for a model or actor who will fit the script.

R t o h s d a He

Having a good headshot and a resume are two important things you will need to starting your modeling and acting career. This is something you can do yourself. A family member or a friend with a good camera can take a nice portrait of you. Take the photo outside for the best lighting and the best results. Avoid clothing with bold prints and don’t make the mistake of over accessorizing. For example, wearing a large hair accessory would draw attention away from your greatest asset which is you! Do wear a solid color for your photo and make sure makeup is light and natural. Say “cheese” and let your light shine with a bright pretty smile for the photo.

Castings are just that, a casting for a commercial or movie. Most reputable agencies have casting calls on local commercials and print ads. Some national clothing companies and magazines have free model search contests you can enter your kids in, and they usually are judged by modeling scouts.

Agents are not casting directors: Agents only get paid if you are booked for a modeling or commercial job.

Recognizing red flags: Beware of the “opportunist” out there who will attempt to scam parents out of money by using an emotional hook of fake enthusiasm. They will get parents to think their kid will be the next big star. Once trust is gained, they will attempt to sell you empty promises or “stuff ” you do not need. For example, everyone has heard castings over the radio and when you get there they are trying to sell you acting classes.

DON’T purchase a portfolio. A portfolio is a record of what you have done as a professional model. You will be able to compose a portfolio from your personal experiences in the industry. You will need comp cards and they are not expensive. Sites like photoscanonline.com have reasonable prices starting at $40.

DO NOT pay an agent to represent you! A SAG agent only takes a small percentage if you are booked for a project. The average amount is 18-20% or less depending on the agent and if it is a non-union or union job! Money for representation is a BIG red flag! Representation does not guarantee you book a job.

DO NOT pay to be in a magazine. A clothing designer or magazine will pay you or ask you to represent their clothes or page spread.

• Screen Actors Guild for Kids: www.sag.org/content/for-kids

Safe guard: If it doesn’t feel right, most likely it is NOT right. Make sure you have your child’s best interest at heart. Be with him or her at all times.
