PICCOLO THEATRE PRESENTS SHAKESPEARE’S TWELFTH NIGHT DIRECTED BY KAREN YATES
EVANSTON, IL: Friday, February 20 at 8:00 p.m. Piccolo Theatre will open Twelfth Night at the Evanston Arts Depot, 600 Main Street, Evanston. Twelfth Night—Shakespeare’s bestloved comedy—is now set in riotous 1968 London, when the city was at its most precarious. Viola, shipwrecked and far from her home in India, finds herself separated from her twin and in the middle of a “mod” world set a-wobble from anti-war protests, immigration issues, gay rights, and class struggles. Knowing she can find work dressed as a man, Viola dons the disguise of a foreign gentleman recently arrived from India and works for a Duke who holds court in a hip London society which is topsy-turvy with infatuation, longing, and mistaken identities. Viola soon finds herself in love with the Duke who’s in love with a Countess who is in love with…. a foreign gentleman, recently arrived from India... In this comedy, both silly and wise, Shakespeare examines the many facets of love as well as the darker aspects of human nature. “Though 1968 London is forty years and an ocean away, the concerns of that time have become (and always have been) ours. Twelfth Night captures both the joy and struggle of life, set in 1968 to heighten those aspects of the show,” says Director, Karen Yates. “Piccolo’s commitment to physical comedy allows potent ways to elucidate meaning.” Director, Karen Yates, was most recently seen in Piccolo’s Lust, Lies, and Marriage, directed by internationally acclaimed Commedia dell’Arte director, Antonio Fava. Yates recently directed the sold-out Memento Polonia, for Overdog Productions and the well-received Three Days of Rain for Actors Revolution Theatre. She trained with Obie Award winning director
