Engaged Learning Training for Schools

Around the world, educators have fixed their attention on student engagement as a means to raise achievement in, and enjoyment of, learning. Evidence shows that increasing student engagement helps build a lifelong love of learning and improves student outcomes. But understanding engagement – and the need for schools themselves to be engaging – is not a simple or cosmetic process.

Educational Arts works with schools globally to transform engagement in learning,

for students and teachers. Through leadership of the radical ‘Learning Futures’ project in the UK, innovative approaches have been developed to transform engagement. Building on what works in schools in the UK, USA and Australia, a set of practical ‘how-to’ training programmes are now available for school leaders and teachers.

The following training events can be delivered separately, or combined for a deeper experience. All can be customised to suit the needs of your school.

Engaging with Learners in the 21st Century

Understanding Project–Based Learning

This series of motivational talks, followed by facilitated discussions, confront and inspire educators to recognise the challenges, and opportunities, which exist in the unpredictable, inter–connected world facing our students. 1–2 hr sessions, suitable for educators, students and parents, can be tailored to address some, or all, of the following issues:

Project–Based Learning (PBL) is the key to unlocking student engagement. Too often, however, teachers are confused by an approach to teaching and learning which seems to lack structure and clear direction. Educational Arts have worked closely with the world’s best PBL exponents, the High Tech High Schools in San Diego, USA, in creating straightforward guides to planning for successful, rigorous, Project–Based Learning.

• The Open Learning Revolution – how technology, and social learning, have changed the way we now learn, and how our teaching has to adapt; • The Engaging School – why engagement matters, and why schools themselves need to become engaging before their students can become engaged • The Shape We’re In – how great schools around the world have radically redesigned their buildings, structure and culture to enable 21st century learning

Strategies for Enhancing Engagement

Aimed at teachers, the workshop comes in one or two-day versions. The one–day version includes: • What PBL is (and isn’t) • The key ingredients to effective PBL • How to create great projects for your students • How to plan, execute and assess your projects The two–day version includes the above, but supports teachers in preparing actual projects for use in the classroom:

This can be a half, or full-day participatory workshop. Aimed at school leaders and senior managers (but also relevant to teachers), this workshop examines: • Why engagement matters • How it supports student attainment • Why engaged students need engaging schools • Re-designing school for increased engagement

This workshop builds upon the approaches and resources developed through the Learning Futures programme. Participants will have access to supporting pamphlets, think pieces and design tools.

• How to ‘tune’ your project • Protocols to enable students to ‘critique’ their work • Rapid prototyping your project • Building in differentiation & personalisation • How to exhibit and archive your projects • Covering the curriculum

These workshops are based upon the ground–breaking teachers guide ‘Work That Matters: The Teacher’s Guide to Project–Based Learning’, developed in collaboration with High Tech High and the Innovation Unit.

"David Price is the kind of educator that every teacher deserves to encounter in their career. His passion and enthusiasm for genuinely motivating staff to become reflective experts in their field is inspiring. He has the ability to work in a heartfelt, deeply engaging way with educators from all walks of life and at varying stages on their teaching journey." Denice Scala,Principal, MLC School, Sydney

Increasing Engagement Through The Arts These separate, enjoyable, workshops are designed to show how innovative arts-based approaches can improve creativity and cognitive skills, and re–engage previously disengaged learners. Although they use music and visual arts, no specialist skills are required to participate. Their focus is upon innovative teaching and learning strategies – transferability across the curriculum is a core component.

Creativity, Collaboration, Engagement Based upon the lessons learned from the internationally successful ‘Musical Futures’ project, this full or half–day workshop explores pedagogies that enhance student engagement. No previous musical ability is needed to take part – this workshop is about the power of learning socially, rather than the music. However, you will collaboratively make music, have fun, and discover: • The power of independent and peer learning • Teaching strategies that drive student-led learning • Publishing and performance as a motivational ‘hook’ • Workshop techniques to develop student’s creativity • Transferable principles and practices that drive engagement in more detail through creating Artwork

Thinking Digital Lines

This full OR half day-training will equip teachers with new skills and strategies for teaching and using drawing in the classroom The emphasis will not simply be on developing students abilities in drawing, but to also use drawing as a thinking tool across the curriculum.

This half-day of training will introduce the use of iPads as a tool to support the Art & Design Curriculum.

This workshop includes: • Practical activities using drawing strategies • Individual and collaborative approaches to drawing • Drawing to create and drawing to communicate • Using drawing to support project –based learning • Resources to help you beyond the course

This workshop will: • Give hands-on experience of working with iPads, showing how this form of digital learning enhances traditional approaches to delivering the Art & Design curriculum • Provide an overview of some of the most useful Drawing and Art Apps available • Give participants an opportunity to try out a number of Apps in more detail through creating Artwork • Look at how to effectively design drawing and art projects that utilise iPads Note: Participants will need access to iPads
