Consultant for Difference Learning UNESCO MGIEP, India 6 months (extendable) – based on deliverables 20th April - 20th October 2018 18 April 2018

UNESCO MGIEP New Delhi, a specialized Category-I institute that works on for education for peace and sustainable development and global citizenship. The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Director MGIEP in coordination with the Difference Learning programme officer to create the blue print for the Specialised School for Different Learners by September 2018. Background: The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development is an integral part of UNESCO, and the organization’s specialist institute on education for peace and sustainable development to foster global citizenship. It is estimated that the brain is wired differently in approximately 10-12% of the world’s population. Individuals with such brain wiring are gifted in domains like 3-D visualization, art, sports and visualization and possess rare qualities of compassion and humanity but find it extremely difficult to acquires skills of literacy and numeracy in the classroom. Inability to achieve age appropriate skilled reading is called dyslexia while inability to achieve math skills is called dyscalculia. Recent studies indicate that there are approximately one billion people with dyslexia worldwide, wherein children struggle with the basics of reading, writing and spelling. With approximately 35 million children between the age group 6-10 years in India alone, this poses a significant challenge to society and a significant loss to of uniquely gifted resource to the country. These children require education instruction, trained remedial teachers and an environment where their talents will be recognized and nurtured and their disabilities addressed so that they may achieve maximum potential. In keeping with the objective to contribute towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) specifically to contribute to SDG Target 4.7;—4, i.e., ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, UNESCO MGIEP and the Education Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Education Department and the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board have signed an MOU to create the first specialized school in India and the Asia Pacific Region for Children with Learning Differences (these include Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia) . This school will be the first Centre of Excellence for children with Learning Differences in the Asia Pacific region. It will also serve as a Centre for research and innovation in pedagogies, interventions and remediation for improving learning outcomes for children. This state run specialized school would be equipped with specially trained educators and curricula that will create and build essential pedagogies that will cater to the needs of different learners in all respects namely identify and nurture their gifts and address their learning challenges. Responsibilities The work responsibilities of the incumbent are as follows:  

Identify stakeholders relevant to the creation of the specialized school for difference learners Engage each stakeholder to multiple rounds of discussions to arrive at the basic guidelines for the school

Work with UNESCO MGIEP, AP government and identified stakeholders to create a model of the specialized school Prepare a blueprint or that takes into account the financial sustainability, commercial viability, operational requirements, human resource requirements and logistics requirements of the school interface with government officials for policy advocacy to help facilitate bring in investment to the specialized school Support the programme officer in organizing events, webinars and other activities relevant to the creation of the final blueprint Identify prganisations or companies to specifically contribute to the creation of the special school, in terms of Knowledge, existing edtech content, existing platform/technology, creation of new products based on MGIEP’s frameworks that are focused on providing literacy skills to all learners. Eligibility requirement:

Education 

Ph.D in Psychology with a specialization in working with children with children with learning differences.

Experience   

Experience in Edtech industry Experience in implementation of Government projects with multistakeholder engagement is desirable Research based content development is a plus

Additional Requirements:   

Languages: An excellent knowledge, both written and spoken, of at least one of UNESCO’s working languages (English or French). A working knowledge of the other language is an asset. Computer skills: Ability to use computer systems, email and office-related software (MS Office). Attitude: An awareness of the many facets of a multicultural world and a commitment to international public service are essential.
