The CSDS-KAS Youth Survey 2016 was conducted in 19 States of the country among 6,122 respondents in the age group of 15-34 years

Some survey statements “Some people in this world should have more opportunities than others” “In times of insecurity (situations of conflict), it is sometimes necessary to use force against others to maintain law and order” “Fixed gender roles of men and women bring stability to society”

What has this led to …… • Education emphasis on material wellbeing and economic growth • Increasing prevalence of unhappiness, insecurity, poor interpersonal relationships and for the tendency to ignore emotionally satisfying

behaviors such as social engagement and affiliation.

• Clearly the sole focus on economic growth has not lead to human well-being.

Human wellbeing is the recognition that everyone around the world, regardless of geography, age, culture, religion or political environment, aspires to live well.

New Understanding of Human Well being from Neuroscience • Well-being is a skill. • Well being can be explicit taught. • It exhibits plasticity and will strengthen if we exercise the underlying neural circuits

• Resilience - The rapidity with which we recover from adversity; • Outlook • Attention/Mindfulness • Generosity /Altruism/Compassion

The Limbic system The structures of the limbic system are involved in motivation, emotion, learning, and memory. The limbic system is where the subcortical structures meet the cerebral cortex

Well being exhibits The neural basis ofplasticity. Learning It will strengthen if we exercise the underlying neural circuits

Neuroplasticity – is a fundamental principle which forms the basis of learning. Brain structure and connectivity changes during learning

Important facts about neuroplasticity • It is lifelong. • It is variable across individuals – different people learn at different rates. • The brain works as a muscle here – the more practice it gets the better it becomes. • Routine activities do not challenge the brain

Critical Inquiry network If intuition and rationality point to contradictory paths, how do we resolve conflict? • Question and inquire • Analytical reasoning

MINDFULNESS – ATTENTION TRAINING

The ability to voluntarily bring back a wandering attention over and over again is the very root of judgment, character, and will.

Empathy The ability to experience and understand what others feel. People report a stronger preference for spending time with others rather than being alone and do so for a majority of their waking hours (Kahneman, et al 2004).

• Fostering social connection • Cognitive perspective taking • Understanding the other

COMPASSION

Defined as • Feeling of concern for the suffering of others associated with the motivation to help (Keltner and Goetz, 2007). • Compassion can foster emotional well-being (Fredrickson et al., 2008), positive emotions (Klimecki et al., 2012) and prosocial behavior (Leiberg et al., 2011).

• Conscious choice making • Cognitive flexibility • Action for change
