Bearing Fruits from Love We have all experienced friendship. There are also people we relate with on a daily basis, but it does not mean that we are friends. To be friends requires a deeper relationship. Today the gospel tells us about our friendship with Jesus. It uses as a concrete example: the grapevine and its branches. The branches only have life if they are attached to the grapevine. We can also say, as Jesus did, that without branches the grapevine shall not bear fruit. What joins the grapevine and the branches is the substance that continually transfers life from one to the other. Today Jesus is asking us to maintain that same profound relationship with him, just like the grapevine and branches. And just how is it done? To maintain our relationship with Jesus is to dine with him and to share our food with others; to recognize Jesus in everyone who needs us; to give fruits of love to our family and others; to demonstrate sincerity and honesty in our jobs; to fight for justice, truth, and peace. To maintain a profound relationship means to give the required time in our life to feel nourished by his Word again and again, and to be called to do what is pleasing to God, which is to be fair, charitable, helpful, and generous, even if it requires a sacrifice. For Reflection How is my relationship with Jesus? Do I remain alert to his calling to those things that can bear greater fruits of kindness and love?
