ELIGIBILITY & CRITERIA: M.Sc. Biotechnology: Graduate degree in any discipline of science with an aggregate minimum of 60% including Mathematics, Engineering or Medicine. Background in Biology is preferred. M. Sc. Microbiology: Graduate degree in any discipline of science with an aggregate minimum of 60% including Mathematics, Engineering or Medicine. Background in Biology is preferred. M. Sc. Bioinformatics: Graduate degree in any discipline of science with an aggregate minimum of 60% including Mathematics, Engineering or Medicine. Background in Mathematics or Computer Science is preferred. DURATION: All the postgraduate programmes spans for a period of 2 years, divided in to 4 semesters. The last semester is spent in a reputed academic or industrial research laboratory where they are involved in design and execution of a research project as a part of their curriculum. The dissertation/thesis has a weightage of 10 credits in the curriculum of all M.Sc. programmes SELECTION: Selection to the postgraduate programmes are based on the educational record of the candidate at the undergraduate level, an evaluation test and a personal interview conducted at the School of Biotechnology

CALL LETTER: Call letters are sent by Email. If you do not receive the Call Letter 4 days before the date of the interview(as on the admissions website), please contact the admissions office (0476 280 3127/3000) EVALUATION TEST & INTERVIEW: An evaluation test and a personal interview is conducted at the School of Biotechnology. The performance of the candidate in the evaluation test and the interview is also taken into consideration along with the performance in the qualifying undergraduate examination.The candidates are requested to appear for the same along with the required documents as mentioned in the call letter. The evaluation test would be of multiple choice type and comprises of 50 questions. The evaluation test is follwed by a personal interview. Interview would be conducted by a panel of expert scientists from academia and industry SELECTION: Selection list will be published on the admissions website (www.biotech.amrita.edu/admissions) once the interview process for all the candidates are over. Candidates whose name is present in the first selection list have to confirm the admission with in the mentioned date in the announcement, failure of which will enable the candidates in the waiting list to confirm the seat. ADMISSION POLICIES & PROCEDURES: Management of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham reserves the right to change any of the conditions enumerated herein for the purpose of complying with any of the regulations of the University Grants Commission or any other competent authorities. 1. Candidates may please note that evaluation test is common for M.Sc. Biotechnology and M.Sc. Microbiology while a separate evaluation test would be conducted for M.Sc. Bioinformatics. 2. Candidates are called for evaluation test & interview on the basis of the performance in the qualifying undergraduate examination. Important dates and list of documents to be submitted at the time of interview will be published in our website (http://biotech.amrita.edu). Candidates desirous of taking admission shall report to the Admission Office on the date / time and place as mentioned in the website. 3. Details of fee to be paid, date of payment, last date etc will also be mentioned in the web site. 4. While confirming the seat, the candidate shall be accompanied at least by one of the parents and shall produce and surrender the documents in original as mentioned below, failing which the admission will stand cancelled. a) All available mark list/ certificates from the undergraduate degree b) 12th standard or equivalent mark list and pass certificate c) 10th standard mark list and pass certificate d) Conduct Certificate from the institution last attended

e) Transfer Certificate from the institution last attended f ) Medical or Physical Fitness Certificate from the officer not below the rank of a Civil Surgeon or a Clinical Associate Professor of a Medical College. g) Community Certificate in case of SC / ST students h) Demand draft for the amount mentioned in the website 5. All admissions are subject to verification of the original certificates and documents produced by the candidates. 6. The decision of the Dean regarding the eligibility of any applicant shall be final. 7. Admitted candidates are required to pay the tuition and other fee at the time of admission by way of demand draft. 8. From second semester onwards, fee is to be paid on semester basis. Dates will be notified on the university notice boards. Those who stay in university hostels shall pay their hostel and mess fee on yearly basis. GROUNDS ON WHICH AN ADMISSION MAY GET REJECTED: In any case, if a candidate has failed to score the minimum marks required for admission to any programme, as per the eligibility criteria, the admission will get rejected.

CANCELLATION OF ADMISSION AND REFUND OF FEES a) For candidates who have joined the programme but opt to discontinue before commencement of classes, an amount of Rs.1,000/- is deducted towards administrative expenses from the fee which they have paid at the time of joining. b) For candidates opting to discontinue the study within a period of one week of commencement of classes, 80% of tuition fee is refunded, while 20% is retained as administrative charges. c) After one week and before one month of commencement of classes, 50% of the tuition fee alone will be refunded. d) After one-month period, no tuition fee will be refunded. e) In all these cases, unutilized portion of the other fees is refunded after proportionate deduction. f ) As per the existing regulations of the University, admissions will have to be closed within one month of the commencement of classes. If any student intends to discontinue the studies on or about this date, it will be necessary for such student to give a notice in writing to the Dean, School of Biotechnology, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus, latest – within two weeks of commencement of classes. The notice should have been received by the Dean or by his representative authorised to receive such notice. In such cases, rules of recoveries shall be as mentioned above. g) Candidates will be deemed to have withdrawn if he/she remains absent for more than 30 (thirty) days

from the date of commencement of the classes. DISCIPLINE – DRESS CODE, UNIFORM, ETC a) Students staying more than 30 kms away from the campus are required to stay in the university hostel. b) Food served in the hostels are 100% vegetarian. c) Students are not allowed to keep their own vehicles on the hostel premises. d) Smoking and drinking of alcohol is strictly prohibited. e) Dress code is mandatory for all the students, as prescribed by the university. f ) Students shall strictly abide the rules and regulations, given to them at the time of joining and in the beginning of each academic year. g) Failure to observe discipline will automatically attract appropriate disciplinary action. ANTI RAGGING RULES & REGULATIONS The Supreme Court of India, UGC, Governments of Kerala and other states have recommended very stringent measures to prevent Ragging in Educational Institutions. According to these recommendations, any student found to be guilty of involvement in any act of Ragging will be summarily dismissed from the Institution with a remark in his Transfer Certificate to that effect. Wherever necessary, the matter may also be referred to the Police. Ragging includes tormenting others by words or deed, playing rough jokes on other, engaging in rough play, physical assault or threat, use of physical force, verbal abuse and

aggression, exhibiting indecent gestures and obscene behavior, exposing fellow students and others to ridicule and contempt, violating the status, dignity, and honor of fellow students and others, violating the privacy and rights of others, and hassling or exhibiting riotous behavior. In the light of the above, as per recommendations of the Supreme Court, an annual joint declaration by the parent and the student is mandatory for the student to be enrolled for the classes. SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTES In case of any dispute in the interpretation of any of the conditions included in this booklet relating to admission to M.Sc. Biotechnology / Microbiology / Bioinformatics programmes, decision of the Dean will be final and binding. JURISDICTION Courts situated in Kollam, Kerala only have the jurisdiction over disputes if any arising on the matter of applications and/or admission to the course covered under this handbook.

ELIGIBILITY & CRITERIA: B.Sc. Biotechnology: A pass in 12th standard or its equivalent, with an aggregate minimum of 60% in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. B. Sc. Microbiology: A pass in 12th standard or its equivalent, with an aggregate minimum of 60% in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. DURATION: All the undergraduate programmes spans for a period of 3 years, divided in to 6 semesters. Emphasis on research and problem solving skills among the students is very much integrated in our school. From the BSc final year itself, students get trained formally in Research methodology and a research project under the guidance of the faculty members. Very often they get the scope to present their research projects in national and international conferences and encouraged to get publications out of their work where they are involved in design and execution of a research project as a part of their curriculum. (Microbiology) programmes is on the basis of aggregate percentage of marks scored in Physics, Chemistry & Biology. Counseling notification specifying the date, time, venue of the counseling, and original certificates to be presented at the time of counseling is published on the website (biotech.amrita.edu) after the last date of submission of filled in application forms. Candidates are requested to note down their application form number and should be able to produce the same during the counseling. Provisional Admission Order is issued after the verification of the academic records. Candidate shall surrender all his/her original documents of the qualifying examination in case the admission is accepted. If the required documents are not submitted by the candidate on time, or if the eligibility criteria is not satisfied, the decision of the University regarding his/her eligibility for admission to the program shall be final and binding. STEP 4: You will be directed to a page where you have to create a profile by filling in all the fields. Please provide all the necessary details. Fields marked with * are mandatory but it is recommended to fill in all the fields for better processing of your applications later. Please upload your recent photograph [150px X 200px]. If you don’t know how create the picture of this dimension, you could upload any size of portrait size photograph and crop it using the online cropping tool before you save.

STEP 5: Click on the notifications tab where you could find links to apply for all the programmes offered at the Amritapuri Campus. Select your programme from list as shown in the image below and click “Apply Online”

STEP 6: Fill in all the details and review it before submitting. If you are awaiting the results of the final examination/ in theprocess of writing the qualifying examination, you could fill in these details later and proceed with applying once you results [+2 / Degree] are published.

STEP 8: If you are choosing to pay offline, then you have to draw a demand draft of `300 in favour of “Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham” payable at Kollam and enter those details in the box as shown in the image above. In that case you have to send us the hard copy of the system generated application form along with the demand draft. If you are paying by online, there is no need to send printed application.
