INTRODUCTION Italy’s participation as Guest of Honor at the 16th Abu Dhabi International Book Fairpromoted by the Italian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the International Cooperation, Economic Development and Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism; the Embassy of Italy to the United Arab Emirates, the Italian Trade Agency, the Center for the Book and Reading and the AIE - Italian Publishers Association, which was in charge of the whole project and organization - takes visitors and readers of the United Arab Emirates on a journey into Italian Genius and the different areas in which Italian imagination and creativity have excelled over the centuries, leaving an indelible, admired, shared and often imitated mark throughout the world. In this immersion into the renaissance - and encyclopedic - vision of Italy’s legacy, the books and authors at the heart of the cultural program make up the compass that guides visitors in their exploration of Italian excellence. Playing off and intersecting with one another, they represent the eclectic nature of Italian literature, children’s fiction, poetry, illustrations and contemporary non-fiction. Each of the protagonists of Italian Genius, in their own style, bring to life a mosaic of stories, faces and atmospheres through individual reflections, dialogues and images. The game of mirrors between Italy’s traditions and its future horizons that make up this cultural program spans genre fiction, history, contaminations with the visual arts, a neorealistic gaze on society, focuses on children’s literature and examinations of the evolution of poetry in the 21st century. One of the goals of Italy’s participation is to reinforce economic and political relations between two countries that years ago began a fruitful exchange and collaboration. To this end, the professional program offers diverse examinations of the fundamental characteristics of Italian and Emirate publishing, the complexity and prospects of the ties between the Arab and Western worlds, and how the literary industry has evolved through globalization, multimediality and new technologies. The Italian Genius pavilion opens a door to the peninsula’s cultural scene: a road of discovery accompanied by the illustrations of Alessandro Sanna and the screenings of videos and other visual documents; a collective chorus that joins the voices of the protagonists, to explore the excellence of Made in Italy.

5

Throughout the pavilion, visitors can acquire contemporary books in Italian (from 24 publishing companies), English and Arabic. And admire Illustrations for Children Eccellenze Italiane, an exhibit (promoted and organized by BolognaFiere, Bologna Children’s Book Fair and the Italian Cultural Institute of Madrid, with support from the Emilia Romagna Region) of 18 works by world-renowned artists that include Beatrice Alemagna, Roberto Innocenti, Lorenzo Mattotti and Guido Scarabottolo. The Italian Genius pavilion is flanked by the Italian Business Area, reserved for B2B meetings between 16 participating Italian publishing companies and foreign industry professionals, along with an area that invites visitors to travel back in time to discover the ancient, prestigious volumes from the collection of the Angelica Library in Rome, in an exhibit of first printed editions, highly rare volumes from the mid-14th to the late 18th centuries, spanning astronomy, comparative theology and history. Last, but certainly not least, the Italian Genius in Food celebrates another form of artistry for which Italy is lauded the world over: its exceptional cuisine. The Show Kitchen will feature celebrated chefs who with their creations will pay homage to the gastronomic splendors of the Bel Paese.

One unique aspect of Italian genius is its extraordinary breadth across history: this civilization spanning 30 centuries of extraordinary events and immortal works is the foundation of Western culture. Valerio Massimo Manfredi uses his inimitable alchemy of facts and legends to explain how.

Europe’s Muslim roots Organized by the Caffè Letterario di Crema With Franco Cardini

11.30 AM Show Kitchen

Italian Genius in Food Region: Sicily Chef Andrea Mugavero (Roberto’s, Dubai) inspired by Andrea Camilleri

While Europe’s Christian roots are well known, Islam’s role in shaping the continent’s identity is usually undervalued. One of Italy’s leading experts on Medieval history, the scholar of relations between Islam and the West Franco Cardini looks at a history that dates back over a millennium, whose traces still exist today, not only in regions of direct Muslim influence (Sicily, Spain, the Balkans) but also in the way in which literature, philosophy, science and education developed across the entire continent.

Internationally renowned chefs are cooking live to shine a spotlight on the Italian gastronomic excellence - truly unique in the world for its variety and diversity - and focus on some regional specialities. On the trail of Sicilian recipes by Andrea Camilleri, chef Andrea Mugavero (Roberto’s, Dubai) brings the flavours of Sicily to the Fair. 4.30 PM Show Kitchen

From page to screen: The importance of character With Antonio Manzini Presented by Liborio Stellino

In reference to data on Italians’ reading habits, January 2016 saw headlines such as: “Adolescents read the most in Italy” and “Italy’s most avid readers are 15 to 17.” Hence this conversation on young adults, between Italy’s best-selling fantasy writer internationally, Licia Troisi; editor and translator of Harry Potter novels, Beatrice Masini.

One of Italy’s most characteristic and literally most isolated regions, Sardinia is a cultural crossroads and a land proudly alien to the rest of the country - for its culture, traditions, and even distance (unlike Sicily, no bridge could ever connect it to the mainland). A versatile figure of her region’s recently revitalized literary landscape, Michela Murgia shares the uniqueness of her island, itself a symbol of the internal diversity in the inimitable recipe for Italian genius.

Antonio Manzini is not simply a writer: before inventing deputy police chief Rocco Schiavone, the celebrated protagonist of four novels published from 2013 to 2015, he played Inspector Tucci

13

in the TV series Linda e il brigadiere and wrote the screenplays to Alex Infascelli’s The Vanity Serum and Gabriele Salvatores’ As God Commands. Which makes him the perfect guide for this journey into “on-paper” and onscreen characters: how to create them, give them psychological depth, and breathe life into them. 8.30 PM Ibn Rushed Forum, Hall 12

Verses in the mirror: Young contemporary poetry in Italy Organized by Caffè Letterario di Crema With Giorgio Ghiotti

Barely over 20, Giorgio Ghiotti has already published an anthology of short stories and one of poetry, and a book of interviews with contemporary Italian female authors and poets (Mesdemoiselles. Le nuove signore della scrittura, Perrone, 2016, lit. “Mesdemoiselles: The New Women Writers”). A young, fresh voice attesting to the generational change currently underway even in a classic literary form such as poetry.

The Adventures of Pinocchio: Live painting of a marionette With Alessandro Sanna

6 PM Ibn Rushed Forum, Hall 12

The infinite paths of translation Organized by the Caffè Letterario di Crema With Chiara Valerio and Ali Al Shaali

Pinocchio turned 135 this year. One of the most famous and beloved characters of world literature, borne of the imagination of Carlo Collodi, Pinocchio first appeared in 1881, in the Giornale dei ragazzi. Illustrator and author of Pinocchio prima di Pinocchio (Orecchio Acerbo, 2015, lit. “Pinocchio Before Pinocchio”), Alessandro Sanna brings the renowned wooden marionette back to life in a surprising live painting performance. The artistic alchemy of tradition and modernity is accompanied by music and designs created on an iPad and projected onto the big screen.

Sometimes, things get lost in the translation from one language to another, as film director Sofia Coppola reminded us in Lost in Translation. Other times, something is gained. Between navigating invention, being faithful to an original text, joining two different cultures and adapting to technological innovations (from the Internet to ebooks), literary translations are a continuous forging of new paths. Tasked with telling their turning points and prospects are Chiara Valerio, author, editor and translator of Virginia Woolf, and Ali Al Shaali, member of the Emirates Writers Union, Senior Director of the Publishing and Translation Department at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation and author of three collections of poetry.

Saints, navigators and... poets? Italian poetry of and in the third millennium With Valerio Magrelli

8 PM Discussion sofa, Hall 11

Based on true stories: When history inspires fiction With Luigi Guarnieri

Valerio Magrelli’s recent anthology, Millennium Poetry, includes the work of seminal poets such as Dante, Petrarca, Carducci, Pascoli and Leopardi. If the “second” millennium was extraordinary, what can be said about the third, which has just begun? Is Italy still a nation of poets, even in the era of Facebook and whatsapp? This lectio examines the wonders of the past alongside the challenges of the present.

Be it Lombroso, Vermeer or Brahms, there’s always a historical figure (or fact) at the heart of Luigi Guarnieri’s books. Yet in just a few pages, reality inevitably entwines with fiction in a seductive game of mirrors. The boundaries between what actually happened and what we are told are blurred. And while history takes on the familiar face of a character, the stories lead us to rediscover something about our past.

On the threshold of a new renaissance: The classics as a path towards the future of art Conversation with Melania Mazzucco and Vincenzo Trione

A land teeming with creativity, passion, culture and popular tradition, Romagna is captured in the books of Cristiano Cavina with an epic freshness and intensity that conquers readers of all ages. And when he talks about classic writers - such as Emilio Salgari, perhaps the most translated Italian author in the Arab world - Cavina unites the power of great oral tradition with the epos of adventures ready available to all.

Internationally renowned chefs are cooking live to shine a spotlight on the Italian gastronomic excellence - truly unique in the world for its variety and diversity - and focus on some regional specialities. Today the stage is all set for Pizza, an everlasting classic of Italian cuisine, interpreted by chef Fortunato Ostacolo (Lounge Cafè Italiano, Dubai).

Symbolically speaking, this event could just as well take place in Venice, home to Tintoretto, the great painter about whom Melania Mazzucco writes, and where Vincenzo Trione curated the Italian Pavilion of the 2015 Biennale. A symbol of Italy’s capacity to transform even everyday places into art, Venice is the ideal springboard for a reflection on the evolution of Italian genius. We all agree on the glories of the past, but is it possible today - perhaps using those glories as inspiration - to begin a new renaissance?

Cesare Lombroso was a highly controversial Italian doctor, anthropologist and criminologist; Han Van Meegeren, an infamous art forger; eminent 19th century artists-composers Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck were involved in a “strange love story”; Adolf Hitler, alas, needs no introductions. What do these historic figures have in common? As protagonists of the books of Luigi Guarnieri - respectively in L’atlante criminale. Vita scriteriata di Cesare Lombroso (lit. “Criminal Atlas: The Reckless Life of Cesare Lombroso”), Mondadori, 2000; La doppia vita di Vermeer (lit. “The Double Life of Vermeer”), Mondadori, 2004; Una strana storia d’amore (lit. “A Strange Love Story”), Rizzoli, 2010; and Il sosia di Hitler (lit. “Hitler’s Double”), Mondadori, 2014 - they are all pieces of a narrative mosaic in which the biographies and lives of real people entwine with the artifices of dramatic reinvention. Born in Catanzaro in 1962, Guarnieri has also written radio and theatre plays. His work has been translated in diverse languages and garnered numerous prizes.

On July 2, 2015, Nicola Lagioia beat out fierce competition (including Elena Ferrante’s latest best seller) to win the Strega Prize, Italy’s top literary honors, for his novel La ferocia (Einaudi, lit. “Ferocity”). Born in Bari in 1973, Lagioia is an eclectic and passionate figure of the Italian cultural scene, as a writer, literary editor (of Nichel, the Italian literature strand of the minimum fax publishing company), film critic (he is on the selection committee of the Venice Film Festival), radio presenter (as co-host of the cultural press review on RAI Radio 3), music aficionado (from his youthful passion for drumming to his love of rock’n’roll) and animator of lively discussions across print and social network media. He embodies, to all effects, the spirit of the humanist Renaissance man that is making a comeback in the 21st-century.

Born in Germany as his parents used to have Ice Cream shops there, Maurizio Lazzarin’s passion was influenced by Central European and northern Italian cooking. Chef Maurizio works on old recipes, keeping their flavors with a more healthconscious use of ingredients. He is very keen on using original Italian products distributed by certified suppliers and, if available in Dubai, products which are DOC or Dogc. www.casamia-dubai.com

Alfieri Lorenzon has been director of the Italian Publishers Association (AIE) since January 2008. He has devoted his entire career to publishing, starting at Padova University Press (CLEUP) in 1980 and later Touring Club Italiano, a leading Italian publishing company in the tourist guide and cartography sector, where he was first CEO and later managing director as of June 2003, before joining the AIE in July 2007 as co-director. His lifelong relationship with books has led to collaborations with Italy’s foremost publishers, including The Walt Disney Company Italia, McGraw-Hill Italia and Bruno Mondadori Editore. www.aie.it

The debut of Valerio Magrelli (Rome, 1957) on the Italian cultural scene - the collection of poems Ora serrata retinae (Feltrinelli, 1980) - established him as one of the most innovative and versatile voices of contemporary Italian literature. Magrelli is also an academic, critic, teacher, translator, culture writer for Italian newspapers and sporadic visitor of film sets [e.g. Lo sciamano di famiglia (Laterza, 2015, lit. “The Family Shaman”), which celebrates his friendship with Federico Fellini]. A prolific author and experimenter of new literary languages, Magrelli sustains his curious gaze on humanity’s past, present and future through sharp reflections on contemporary society (Il sessantotto realizzato da Mediaset, Einaudi, 2011, lit. “1968 Brought to You by Mediaset”) and an erudite passion for art history, culture and poetry, such as in the anthology Millennium Poetry (Il Mulino, 2015), among other writings. His latest book of poetry is Il sangue amaro (Einaudi, 2014, lit. “Bitter Blood”).

Spanning more than four decades, the career of the professorwriter Valerio Massimo Manfredi has been dedicated to the beauty of art and history. From his celebrated Alexander Trilogy (published from 2001 to 2002) and recent adventures of Odysseus (Il mio nome è Nessuno, three volumes published by Mondadori from 2012 to 2014) to many individual novels (including L’ultima legione, Mondadori, 2002, adapted into the feature film The Last Legion starring Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley) and books on his archeological expeditions, Manfredi introduces readers to new perspectives on our past, or reveals curiosities and secrets of stories already known (as in Le meraviglie del mondo antico, Mondadori, 2014, on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). An internationally renowned and acclaimed author whose books have been translated in 60 territories, sold 12 million copies around the globe, and won numerous awards, Manfredi also contributes to print and television outlets. www.valeriomassimomanfredi.it One could say that Antonio Manzini has led two artistic lives. In the first, the author published two novels (Sangue marcio, Fazi, 2005, lit. “Bad Blood”; La giostra dei criceti, Einaudi, 2007, lit. “Hamster Wheel”) and wrote extensively for film, television and theatre. In his second life, he invented Rocco Schiavone, the irascible Roman deputy police chief transferred to Aosta who made his debut in Black Run (2015) - and has never looked back. Over the next two years, Schiavone appeared in three more novels [Adam’s Rib, 2016; Non è stagione (2015, lit. “Not the Right Season”)] and Era di Maggio (2015, lit. “It Happened in May”) and several stories (gathered in the collection Cinque indagini romane per Rocco Schiavone, 2016, lit. “Five Roman Investigations for Rocco Schiavone”), all published domestically by Sellerio, and quickly became an international hit. A TV series based on Schiavone went into production in 2016. Manzini’s latest book, Sull’orlo del precipizio (Sellerio, 2015, lit. “On the Edge of the Abyss”), is a dystopian instant novel inspired by recent upheavals in the Italian publishing industry. A new novel starring Rocco Schiavone will be published in July.

A journalist, writer, editor (for publishers Fabbri, Rizzoli and Bompiani) and translator (of volumes 3-7 of the Harry Potter series), Beatrice Masini is one of the most esteemed and well-rounded figures of the Italian publishing industry. As a writer, she specializes in books for children and young adults, many of which have been translated internationally. Her most recent titles include Belle, astute e coraggiose (EL, lit. “Beautiful, Clever and Brave”), La cena del cuore. Tredici parole per Emily Dickinson (Rueballu, lit. “Dinner of the Heart: 13 Words for Emily Dickinson”), Maisie e il gemello di Mozart (Fabbri, lit. “Maisie and Mozart’s Double”) and Il viaggio della regina (Carthusia, lit. “The Queen’s Journey”), all published in 2015. Masini’s numerous prizes for children’s literature includes three Premio Andersen awards, and in 2013 she published her first adult fiction novel, Tentativi di botanica degli affetti (Bompiani, winner of the Campiello and Manzoni prizes, lit. “Attempts at Emotional Botany”), which she followed up in 2016 with I nomi che diamo alle cose (Bompiani, lit. “The Names We Give Things”). This year, Melania Mazzucco celebrates two decades of a literary career that began with Il bacio della Medusa (Baldini&Castoldi, 1996, lit. “Medusa’s Kiss”), establishing her one of the most esteemed voices of contemporary Italian literature. A Strega Prize finalist for both her debut novel and La camera di Baltus (Baldini&Castoldi, 1998, lit. “Balthus’ Room”), Mazzucco won the prestigious award for Vita: A Novel (2005), which also launched her international career. Subsequent novels include Un giorno perfetto (Rizzoli, 2005, adapted for the cinema by Ferzan Özpetek eponymously, as A Perfect Day), Limbo (Einaudi, 2012) and Sei come sei (Einaudi, 2013, lit. “You Are What You Are”). In 2008 she published the historic novel La lunga attesa dell’angelo (Rizzoli, lit. “The Angel’s Long Wait”) on Venetian painter Tintoretto, and his biography the following year (Jacomo Tintoretto e i suoi figli. Storia di una famiglia veneziana, Rizzoli, 2009, lit. “Jacomo Tintoretto and His Children: The Story of a Venetian Family”). Art was also at the heart of Il museo del mondo (Einaudi, 2014, lit. “Museum of the World”). Her books have been translated in more than 20 territories.

Deeply attached to her native lands, Michela Murgia (Cabras, Oristano) made her debut in 2006 with Il mondo deve sapere (ISBN), upon which director Paolo Virzì based his film Her Whole Life Ahead. Since then, Murgia’s eclectic literary path has included novels, blogs, travel guides (Viaggio in Sardegna, undici percorsi nell’isola che non si vede, Einaudi, 2008, lit. “Traveling to Sardinia: 11 Trips on the Unseen Island”), novellas (L’incontro, Einaudi, 2012, lit. “Encounter”), theological non-fiction (Ave Mary. E la chiesa inventò la donna, Einaudi, 2011, lit. “Ave Mary: And the Church Invented Women”) and even plays. In 2009 she published the novel Accabadora (Einaudi), winner of the Campiello, Dessì and SuperMondello awards. Her latest novel, Chirù (Einaudi, 2015), confirmed the Sardinian writer’s relevance on the national literary landscape, as well as her role as an avant-garde experimenter of new literary languages. www.michelamurgia.com

Lucia Panini (Modena, 1969) is on the board of directors of Franco Cosimo Panini Editore. She inherited her passion for antique books from her father Franco Cosimo, the company’s founder, and entered the world of collectors and bibliophiles at a very young age. In 1991 she opened the Lucia Panini Antiquarian Bookshop, and attended the most important international fairs. From 1995 to 2000 she lived in London where, in glamorous Old Bond Street, she sold antique books while promoting extraordinary works of Italian publishing. At the publishing company she oversees facsimiles with great care. Thanks to her previous experience in this field, she heads the committee to find illuminating manuscripts to reproduce, thereby continuing her father’s dream of creating the Biblioteca Impossibile, a remarkable collection of publications dedicated to the most significant codices of the great noble houses of the Renaissance. www.francopanini.it

Un viaggio lungo il Po, Rizzoli), Alessandro Sanna today divides his time among creating illustrated books, writing for newspapers and magazines and teaching (at the Fine Arts Academy of Bologna). His print illustrations quickly developed into a personal, highly evocative style in which images alone support a story’s structure, with no need for words. His “silent books” include Fiume lento, which was published in English as The River and garnered great reviews in the US from The New Yorker and Brain Pickings. www.alessandrosanna.com

“This is an anti-scrapping exhibit, if scrapping implies erasing that which our forefathers created. I believe the Biennale has an obligation to preserve Italy and present it to the eyes of the world”, said Vincenzo Trione at the unveiling of Codice Italia, the national pavilion he curated at the 56th Venice Art Biennale, to the media. For the Neapolitan professor and critic, the 2015 Biennale was the culmination of a career still on the rise, and the manifesto of a vision in which grandeurs of the past and present-day vitality are inimitable ingredients of the same cultural recipe. Trione is a professor of art and new media and president of the Faculty of Art, Tourism and Markets at the University Institute for Modern Languages (IULM) in Milan. He contributes to Corriere della Sera. His latest book is Effetto città. Arte cinema modernità (Bompiani, 2014, lit. “City Effect: Art, Cinema, Modernity”). Licia Troisi is the best-selling Italian fantasy author in the world today. Her novels have been translated in 18 languages and she has already published three complete sagas: Mondo Emerso (three trilogies of nine novels, 2004-2010, lit. “Overworld”), the five installments of Ragazza Drago (2008-2012, lit. “Dragon Girl”), and the tetralogy I regni di Nashira (2011-2015, lit. “The Realms of Nashira”). In 2014 she inaugurated a new cycle, Pandora, with the eponymous novel, followed by the second installment in 2016, Il risveglio di Samael (published, like all of Troisi’s books, by Mondadori, lit. “Samael’s Awakening”). In 2015 the author made her non-fiction debut with Dove va a finire il cielo (lit. “Where the Sky Will End”), a science book for young readers on Troisi’s - who studied physics and astrophysics - other great passion: the universe. www.liciatroisi.it

An avid reader from childhood, a hunter of lost books in second-hand bookstalls, Marco Zapparoli decided to devote himself to literature after discovering and devouring Memoirs of a Good-for-Nothing (Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts) by Joseph von Eichendorff. He started frequenting the publishing industry by translating Novalis, Kleist and Dürrenmatt. In 1981, at the age of 21, he founded Marcos y Marcos with Marco Franza. After a period of revival of the great writers of the past - including Toole, Vian, Fante and Lem - today Marcos y Marcos is one of Italy’s most dynamic publishing companies. With Claudia Tarolo he now steers both Marcos y Marcos and Letteratura rinnovabile, a cultural association that promotes book and reading culture in inventive and original ways, including large collective events and workshops such as Letti di Notte and Booksound. www.marcosymarcos.com
