First of all, let’s warm up your imagination. Can you imagine yourself as a poet?
What would you wear? Where would you write? Do you have a special notebook and pen?
Use this space to draw yourself as a poet.
Rhyme Does poetry have to rhyme? Certainly not! But rhyming is fun – read on to make it easy… Start by thinking of a word that you want to rhyme, for example ‘night’. Now think of all the words that sound like ‘night’:
WHITE
KITE LIGHT
BITE FRIGHT
SIGHT
Now make sentences that end with those words...

Simple Sonnets If you love rhyme, sonnets are the poetic form for you! A sonnet is 14 lines of rhyming
poetry. Each sonnet is made up of four verses, and each verse has lines that rhyme. Below are some rhyming words to get you going: can you fill in the blanks?
There is a monster that lurks in the sea
he has a problem you never could guess, a problem that is hard to conceive
he has grown far too big for his dress.
The first verse has four lines:
1 stare 2 bright 3 care 4 light
Notice how the 1st line rhymes with the 3rd line, and the 2nd line rhymes with the 4th line.
His skirts are much smaller than before his leggings, are much tighter still
he wriggles and writhes on the seabed shore he’s tugging and pulling with all of his skill.
He misses the tassels of his flowery robe and the pink of his ripped-denim Levi’s
he needs a brand new monster wardrobe but none of the shops do monster size.
The second verse also has four lines:
5 head 6 me 7 bed 8 tree
The third verse has four lines as well:
9 bang 10 hop 11 fang 12 pop
The fourth verse has only two lines, which Many at sea have had a great big scare
of a humongous monster with nothing to wear.
