Communicative aim: Students will be able to write about their opinion on the future of the Internet vs books. Linguistic/Grammar aim: Students will be able to write paragraphs on a topic and avoiding repetition of adjectives. Reference: IELTS Objective: Writing folder 8: Task 2: Being relevant and avoiding repetition Stages

Activities and notes

Warm- up

Students to discuss the essay topic with some taking the argument for and some taking the argument against and brainstorming and comparing ideas for each.

Review 5 mins

Teacher reads a bad paragraph from the given text and elicits the problem of repetitive use of vocabulary.

Vocabulary cards

Students are given some vocabulary items to look up (English-English dictionary use only) and prepare definitions for so as to teach the other students. The vocab is written on the board with concept checking done as necessary. Writing 10 mins

Pre-Writing – evaluate text on page 108 for vocabulary use and irrelevant content. Find examples of both and instances where the vocab covered in the review could be used. Evaluate the text based on the paragraph format on page 109, number 2. Teacher Reads first paragraph, getting students to confirm or otherwise if paragraph format is being followed. CCQs – check students can isolate examples. Students complete paragraph 2, 3 and conclusion in pairs/small groups. Facilitate – make sure students are able to isolate examples. Take-up – recap the some isolate examples.

Following the structure given in the course book, the questions are discussed and notes made for each paragraph. The notes are placed on the board for students to copy. Remind students of the vocabulary to be incorporated. Students draft their own paragraphs using the notes and vocabulary list. Facilitate – add corrections/adaptations, remind students to

use vocabulary. Homework 5 - 10 min

All students to complete their written work, if they have not already. Those students, who have completed can research the Internet for evidence to justify their opinions.
