Urban Design and Planning is proposing a themed issue for 2018 on visions for future cities. The future of urban environments that we inhabit today and the active envisioning of futures for the built environment that will surround us tomorrow is a constant topic for urban design and planning. The urban landscape is constantly changing and always in the making. However, in times of profound change and ever faster acceleration, transformations induced by challenging global trends, problematic developments on the local and global level, and intriguing challenges to and questioning of urban design and planning practices, how is the future of our cities envisioned today, and what might this mean for our cities and their hinterlands? Urban Design and Planning is therefore looking for thoughtprovoking contributions to debates surrounding the future of our cities. Topics to be covered/questions asked could include the following.

What is (re-)defining the field of the urban, and hence triggering fears and/or expectations towards future cities?

n

What alternative scenarios or ideas are there, and/or should be investigated?

VISIBILITY

n

What are theoretical underpinnings to be explored related to future cities?

n

How does urban envisioning work; for example, in relation to different actors involved in the making of future urbanities (urban professionals, planning bodies, governments, private sector, civil society, individuals and groups, among others)?

Our journals are included in major science and engineering databases and indexes, making our articles easily discoverable in Google and scholarly search engines.

In addition to ICE members, our content is read by academics and practitioners at over 1500 subscribing universities, corporations and government agencies around the world.

n

Who is putting forward which agenda and why?

ADVOCACY

n

Are there new forms of projecting and crafting urban futures? Are they needed?

n

On the way to future cities, what are practical implications of these visions for today’s urbanities?

This theme covers theory, policy and practice related to future cities and its relevance in public participation in architecture, urban design and urban planning. Practitioners and researchers engaged in any of these questions/topics are invited to submit abstracts by 4th September 2017. Relevant papers outside the themes outlined above will also be considered. The deadline for manuscripts is 4th December 2017.

We work closely with our authors and editors to promote our journals to all relevant audiences, at international conferences and through engineering social networks.
