Alex Newman and Zakee Shariff

A fun mini edition of the first book to embrace the whole of the UK and its creative influence on international fashion, this will appeal to industry professionals, students, and anyone with an interest in fashion. New Icons of Fashion Illustration Tony Glenville

Fashion illustration is and always has been about far more than pretty drawings of pretty dresses. This lavish celebration of today’s leading artists in the field showcases the timeless craft and amazing diversity that characterize the genre. From David Downton to Cecilia Carlstedt and from Jason Brooks to Jordi Labanda, 28 masters of fashion illustration from across the world are featured, one by one, in a grand tour of the best work currently produced. While some illustrators create daringly bold graphics, others prefer delicate watercolours and ink drawings. Throughout the volume, both hi-tech multimedia effects and traditional drawing skills are given pride of place, with many of the artists using a mixture of techniques. Lively commentary accompanies the images, while interviews with each illustrator provide further insight into their influences and methods. Tony Glenville is Creative Director: School of Media & Communication at London College of Fashion. His work has appeared in The Independent, Harper’s Bazaar, Luxure, and The Evening Standard, among others. Tony has an extensive collection of fashion illustration reference materials collected over many years. • The first book to profile the key contributors to the current revival of the genre • Features an eclectic mix of international styles including David Downton, Kareem Iliya, Julie Verhoeven, Jean-Philippe Delhomme, Jason Brooks, Tanya Ling, and Autumn Whitehurst • A must for anyone who bought Masters of Fashion Illustration or 100 Years of Fashion Illustration

The Purple Book Sensuality and Symbolism in Contemporary Art and Illustration Angus Hyland and Angharad Lewis

The Purple Book is a luxurious compendium of contemporary illustration that explores fantasy, sensuality, and the erotic imagination. It highlights visual art and the written word as media for representing human desire’s relationship with the dream-state, make-believe, and symbolism. The title of the book is inspired by The Yellow Book, the periodical published in the 1890s and initially art directed by Aubrey Beardsley. While the color yellow represented the daringly salacious in the 1890s, today the color purple is synonymous with opulence and sensuality. Angus Hyland is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and a partner at Pentagram Design London. His work for Laurence King includes (with Roanne Bell) Hand to Eye (2003), The Picture Book (2010) and, with Steven Bateman, Symbol (2011). Angharad Lewis is an independent writer and editor and former editor of Grafik magazine. She has contributed articles to Eye, Icon, Crafts and Etapes magazines and contributed to, authored and edited books including Public Address System (2006), Street Talk (2006) and for Laurence King Materials Process Print (2007). In 2012 she launched online magazine and design retailer Up Side Up. • Presents illustrators’ intimate, unpublished work, much of it seen for the first time • Includes specially commissioned works illustrating five classic literary texts • Lavish package with quarter binding

Walk the Line The Art of Drawing Marc Valli and Ana Ibarra

Drawing has always been a fundamental skill and good drawing skills allowed artists to grasp the reality around them. At the turn of the millennium, however, the general impression was that with the wide availability of computers, scanners, digital cameras and image software, drawing would dwindle into a marginal activity. In fact, the opposite happened: the enthusiasm for digital imagery died down and the ability to draw has become a treasured skill. Walk the Line: The Art of Drawing includes interviews with the artists about their relationships with technology and the conditions under which their works are shown and sold. Marc Valli is the co-founder of retail and book-selling company Magma in the UK, and of visual art magazines Graphic and Elephant. He is the author of RGB (Reviewing Graphics in Britain) and co-author of Microworlds (Laurence King). Ana Ibarra graduated in Philosophy in Spain, where she was born. She came to London to study Product Design. She is currently one of the editors of Elephant magazine. • Captures a new movement of drawing as an end in itself • Carefully curated collection of 65 emerging talents from around the world • Packed with more than 300 visually arresting drawings

The Renaissance in Europe

The Design Book 1000 Designs and Where to Find Them

Margaret L. King

In this deft recasting of the Renaissance story, Margaret L. King weaves together the many strands that made up this complex cultural movement. By marrying the best of earlier scholarship with more recent research, King shows how Renaissance history is today as much about the study of power, wealth, gender, class, honour, shame, ritual, and other categories of investigation as the literary and artistic achievements of a uniquely urban society that spread from Italy to the rest of Europe. Ultimately, she points to the multiple ways in which this seminal epoch influenced the later developments of Western culture and society.

Jennifer Hudson

The Design Book brings together the best in contemporary design for the home, presenting a huge range of striking new products: tables and chairs, sofas and beds, storage, kitchens and bathrooms, tableware, textiles and surfaces, lighting, electronics, and more. In-depth interviews with twelve key designers explore pivotal projects and approaches to design Web addresses of designers and manufacturers are given for every object, along with full captions and color illustrations, making every design easy to source. Jennifer Hudson is an author, editor, and researcher in the fields of contemporary design and architecture, and was the general editor of The International Design Yearbook for fifteen years. She is the author of 1000 Designs and Where to Find Them Volumes 1 & 2, Interior Architecture Now, Process: 50 Product Designs from Concept to Manufacture, and Interior Architecture: From Brief to Build.

Margaret L. King, is Professor Emerita of history at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. It’s a Stick-Up 20 Real Wheat Paste-ups from the World’s Greatest Street Artists Ollystudio Limited

This is the first book to look at an increasingly popular form of street art: the “wheatie” or wheat paste-up. Many street artists don’t graffiti or stencil any more but use pre-prepared paper images that can be taken down, thereby avoiding a vandalism charge. The book will show the work of 20 artists, with photographs of their work, an article about their work, and a fold-out paste-up. The fold-out pages are perforated so they can easily be removed. Some of the paste-ups will be laser cut with attaching tags so they can be popped out. There’s also an introductory interview with cult street artists Sten & Lex. Ollystudio is a London-based creative studio working in print, film, and art direction. Books designed by Ollystudio include Guerilla Art, Art by Tattooists: Beyond Flash for Laurence King, and monographs of artists Paul Insect, JR, David Choe, and Vhils for the Lazarides Gallery. Ollystudio authored and designed The Street Art Stencil Book (2010) and Stencil Republic (2012). • Contains 20 artworks by some of the world’s most talented street artists: just tear them out and paste them up anywhere • Highly original concept: the first book to examine this form of street art • Features interviews with each artist and images of the paste-up in situ • Innovative follow-up to The Street Art Stencil Book

Cut and Fold Techniques for Promotional Materials

I Used to Be a Design Student 50 Graphic Designers Then and Now

Paul Jackson

Frank Philippin and Billy Kiosoglou

Cut and Fold Techniques for Promotional Materials is a unique collection of over 40 attention-grabbing cut-and-fold designs that when printed and illustrated form memorable give-aways to promote and advertise services and products. The book provides a one-stop source for novelty promotional materials, many appearing in print for the first time. Following the elegant, easy-to-follow style of Paul Jackson’s other titles for Laurence King, Cut and Fold Techniques for Promotional Materials is an essential resource for marketing professionals and design students, and an inspirational guide to anyone looking to enhance the presentation of their product or service.

This book offers a rare chance to read what graphic designers feel about their education and profession. Fifty influential designers give the low-down about their student days and their professional lives. A piece of their college work is shown alongside an example of current work. Each designer also offers a key piece of advice and a warning, making this a must-read for anyone embarking on a career in design. Contributors include Stefan Sagmeister, James Goggin, Karlssonwilker, Studio Dumbar, Cornel Windlin, Daniel Eatock, Spin, Hyperkit, and Christian Küsters.

Paul Jackson is the author of over 30 books on paper arts and crafts. He has taught the techniques of folding on more than 150 universitylevel design courses in the UK, Germany, Belgium, the US, Canada, and Israel and been a 'folding consultant' for companies such as Nike and Siemens.

Frank Philippin and Billy Kiosoglou met while studying graphic design and set up Brighten the Corners after graduating from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1999. They now have studios in London and Stuttgart. Frank is Professor of Graphic Design at Darmstadt University.

No More Rules Mini Edition Graphic Design and Postmodernism

American Modernism Mini Edition Graphic Design, 1920–1960

Rick Poynor

R. Roger Remington

The last thirty-five years have seen profound upheavals in the field of graphic communication. One by one, the old certainties about the techniques and purposes of graphic design have been questioned and torn apart. Jettisoning rules that no longer seemed relevant in the postmodern era, designers and typographers have reassessed their roles and forged experimental new approaches. No More Rules is the first wide-ranging critical survey to attempt to make sense of these international developments. Each of the book’s key themes—origins, deconstruction, appropriation, technology, authorship, and opposition—is illuminated by stunning examples of work that has changed the way in which designers and their audiences think about graphic communication.

This is the first comprehensive survey of Modernist graphic design as it emerged in America in the period from 1920 and 1960 in various media—advertising, information design, brand identity, magazine design, book design, and posters. It examines the great works which by mid-century had defined American graphic design. The book begins with a section devoted to the emergence of Modernism and its major historical influence, such as European avant-garde movements, popular culture, educational innovations such as the Bauhaus School, architecture, industrial design, and photography. The heart of the book includes the key works of mid-century Modernism as it matured into a fully-formed American style, bringing together such great names as Alexey Brodovitch, Lester Beall, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Will Burtin, and Alvin Lustig. The final section looks at the impact of and reactions to this new movement as graphic design in America matured in the 1960s and beyond.

Rick Poynor founded Eye magazine in 1990, edited it for seven years and is now its resident columnist. He writes about design, media, and visual culture for Blueprint, Frieze, Adbusters, The Guardian, and many other publications. His other books published by Laurence King include Typographica and Communicate.

R. Roger Remington is Professor of Graphic Design at Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. His previous books include Nine Pioneers in American Graphic Design and Lester Beall: Trailblazer of American Graphic Design.

• An immensely readable analysis of how postmodern thought and practice has molded graphic design • Breaks down this broad field of graphic design activity into key developments and themes, each richly illustrated • Written by a well-respected design critic • New, attractive format

• The first comprehensive survey of Modernist graphic design as it emerged in America between 1920 and 1960 • Includes advertising, information design, identity, magazine design, print, dimensional design, and posters • New, attractive format

Design Incubator A Prototype for New Design Practice

Detail in Contemporary Bar and Restaurant Design

Patrick Chia

Drew Plunkett and Olga Reid

Artist, craftsman, engineer, ethnographer, psychologist, entrepreneur, agent of change – is a designer one of these or a blend of all? What is a designer’s role in our current global and social landscape? The Design Incubation Centre was established to explore and probe these questions in depth within a rigourous and research-oriented context in the Division of Industrial Design at the National University of Singapore. Arranged by themes and consisting of documentary photographs, illustrated sketches, renderings and diagrams as well as articles and texts, this book presents an extensive archive of projects and workshops in product and research development. Interspersed with insights and reflections from team members past-and-present, this book serves as a handbook for designers who seek to incorporate unique, progressive methods and approaches into their personal or professional practices as well as a retrospective monograph on the Design Incubation Centre.

Bars and restaurants need to be assertive. Customers tend not to visit them to satisfy basic appetites for food or drink but for the social opportunities. Their interiors need to occupy the imagination of their customers and to whet the appetite for a return visit. The design that gets the formula right will do as much to prolong the life of the business as the products on offer. This book includes a wide range of international projects and for each one there is a descriptive text, color photographs, floor plans, sections and construction, and decorative details. A bonus CD-ROM contains all the drawings as printed in the book, in both EPS and DWG (generic CAD) formats.

Patrick Chia is the founding director of the Design Incubation Centre (DIC). Established in 2006, DIC is Singapore’s first dedicated industrial design research laboratory. DIC’s unique team composition and broad-ranging capabilities have enabled it to work on diverse research projects and collaborative workshops with organisations in academia, government, NGOs, and the design industry.

Drew Plunkett was Head of the Department of Interior Design at the Glasgow School of Art. He is the author of Drawing for Interior Design (2009), Construction and Detailing for Interior Design (2010) and coauthor, with Olga Reid, of Detail in Contemporary Retail Design (2012). Olga Reid is a practicing interior designer at Urban Salon, London. • Unprecedented and in-depth examination of contemporary bar and restaurant design • Packed with detail drawings, all redrawn to a consistent style and quality • Invaluable for interior designers and architects as well as students
