EVERY DAY, sports-loving Americans kick, throw, and hit balls across fields, over nets, and onto greens. This new pane of 16

stamps captures the spirit of fun and friendly competition with playfully bold imagery plus a little something extra. Have A Ball! features vibrant illustrations of eight popular sports balls used in school athletics and community leagues across the nation. Each one has a distinctive feel and tactile attributes that make it both familiar and beloved: the raised stitching on a baseball, the rubbery ridges on a kickball, the dimpled depressions in a golf ball, the seamed panels of a volleyball. Art Director Greg Breeding worked with designer Mike Ryan and illustrator Daniel Nyari to carefully map out ways to simplify and amplify these characteristics in the stamp artwork. Pebbled surfaces were rendered as graphic dot patterns; stitching and rubber seams were enlarged; ball segment edges were thickened, to convey depth. This selective exaggeration skillfully Terekhov Igor/Shutterstock

3

communicates the defining attributes of each ball, particularly critical at stamp scale. “I collected soccer balls as a child,” Ryan says, “and I’m a 37-yearold who still plays soccer. But I felt most nostalgic while designing the kickball. Who doesn’t have a memory of a kickball game? My sons and I have every one of these balls in our closet. If we choose one ball to take with us to the playground, it’s always the kickball, because you can play every ball game with a kickball. “One obvious challenge of creating round stamps,” he adds, “was how to resolve that for the football, which is most commonly seen from the side (an elongated spheroid). Yet it’s round when you’re on the receiving end. “Also, college footballs have a stripe, but pro footballs don’t. We decided to add the stripe as one additional piece of DNA to make the football recognizable.” The creative team also wanted to add an element of interactivity, and specialty printing techniques provided an opportunity. To emphasize the inherent tactile characteristics of each ball, Ryan elected to use a high-viscosity coating. Essentially a faux embossing technique, the thick, clear coating is applied to selected areas on each stamp, reinforcing the underlying illustration with an actual raised surface. Ryan thoughtfully considered which sections of the artwork ought to be elevated with coating and which areas should remain flat, based on construction of the actual balls and the way they feel when handled. He then created a template for each of the eight designs to mark which areas should be “embossed” during stamp production. The result? A visually striking pane that invites a touch and evokes fond thoughts of favorite sports. Whether you love a swish, a serve, a strike, or a spike, we know you’ll have a ball with these stamps.

The stamps were printed using offset lithography, followed by a high-viscosity clear coating applied to selected areas of each ball. The left column shows three of the final eight designs and the right column, the coating mask constructed for each. Areas in black received the coating, creating a faux embossed effect on the finished stamps.

THE ICONIC BEHIND THE EVERYDAY A conversation with illustrator Daniel Nyari

Daniel Nyari was a natural choice to create the Have A Ball! stamps. “As early as age 4 or 5, I remember drawing the soccer players I saw on TV,” says the Romania-born illustrator, who currently lives in New York City. That childhood obsession with soccer then led to his prolific career as a sports illustrator. Despite the obvious simplicity of these recreational objects, Nyari found himself approaching the project from a bigger, philosophical perspective. “Sports balls are iconic — deeply integrated into the social fabric of community,” he says. “Sports are more than just a game but are about watching sports with people and the moments they create.” So part of Daniel Nyari’s goal was to accurately represent eight tangible objects, yes, but also capture the idea of sports meaning so very much more.

Unique use of technology in heat-activated stamp

of the sun on August 21, 2017. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon totally blocks the sun, casting a shadow on Earth. The last solar eclipse seen on the U.S. mainland was in 1979 — and only in the northwestern area of the country. This summer’s eclipse will sweep across the entire nation, casting a 70-mile-wide shadow path. The eclipse will be visible first in Oregon and conclude about 90 minutes later off the South Carolina coast. The Total Eclipse of the Sun stamps commemorate this extraordinary event by using special heat-activated technology. The stamps are printed with thermochromic ink, so that when you press on the black circle of the stamp with your finger, an image of the full moon will be gradually revealed. Art Director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamps, following the style of the 2016 Views of Our Planets stamps. “I loved working on the planet set,” he says, “and was excited to extend that presentation to these stamps.” The stamp image shows a photograph of the solar eclipse seen over Libya in March 2006. This summer’s eclipse will give many Americans the chance to witness a striking celestial phenomenon and learn about the incredible star that warms and lights our planet. Alcalá is planning on traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, to witness the eclipse. “Hopefully it will turn out pretty spectacularly,” he says.

Roosevelt’s 1932 election led to the creation of the New Deal — a broad array of innovative federal programs. The intention? To provide temporary relief to a nation gripped by 25-percent unemployment through government jobs created primarily to keep people from going homeless and hungry. Hardly busywork, many of the projects contributed hugely to the nation’s infrastructure. Employment renewed people’s sense of purpose and bolstered their confidence and morale. As part of the New Deal, the Works Progress Administration (later renamed the Work Projects Administration) created projects that produced works of lasting value, supported national ideals, and had enduring influence on the arts. One such specialized project, Federal Project Number One, employed writers, theater professionals, musicians, artists, and others. The Poster Division created designs to publicize those and a wide variety of other New Deal enterprises. At its peak, the Federal Art Project employed 5,000 talented, experienced artists nationwide. In total, it generated some 35,000 designs and printed approximately two million posters, which were displayed on kiosks, trains, and buses, and in libraries, schools, and other municipal buildings. Posters promoted themes such as domestic tourism, health, education, recreation, and the arts. Promoting travel to national parks, for instance, fueled American pride and identity, supported local economies, and encouraged Americans to experience the roads, trails, and cabins being built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, another New Deal program. Spirited, bold, and modern, the WPA posters provided opportunities for unemployed artists while helping inspire the nation toward economic recovery.

the 20th state on December 10, 1817. In celebration of the state’s 200th anniversary and with a nod to its musical heritage, this new stamp features a photograph of a musician’s hands playing the guitar. Many of America’s cultural icons called Mississippi home, including musicians B.B. King, Elvis Presley, and Tammy Wynette, and authors William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, and Tennessee Williams. The delightful name of the state is derived from a Native American word that means “great water” or “father of waters.” Among its earliest inhabitants were the Natchez, Choctaw, and Chickasaw tribes. In the 18th century, the territory that would become Mississippi was a point of contention among France, Great Britain, and Spain; Spain finally ceded the land to the United States in the 1790s. Mississippi’s rich soil and abundant rivers and forests quickly attracted settlers. The Delta, the northwest section of the state, is renowned as the birthplace of the Delta blues. A uniquely American genre that grew out of traditional African-American work songs, the musical style continues to move people today. Although the state still faces economic and social challenges, Mississippi has seen a reverse migration, as many people have returned home or moved there for the first time. Visitors will find numerous attractions in the state’s parks and historic landmarks, and music aficionados can trace the Mississippi Blues Trail to discover the deep roots of modern music.

permanently damaged by spinal meningitis, Robert Panara went on to teach and profoundly influence the Deaf world. The 16th stamp in the Distinguished Americans series honors Panara (1920-2014), who inspired generations of students with his powerful use of American Sign Language to convey Shakespeare and other works of literature. With his role in the founding of the National Theatre of the Deaf, he was instrumental in providing deaf actors with a venue for thriving in the performing arts. In his new silent world, Panara developed a passion for reading. To learn sign language, he attended the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. While there, he began to appreciate the power and artistry of American Sign Language and to consider how music and poetry could be expressed through the hands. Panara fostered his love of literature at Gallaudet College (now University), in Washington, D.C., from 1940 to 1945. After earning a master’s degree in English from New York University (the first deaf person to do so), he returned to Gallaudet to teach English. He became a widely admired teacher — known for his dynamism, innovative techniques, and passion for poetry and English literature. To bring characters to life, Panara acted out the narrative, combining a mix of sign language, mime, and speech to entertain and instruct a diverse student population. After nearly two decades at Gallaudet, Panara left in 1967 to accept a position as the first deaf faculty member of the new National Technical Institute for the Deaf, where he taught for the next 20 years. In addition to teaching, Panara made significant contributions to the field of Deaf Studies. His inspirational life is the subject of Harry G. Lang’s Teaching from the Heart and Soul: The Robert F. Panara Story (2007), part of the Deaf Lives Series published by Gallaudet University Press.

Nearly all of the proceeds of these stamps, issued by the U.S. Department of the Interior, help protect bird and wildlife habitats. A Summer of Celebrations FROM ANNIVERSARIES to baby showers and birthday

Practical Tips for Making Beautiful Mail

parties, summer is a season marked by busy social calendars. No matter what kind of celebration you are attending or planning, we have the perfect stamps and products for your mail. Summer is the time to make some lemonade, play lawn games, and throw a garden party. With flowers in full bloom, invite your friends to a backyard celebration with an invitation that uses the Botanical Art stamps. If you are in the process of planning a special celebration, we have new stamps to complement your invitations. Use the Celebration Boutonniere stamp (or the Celebration Corsage two-ounce stamp if needed) to lend some romance to your envelopes. For more ideas on how to give your invitations a special touch, see “Advice From a Calligrapher.” Hosting a baby shower is a wonderful way to celebrate parents and anticipate their bundle of joy. Add some sweetness to your shower invitations by using the Quilled Paper Heart stamps on the envelopes. Throw a big birthday bash for yourself or a loved one, complete with a lavish invitation. If you use an oversized or square envelope, finish it off with the cheerful Eastern-Tailed Blue stamp. To send a note of thanks to guests after a party, wedding, or shower, use the Celebration Corsage and Celebration Boutonniere notecards. These charming cards are ideally suited for expressing gratitude on any occasion. Enjoy your summer of celebrations and beautiful mail!

Advice From a Calligrapher Abby Farson Pratt, a calligrapher in Charlottesville, Virginia, shares some advice for your special celebration. 1. Contact a calligrapher before your invitations have printed. Calligraphers can usually only manage one to two jobs at a time, and it might take a few weeks to address 100 envelopes. A good rule of thumb is to find a calligrapher once you have ordered your invitations. 2. Talk to your calligrapher about the style of your event. Your calligrapher will give advice about the type of writing that would best suit your event and invitations and help you debate whether to use a formal style of writing or a more modern script. 3. Prepare your guest list carefully. Write guest names exactly as you want them to appear on the envelopes. Double check and then triple check the spellings, street addresses, and zip codes. Your calligrapher will let you know if there are inconsistencies in the list but won’t know, for instance, if your aunt’s surname is misspelled. 4. Discuss any other calligraphy needs you may have. A calligrapher can help with escort cards, place cards, signs, menus, or just about anything else that could use a handwritten touch. Bring up your ideas early in the process so that your calligrapher can carve out the necessary time.

The Petite and Portable Way to Carry Stamps Vintage stamp boxes on display In the Victorian era, if you needed to get a message to someone quickly, it was crucial to have stamps on hand. When street mailboxes and home mail delivery became commonplace in the 1880s, stamp boxes (also known as stamp cases) were popular personal objects. People would often carry small stamp boxes in a pocket or bag so that they could send mail on the go. The boxes protected the stamps and kept them accessible for easy and fast communication. Stamp boxes were generally a few inches in length and made from a variety of materials, including sterling silver, aluminum, brass, and leather. Some boxes were designed to look like envelopes or books; some were ornate and included the owner’s monogram. And some stamp boxes had small compartments to carry other objects, such as matches or slips of paper. The American Philatelic research library, co-located with the American Philatelic Society (APS) in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, keeps a selection of antique stamp boxes on permanent display, with many others in its archives. “Collectors and noncollectors alike are drawn to the stamp boxes,” says Tara Murray, Director of information services and librarian at APS and American Philatelic research library. “They give you a slice of a different time period, and they’re really beautiful.” The stamp booklet format is the modern iteration of the stamp box, with the booklet’s perforations and folds making it easy to transport and protect stamps. The APS is planning to bring a selection of the stamp boxes to exhibit at the APS StampShow in Richmond, Virginia, on August 3-6, 2017. Don’t miss a chance to see these miniature artifacts in person.
