OUR FOUNDER: CORKY BYER “MY NAME IS CORKY BYER, AND I’M A DEVOTED FAN. A LOVING FATHER. AND I PAY IT FORWARD.”
“My life started in a middle income Jewish suburban family in the suburbs of Los Angeles. My father owned a liquor store. As early as I can remember, I was taught to work hard and take risks. I chose to journey to Israel during my teens with my parents, connecting with my family’s roots and being the good son. It was during this time, far away from American society, that my inherent desire to connect with the motherland led me to the spirit of Rock n Roll, and I haven’t looked back since. I would search out artists and write to their record labels, hoping for any small hint of acknowledgement and recognition. And one day, I got something back…a Flash Cadillac album. And then I kept writing…onto Barry Manilow care of Arista records. Next thing I knew, I received a personal letter from Barry himself. Being his first Israeli fan letter, Barry felt inclined to reach out and we became pen pals. The letters kept going, and the autographs kept coming. Yearning to return to the states and on the brink of becoming a man, I returned to California against my parent’s wishes. After losing my first job and having no source of support, at 18 I ended up on the streets of Los Angeles broke, homeless and living out of my car for six months. One day, someone knocked at my window. It was a lady named Susan Pierce, who owned a security company called West Coast Ranger Patrol. She offered me a job, gave me an apartment to live in, paid my start up expenses
and advanced me a month’s salary. Susan Pierce likely saved my life. My career eventually advanced out of security and into the finance industry, and then onto an entrepreneurial venture of building an antique mall. Over the years, as I received more, I gave more. And for the past 37 years, I have paid it forward in the name of Susan Pierce. I am a collector of things because at one point I had nothing. If one is good, two is better, and if two is better then 10 is best. I’ve been collecting autographs and signed memorabilia for over 40 years. My collection includes over 7000 pieces, covering various fields of entertainment including music, sports, politics, movies/TV and historical figures. I have attended autograph shows and trade expos all over the world and realized something important was missing…a world-class Autograph Show dedicated to Rock ‘n’ Roll! I enjoy spending time with my young son, Casey. I want my son to learn that you can actually have a dream, gamble to make it work and affect people’s lives in a positive way. I am building a legacy to leave to my son. When I am gone, I hope that whenever anyone mentions an autograph, celebrity or memorabilia he will think of his dad. I have written checks to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Center, in good times and in hard times. When times were hard in the memo I would write, “I wish I could do more.” Now, with The Rock n Roll Autograph Show, together we can. Rock n Roll can save lives, are you on board?”
