Where There’s Smoke is a novel written by Sandra Brown. It tells about the hatred among the characters. Hatred is interesting to analyze as it often appears based on many factors and reasons dealing with the human being’s behavior. Hatred is caused by the anxiety. Hatred is the condition or state of relations in which one person hates another; the emotion or feeling of hate; active dislike, detestation, enmity, ill will, malevolence. And anxiety is an unpleasant emotion characterized by a feeling of vague, unspecified harm. This thesis discusses the character’s hatred of the novel and also the causes and effects of the hatred. The approach used in this discussion is psychological approach. It is used to analyze the main character’s psychological conflict because with this approach can be acquired what the internal problems of the main characters. Furthermore, this thesis also applies Freudian’s theory of personality, especially theory of anxiety to obtain a deep analysis of the anxiety and hatred among the characters. The method of analysis used in this thesis is inductive method. It is a form of reasoning from the specific to the general. The discussion of the thesis goes to the particular cases to the general. This thesis is conducted by means of library research in which the materials, data and information are collected from several books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and internet.
