discovered that the key to a good festival is quality artistic events ..... Featuring George Wilding, J.C. Leonard, Ethe
Welcome

A welcome from the President This year, in which we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we are honoured to have Judith Weir, Master of the Queen’s Music, as Patron of Calne Music and Arts Festival. Judith, who was Composer in Residence at the 1977 Festival, still takes a keen interest in the town and will return again this year. To quote Judith: ‘It is great to see this home-grown event thriving even more than I could have imagined. They have clearly discovered that the key to a good festival is quality artistic events with a local handle.’ Judith Weir’s Music for 247 Strings will be performed at the Festival (13) and Judith with be contributing to the evening with David White (23). For 40 years the Festival has continued, through the hard work during the year of the various committees, the many dedicated volunteers who give their time during Festival week, and the support of local schools, choirs, musicians and artists. Calne is indeed a culturally rich town. We are pleased to announce that Chilvester Financial have become the main sponsor of our Festival. Sponsorship has also been received from other local companies for specific days or events. We are indeed most grateful to these local companies for showing their commitment to promoting the Festival to the wider community and to recognising the local aspect of our ethos towards the Arts. We are always keen to welcome new ‘Friends’, so please spread the word among friends, neighbours and newcomers to the town. Details can be found at the end of the brochure. We very much look forward to sharing with you this wealth of music and art and hope that you will enjoy the quality and diversity of the events planned.

Music

Music Programme Once again we have brought together a wide ranging and diverse musical programme which not only promotes the local musical talent of our area but also welcomes back some past performers. On our opening nights we invite you to performances of “A Decent Girl” given by our local community theatre group (2 and 3). The opening weekend also see the folk of ever popular Finnegans Wake (4), the return of BJ Big Band (5), a special recital by guitarist Rod Faulkner (6) and the Festival debut recital by Matthew Moore and the Larkin Strings (9). Other highlights include an evening demonstrating the diversity of the violin, with a virtuosic performance by John Kane (13), followed by Georgia Browne with a Celtic CODA (14). The talented students and staff from the music department at St Mary’s School will present two contrasting concerts (17 and 18) and later in the week we welcome back pianist Jacob Byrne (20) and an evening with the Festival’s founder, David White (23). We mark the 120th Anniversary of Oscar Hammerstein’s birth with a special event featuring some of his most popular songs (25). Not forgetting two new events at the White Hart (7 and 26) and our lunchtime concert series where we welcome back Somerford Scribes (24). We are delighted to involve so many local schools and young musicians (12, 15, 17, 22 and 29), especially at a time when music education is in the spotlight both locally and nationally; we should celebrate the work of the next generation of musicians. To conclude the 2015 Festival, we welcome Julian Philips and his Boogie Woogie piano playing. Join us for what promises to be an entertaining evening of Boogie Woogie, Folk and Blues (32); the ultimate way to finish our Festival!

And how is it that when women have publically questioned these inequalities they have received death threats through social media? How is it that some of these threats were from other women? Following on from John Bentley Community Theatre’s success at last year’s Festival with Our Town (a musical written about Calne itself), A Decent Girl explores the pressures on young women today in the wake of advancing technology and social media, whilst looking back at stories of women throughout history.
