In the 1970s, a factory security guard was in for a surprise when he stopped Wilfried Bork from Volkswagen Quality Assurance. Opening the luggage compartment of the suspicious Golf 1 revealed a grinning Manfred Saake. The mystery was soon solved: In those days they lacked a vibration track, yet Bork and Saake were searching for a specific driving noise. And as a result, Saake wound up in the luggage compartment.


This amusing anecdote from the development of the Golf is but one charming example of many similar stories, any of which could also explain the special spirit of the Golf at Volkswagen. Today every market introduction of a new Golf also involves high-technology quality assurance during the development and production of components such as engines, transmissions, seats or suspension parts. For example, sound designers determine hundreds of precise sound patterns for the new Golf 7. Luckily this is now possible without having to sit in the luggage compartment. Yet this journey approximately 40 years ago remains the foundation of an unequalled success story: The Volkswagen Golf. That is also why people automatically speak of the Golf class when referring to the compact segment.

Three great designers met to discuss the "Golf Generations". Giorgio Giugiaro, Hartmut Warkuß and

Walter de Silva. They were responsible for creating the most stylistically important Golf generations – I, IV and VI. Giugiaro and Warkuß delivered the genes, namely the fundamental design and defined the Golf's DnA. These were the notes orchestrating the Golf's song of success. De Silva and his team interpret the current "Sound“ of this icon. Modern, forward-looking, attractive. In other words, this is the recipe for the success of the Golf generations: Designers use Giugiaro's score as an orientation aid, yet repeatedly offer new surprises with ground-breaking sound variations. Giorgio Giugiaro is the perfect person to ask about the birth of the Golf.

In an interview with skriptmanufaktura, the customer magazine belonging to Volkswagen's "Die Gläserne Manufaktur", he discussed the spirit of the brand: "I can still remember the day when I met all of the company's first-class engineers and each of them presented their outstanding expertise in their own special area: Lighting, engines, windows, etc. Everyone expected us to recreate a new version of the Beetle. Yet when they saw the drawings of the future Golf, they strove to retain the spirit of that design by attempting to omit certain details without neglecting the safety aspect." Giugiaro set up a car gallery at his design company, Italdesign, in Moncalieri. Among the exhibits on display: The special edition of a four-door Golf GT. Today, the most successful Volkswagen of all time simultaneously represents a lifestyle spanning multiple decades. The author, Florian Illies,

went so far as to identify millions of Golf drivers as an entire "Golf Generation" in his bestseller with the same name. In the USA, the "rabbit" is also regarded as a style icon of certain periods.

That is why the Golf has gone on to become the generation-spanning embodiment of a modern understanding of mobility. The latest coup in this impressive success story: The Golf 7. An interview with Kristin Boese

Ride the Kite. In 2001 the now 39-year-old Kristin Boese discovered kitesurfing. Since then she has been unstoppable on the water and the waves, and has won nine kitesurfing world championship titles. An unequalled performance! We met her at the 21st Century Beetle Kitesurf World Cup in St. Peter-Ording and talked with her about the sport, the lifestyle and, of course, about cars.

Hey Kristin, do you remember when you got on a board for the very first time? I started kiteboarding very late. The first time I used a kiteboard was in spring 2002. In summer 2001 I worked as a surfing teacher in Wustrow and got to know several kiteboarders. In late summer 2001 I learned how to control a kite and first took to the water on a kiteboard in spring 2002 – I couldn't wait for the summer. Your greatest success, new goals – What was it, what could it be? Naturally, one of the greatest successes was my first world championship title. That still holds a special place in my heart, of course. What is left to achieve after nine world championship titles? I hope to have the opportunity to represent Germany at the Olympics in Rio in 2016. That would be a dream come true! Do you ever stop learning? No, of course not! There is always something new to learn. Which is good, because otherwise it would become boring – and I cannot live with boredom. After all the successes you have achieved, does the job or your sport still remain interesting? I seek out new challenges which are closely related to the sport in order to keep it interesting. This includes organising the "Touring the Waves" world championship, for example, and a foundation for encouraging women, writing books or making the sport an Olympic discipline. I always need the mental challenge – that is very important to me. Hawaii or St. Peter-Ording – which is more attractive, what makes the difference? Naturally, SPO is always great – because I am back in Germany and see my family, who live near Berlin. However, SPO is only beautiful in the summer – In winter I would rather be in Hawaii (laughs). Where else in the world would you like to kiteboard where you have not yet been? Well, there aren't very many places left (considers). I have not been to the Black Sea or to the Antarctic yet, even though it was on the cards. At contests: What is the relationship among the contestants? Most of the old riders have a friendly

relationship with each other on the water, despite the competitive situation. But on the water you are and you always remain the competition and everyone wants to win – of course! Nevertheless, we are friends. You travel with the others on the tour all year and you spend a lot of time together. When you began who were your role models and/ or did you even have any role models? If yes,

spontaneous trip over the weekend and were asked to choose the destination, where would you go? Regardless of which continent? Yes… anywhere! Then I would go to Byron Bay in Australia! This is a small beach in the easternmost part of Australia and is also one of the most famous small towns in Australia. The way of life here is still like it was in old times.

for me and I was more nervous than I had been in a long time! A competition like this always involves a certain amount of luck and I am always nervous because something could always go wrong. Luckily, this weekend went well. It was a hard competition and I was pretty exhausted at the end. I would like to have added one more title to my nine world championship titles, but second place at this competition is also a fantastic success. Congratulations! Thanks! (Laughs) One last question: Explain to someone, who has never heard of a kitesurfing, this sport's attraction. Kitesurfing is a feeling of freedom. On the water you fight with and also against the forces of nature. You are alone and when you succeed in controlling how high and how far the kite carries you, then it is an indescribably beautiful feeling… I love it! Classic remains cult. What makes a classic a classic? Why do some designs remain timeless – regardless of fashion or taste? Perhaps because style arises where function and aesthetics meet? Regardless of whether the classic itself is a Volkswagen Beetle or a tweed flat cap. A man looks into the camera, leaning casually on one arm. He wears a cream pullover, dark blue trousers combined with white tennis socks and loafers. Behind him his car: the chromed hubcaps and polished bumper shining in the sunlight. The car is a fire-red Volkswagen Beetle convertible. The name of the man is Paul Newman.

The picture was taken during the late 1960s and immortalises two famous figures for all time. Because classics are timeless. Whereas taste may change over the years, some lines remain untouched by the passage of time and create milestones throughout the history of design. They may be quoted and even slightly modified, yet their true form always remains apparent. The shape of the Beetle has been contemporary ever since the 1970s and Newman's style can be seen today on runways in Milan and Paris under the name "preppy style". The term "preppy style" arose in the 1950s: In the United States, the abbreviation "prep" described pupils at private college preparatory schools and "preppy" described the neat and sporty clothing style of the well-off New England students.

Within the space of only a few years the look went on to become the most popular dress code in Hollywood. Not only with Paul Newman: Steve McQueen frequently wore a trenchcoat and Clint Eastwood polo shirts, whereas Warren Beatty preferred chinos. The stars of the silver

When one asks what makes a classic a classic, then it quickly becomes apparent that a classic's roots often lie in its effectiveness. There is a reason why designers, artists and architects have long wrestled with the challenge of "form follows function". This had precious little to do with fashion. Rather, protection against rain, heat or cold were the central issues. The clothing had to be functional – and longlasting. The materials were high-quality and durable, the design simple and yet sophisticated. "There are designs which cannot be improved" was the slogan of a Volkswagen advertisement at the beginning of the 1960s. This same slogan could be said to apply just as well to the preppy style's immortal fashion classics. Whether a Golf

or a raincoat, a Volkswagen Beetle or a T-shirt: They all began with the idea of convincing functionality, the desire for durability, the love of detail, and the drive to create a lasting, rational and reliable product for many people. And in the end? In the end, we will sit in a Volkswagen and on the passenger seat lies a racing jacket bearing the famous red and white stripes or a pouch bag bearing our shopping. We put on a pair of fine leather driving gloves, adjust our T-shirt beneath the seatbelt and drive off into the sunset. Perhaps today, perhaps in 20 years.
