Role Foundation Volunteer Handbook

About Us Despite the high levels of regional and international investment in Bali’s tourism sector many people are not beneficiaries of rapid development, whilst at the same time they are impacted by loss of arable land, environmental degradation and development driven inflation on the prices of everyday basic commodities. In addition, development linked overfishing has reduced traditional job opportunities in this sector for coastal communities. Labor-related immigration into Bali has increased competition in the employment market and this particularly impacts the poor and unskilled from traditional agricultural and coastal economies. Illiterate and unskilled people have limited work opportunities and are increasingly unemployed, underemployed and underpaid. To address these issues Rivers, Oceans, Lands and Ecology (ROLE) Foundation operates two(2) educational campuses in Nusa Dua, Bali, for the educationally and economically underprivileged. At BaliWISE Education Centre, Jalan Siligita, Educational Programs provide free education, job-skills training and job-search facilities for women from underprivileged backgrounds to be able to access opportunities within the Tourism sector. BaliWISE seeks to help these unskilled disadvantaged women by providing accessible basic education and vocational training. BaliWISE works to increase the employment opportunities available to women from poor communities by providing accessible education, vocational training, and job placement as well as assistance in starting up eco-friendly micro businesses. At the Island Sustainability Education Centre (ISEC), Educational Programs provide information, training and services to students from rural Bali to develop eco-friendly social business plans for their future to provide a better life for themselves, their families and their local communities. ISEC is also an education site for primary school students to learn about environmental and health issues. In addition ROLE Foundation seeks to revitalize coastal environments and through sustainability education and environmental assistance projects. ISEC is Role Foundation’s Management Centre for rural and coastal

environmental projects to safeguard and maintain the integrity of Bali’s coastal and hinterland environment by teaching healthy environmental practices and creating eco-friendly jobs for some of Bali’s poorest people. What goes at Island Sustainability Center? Active working model of the Waste-to-Wonder program: collection and recycling of solid waste, production of compost to grow food, reforestation, renewable energy and water harvesting. Educational Programs for Women, Children, and Local Communities Exchange of Skills and ideas between overseas visitors and local communities. Management of Local Environmental Projects. ISC currently manages and partners with 6 environmental assistance projects.

The Role Foundation believes that poverty and environmental degradation are inextricably linked. To address this problem, ROLE has set up education and training facilities in the local community of Nusa Dua in order for the local community to generate sustainable income and at the same time minimize environmental harm.

Volunteering with Role Foundation Everyone is welcome to stay and volunteer with us! Our experience with volunteers, from all over the world, has been very positive. They have created a vibrant community atmosphere here. Living and working together and sharing experiences contribute greatly to the development and evolution of projects at the ISC. The volunteer program has been, and continues to be, developed by our volunteers. A wide variety of daily tasks are undertaken by ISC volunteers including tree-planting, mulching and watering according to the season, outreach and education, gardening in the organic food garden, training and skills exchange with our local staff, marketing / media and graphic design, maintaining the community area and spending time with the community. Work schedules are flexible to allow time to explore the island’s natural beauty.

Free facilities for volunteers include kitchen, electricity to charge personal items, a yoga space and an exercise park / playground. ISC is always open to other project ideas you may want to implement during your stay. We appreciate creativity and initiative and welcome any ideas you may have to improve our project and our community. Solid Waste Management Separation Station About 60% of all waste in Bali is organic. Bali produces 20.000 tons of waste daily, that is a 10km wall 2m high and 1m wide. Use less of the world’s precious resources. Reduce, plan your purchases for less packaging. Reuse, bring your own reusable bag for shopping. Recycle, separate your waste into organic and recyclable waste (bottles, plastic, paper).

The Nursery Seedlings raised in the nursery are planted on the ISC reforestation site and given to the communities free of charge. Since, over 4000 seedlings have been freely distributed by ISC and planted by the communities of Bali. Nursery work typically includes preparing the soil, bagging seedlings, weeding, watering, and transplanting.

Jamu Bar Jamu is a very old Indonesian traditional medicine. It helps to treat a large variety of health issues and it boosts vitality and libido. Jamu making provides work opportunities for many women.

Permaculture / Organic Gardens Permaculture principles can turn a desert into an oasis. It cuts massive fossil fuel costs of growing, preparing, packaging and transportation of foods. It needs less work for great results and creates a sustainable world. Permaculture is a branch of ecological design, ecological engineering, and environmental design which develops sustainable architecture/human settlements and self-maintained agricultural systems modeled from natural ecosystems.

Land, Care and Fair Share The core tenets of permaculture are: -Take care of the earth: Provision for all life systems to continue and multiply. This is the first principle, because without a healthy earth, humans cannot flourish. -Take care of the people: Provision for people to access those resources necessary for their existence. -Share the surplus: Healthy natural systems use outputs from each element to nourish others. We humans can do the same. By governing our own needs, we can set resources aside to further the above principles.

Free Range Ducks They contribute to the garden by eating bugs, food scraps and their manure is a great fertilizer. Free Range animals are less likely to catch diseases. Their meat tastes better than caged animals. Free range meat is more humane. Free range means the ducks roam freely for food, rather than being confined in an enclosure.

Snail Farm The human body needs protein. Snails are a cheap source of protein and nutrition. They are easy to cultivate and farm. A snail farm can be a micro business for unskilled and low income families.

Natural Dyes Chemical Dyes discharged into the environment cause harm and many diseases. Natural Dyes do not harm the earth or the water. As a micro business Natural Dyes provide jobs for local people because the demand for natural dyed clothes is high.

Marine Center, Jobs and Business Education Destroying the reefs and marine life takes the livelihood off coastal communities. Role teaches people about the importance of the oceans of our planet. They create rain through condensation and storms through currents and heat. Role educates how to protect our oceans.

Renewable Energy Use renewable energy to stop global warming and decrease energy consumption. The use of fossil fuels has to be reduced immediately. Pollution from natural energy creation is minimal.

Volunteer Testimonials Danny de Klerk (22 years old), South Africa – January 2013 I really didn’t know what to expect coming to work for the Role Foundation having never worked on a farm, knowing nothing about permaculture and not understanding a single word of Indonesian, but within the first half hour of being here I felt completely at home and relaxed. My first job working here was under the guidance of Pak Ketut who has been working at the park since it was opened. He has been so great at helping and teaching me and making me feel at home during my time here. Since my first job with Pak Ketut, I have had equally amazing experiences with the rest of the staff, they are all so friendly and welcoming and always willing to help. The park itself is a beautiful place to work and stay. We are constantly working on the park, building, planting, repairing and organizing – there is always a job to do, and it is so great to see a project come together and to see the park develop. I have really enjoyed my time here and hope that I can return at some point in the future.

Barbara Nickl (26 years old), Germany – January 2013 I always wanted to do some volunteer work with a NGO, and I found Role Foundation very interesting because of its environmental and sustainable aspects. I wanted to learn more about that and the Balinese Culture. As I am doing a lot of work on the computer, it feels good to have an office in such a green environment and to be surrounded by plants. I feel that I’m helping a lot and that is important for me to know that my work has a positive impact on Role Foundation and the local Community.

Responsibilities and Rules of Conduct At Role Foundation you are a guest of the local flora and fauna in their very home. You must respect their ecosystem. It is shameful if you: 1. Steal in their home. 2. Pollute and contaminate their environment with rubbish and litter. 3. Distort their music, hymn and rhythm with excessive voice & noise. 4. Undermine the ecological equilibrium of their community. 5. Deprive them of their right to survive. As a visitor to the ISC, locals will notice your behaviour. Here are a few essential Do’s: • Remove footwear before entering anyone’s home. • Wear appropriate clothing. The ISC is a working farm community. Protect yourself from the heat and the sun. Cover your shoulders and midriff. We recommend a hat if you work outside and appropriate shoes (i.e. no high-heels). • Clean up after yourself. All volunteers must agree to follow those Rules of Conduct and Child Protection Policy.
