Volunteer Opportunity Income Tax Preparer
Commitment: Available from mid-February 2016 through June 2016, flexible hours and dates. Must commit to at least 2 shifts a week during March to June, when we have clinics on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Location: 815 Danforth Ave (Head Office), 1533 Victoria Park Ave, and other WoodGreen sites within the East York community. Program Overview: WoodGreen in collaboration with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) hosts an annual tax preparation clinic and arranges for volunteers to prepare income tax and benefit returns for eligible individuals who have a modest income and a simple tax situation. We have around 100 tax preparers who receive professional training to help clients file their taxes. Last year alone, we served over 4000 clients, putting approximately 3.5 million dollars back into the pockets of our community members. This program is largely driven by committed volunteers. This year, we are looking for 60-75 highly experienced volunteers who can join our dedicated team. Position Summary: Help clients submit tax returns using UFile software. Provide clients with information regarding the necessary documents required prior to providing an appointment. Ensure all formalities and concepts are fully explained to clients during their appointment. Attend mandatory training hosted by the CRA, as well as the Peer Help Training provided by WoodGreen Community Services. If applicable, volunteer may be required to perform translation services for clients who have limited English speaking skills. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Experience in filing taxes with a good understanding of Canadian tax laws and regulations, especially as they relate to marginalized communities, or willingness to learn. Currently enrolled or completed Accounting/Finance program or similar. Good computer and technology skills; experience working with UFile is an asset. Excellent communication skills. Familiarity with necessary and relevant taxation documents. Sensitivity to the needs and challenges faced by our clients, and compassionate to help and serve our community. Comfortable in working with a diverse group of volunteers and clients that come from all walks of life. Good time management skills to ensure the clinic starts promptly and the flow of the clinic runs smoothly. Good conflict resolution skills; ability to minimize disturbances within the clinic operation and ensure clients understand and are satisfied with the outcome of their tax returns based on providing your professional opinion. Positive interpersonal skills. Excellent attention to details. Ability to adapt to changes. Able to commit to at least 3 months for this year’s clinic; ability to commit annually for program development is an asset. Second language is an asset. Mandatory Training and Orientation: Orientation to WoodGreen’s programs, policies, and procedures. Canada Revenue Agency training. WoodGreen’s Peer Help training.
