Teaching tips Remind students how to use was and were by asking children to make sentences about where they were earlier in the day or on the previous evening. Write some of their sentences on the board, leaving a blank for the verb was or were. Encourage students to begin some sentences with I or he/she and others with you or the names of two people. For example, I _____ at the back of the class. Chantal and Joshua _____ at home. Ask students to tell you which verb to use to complete the sentences. Point out that we use was when there is only one person and were when there is more than one person.
