Webappendix: The state of medical education and practice in the UK: 2014
Definitions: Black and minority ethnic (BME) includes Asian, black, other ethnic groups and mixed ethnic groups. European Economic Area (EEA) graduates are doctors who gained their primary medical qualification in the EEA, but outside the UK, and who are EEA nationals or have European Community rights to be treated as EEA nationals. International medical graduates (IMGs) are doctors who gained their primary medical qualification outside the UK, EEA and Switzerland, and who do not have European Community rights to work in the UK. PMQ = place of primary medical qualification.

Age (years)
Doctors 50 years old and over are more likely to not have a licence than other age groups: 15% have no licence. The proportion of all doctors over 50 years old without a licence has increased by 70% since 2010.

The population of doctors who are unlicensed has grown particularly among EEA graduates and IMGs in the past three years.12% of EEA graduates and IMGs were unlicensed in 2013, compared with only 6.2% of UK graduates. Overall, just over 8% of doctors had no licence in 2013. This is an increase of 70% since 2010.
