Welcome to ECCE 2009 ou are cordially invited to participate in the 2009 Energy Conversion Congress and Expo (ECCE 2009) scheduled for 20–24 September 2009 at the DoubleTree Hotel in sunny San Jose, California. ECCE 2009 combines two of the most successful international conference programs—the IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference (PESC) and the technical programs of the Industrial Power Conversion Systems Department (IPCSD) (made up of the Electric Machines, Industrial Drives, Industrial Power Converter, and Power Electronics Devices Committees) at the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Annual Meeting—into one significant conference and exposition with a focus on energy conversion, efficiency, and sustainability. In addition to combining all relevant power electronics, devices, machines, and drives activities from the two conferences, this event will bring engineers, students, and academics together to enhance cooperation, start interdisciplinary dialogue, and encourage the exchange of ideas between these various constituents. This annual conference will be the premier venue in the United States for showcasing new technologies, concepts, and applications covering all aspects of energy conversion, and it will offer industry participants the opportunity to connect with their customers, vendors, and other researchers in the community. ECCE will also provide a neutral venue for industrywide standards activity that can

accelerate the development of new emerging energy-related products and markets. Participants include companies and individuals engaged in the research, development, manufacturing, support, application, and education in the energy conversion, efficiency, and sustainability areas. The conference will include technical sessions with unmatched technical quality, industrial sessions showing the latest developments from industry, tutorials that cover a wide range of topics, and an industrial exposition to showcase new technologies and products. Furthermore, participants can enjoy exciting panel discussions, cutting-edge keynote speeches from experts in relevant fields, industrial tours, and excellent social events. More than 600 technical papers, from both academia and industry, will be presented at this global conference, providing exposure on new trends and new technological opportunities. The industrial exhibition and expo includes traditional topics such as energy conversion, power electronics, motors, and motor drives and newer topics such as energy savings and efficiency, renewable energy sources, distributed generation, energy storage, grid control, and impact of carbon-constrained operation on energy conversion technologies. In addition, ECCE will provide a unique forum for participating industry sponsors to hold seminars for potential customers and to invite them to attend the exhibition. Tutorials that familiarize industry practitioners with the current state of the art will provide further opportunities to support company and

employee goals. The conference program is organized to maximize the interaction between attendees and the exhibitors. Energy conversion and energy savings are becoming global topics, requiring global solutions. Power electronics, devices, electrical drives, and machines are key enabling technologies to employ new energy sources while also realizing significant energy savings in many application areas, ranging from household appliances, industrial equipment, regenerative energy systems, automotive power trains, transportation propulsion systems, and electrical distribution and transmission systems. Even though the scope of the technical challenges is immense, the enabling technologies needed to meet these challenges are, fortunately, already resident within the technical committees of the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) and the IAS IPCSD Department. Recognizing this opportunity, PELS and IAS, with support from the IEEE Technical Activity Board, decided to conduct this conference to capitalize on the unique synergy of the technical activities of the two Societies, thereby bringing research in power electronics and energy conversion application engineering together in a unique and timely manner to meet our future energy challenges.
