THE MEANING OF DISCIPLESHIP The geography of today’s Gospel is significant. Jesus is completing his ministry in Galilee and beginning his journey to Jerusalem, where he will meet both death and resurrection. The prediction of his death placed here is the second of three in Mark’s Gospel, and as usual it is the occasion for an important teaching on the part of Jesus. Today that lesson is tied to the need for his disciples to embrace a ministry of service. A play on words in Aramaic would have linked the words “child” and “servant,” thus turning Jesus’ gesture of placing a child in their midst into an illustration of his understanding of himself as the Servant of the Lord. It is that same awareness of the meaning of their ministry that Jesus (and Mark) wishes to instill in the disciples. Theirs must be a ministry of service if they are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. And that service might even require of them that they be “handed over” to death. What would have been—in the culture of Jesus’ day— an ordinary discussion of social status (“who is the greatest”) becomes in Mark’s context a key insight into the meaning of discipleship for the disciples and for us.

We will be painting the interior of the Church on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13. Donations would be greatly appreciated so that we can purchase supplies in order to get the job done! Also, if you have gently used furnishings that could be donated to furnish the guest room in the Rectory, we would appreciate it. We are looking for living room furniture and a small chest of drawers or dresser. Thank you!

Looking for an easy way to support St. John School? How about donating Campbell's soup labels, Box Tops for Education, and aluminum cans?! Just glance at the products that you buy at the grocery and if you see these labels, cut them out and put them in the box in the Church lobby! We also have Publix Partners cards and Kroger Commitment that you can simply give to the cashier at checkout and the school receives a percentage. These fundraisers have brought in over $2500 last year!

St. John the Evangelist parish Religious Education program will begin September 23rd. Classes are held from 9-10am on Sundays. This includes all children preparing for First Communion and Confirmation. Registration is now available after Mass. Costs: $60 for one child and $80 for two or more. If you have questions, please contact Daphny Keel at 404-514-2256.

Catholic Charities Atlanta offers affordable counseling for children, adolescents, parents, individuals, couples and families. Ms. Neisa Pamfil is a highly qualified, bilingual professional counselor who will work with your schedule and meet you at St. John parish office. Call her at 404-733-3527 for appointments.

The AACCW Women’s Guild of St. John the Evangelist would like to thank everyone who donated used eyeglasses, cell phones and/or contributed items for the Baby Layette drive. St. John parishioners donated over 40 used cell phones for the Women of Domestic Violence and 142 pairs of used eyeglasses. The baby layette items collected were donated to Catholic Charities. Thank you for your generosity and for caring!

Thank you for the continued support of St. Vincent de Paul! Here’s a thought: if each person brought one item for the pantry, we could serve our clients and divert funds to help pay bills. We are in need of tuna, potted meats, canned chicken, pasta and pasta sauce. All donations can be dropped off in the Church lobby, or brought to the parish office during regular business hours. Our brothers and sisters in Christ thank you for your continued support!

The Knights of Peter Claver Council 340 will hold a Barbecue Dinner on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 2:00 P.M. till 7:00 P.M. The price will be $7.00 and $8.00. Tickets are on sale after mass. Contact Solomon Asemota at (770) 6036590 or (404) 702-0071 for details.

Stewardship Thoughts TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On the Byzantine calendar, September 23 is the feast of the Conception of John the Baptist. The Roman and Byzantine calendars have in common the other equinox- or solstice-derived dates of solemnities: December 25, March 25, and June 24. Scholars see strong evidence in the writings of the early Church Fathers for the fixing of these dates from the imagined “anniversary” of Gabriel’s appearance to Zechariah at Yom Kippur, which was thought to have coincided with the equinox as a day of “at-one-ment” between light and darkness. The spiritual writer Origen held to this date. The annunciation to Zechariah then set the date six months later for Mary’s conception of Jesus (March 25), and then, of course, for the dates of the births of John (June 24) and Jesus (December 25). Is this “liturgical trivia?” Perhaps. But it’s also the best explanation we have for the dating of some of the most important festivals on our calendar. So even though the Roman Church doesn’t observe the Conception of John the Baptist, yesterday’s equinox can remind us of how our salvation history is closely attuned to God’s creation.

EYE ON THE PRIZE Today’s second reading is part of a letter from James the Apostle to a community of Christians who are living in conflict. James offers advice and counsel by contrasting human wisdom and heavenly wisdom. Human wisdom is limited and intertwined with our tendency to sinfulness; hence we fall into strife, jealousy, immorality, and worse, all resulting from our self-centered desires. Heavenly wisdom, on the other hand, originates with God, so it is pure, peaceable, merciful, and expressed in good deeds. Following heavenly wisdom can lead to the perfect happiness God desires for all of us. None of us—even Jesus’ own disciples—are immune to the temptations of this world, such as status, wealth, and power. In today’s Gospel, Jesus urgently tells them about his impending suffering and death; yet they ignore him and continue squabbling about who is the greatest among them! We are sometimes like the disciples and the early Christians James is writing to when we indulge in behavior that contradicts who we say we are. When we reproach the pastor, complain about the parish staff or ministries, bicker and gossip, or withhold money or service from our parish, we harm the community of faith. Yet every person in a parish who freely gives their time to a ministry, who regularly prays for fellow parishioners, who brings help and comfort in times of need, who welcomes the poor and forgotten, and who gives generously to the offertory collection, is responding to heavenly wisdom. It is these continuing and cumulative acts of generosity and goodness that build up faith and strengthen the community. To follow Christ is hard work, requiring commitment, perseverance, and courage. Success in the Christian life is achieved by becoming not the greatest, but the servant of all. The prize is life eternal.

¡Y muchas, gracias a Dios!
