12:50pm - 28 July 2014 Coming into Lambert’s Bay on the R364. ‘Welcome to a ‘Blooming Marvelous’ Bay’!

Lambert’s Bay lies approximately 240km’s from Cape Town, following the R27 Coastal Road, a very scenic coastal flower route to take. A coastal town with unique West Coast charm. Lambert’s Bay’s soils are mostly those of Sandveld and Strandveld character. Keep an eye out for the unique ‘Rotstert’! At present it is still early days for flowers here in Lambert’s Bay, but very good ‘flower’ weather over the last few months, gives promise of an exceptional bloom for the season ahead! Periods of good rains followed by lots of sunshine in between will have given the seedlings all the sun and rain needed to flourish and although at the moment we are still expected to have a few more weeks of this weather, we expect the flowers to come into full bloom by middle August and, weather permitting will continue well into September. Our weather forecast for this week looks very promising, clear skies and sunny days, but cloud coming over again over the weekend although temperatures remain moderately high. At the moment the following plants are in bloom and looking quite fabulous!  Trachyandra Falcata (Namakwa Kool)  Veltheimia Capensis (Sandlelie)  Lachenalia Rubida (Sand Viooltjie)  Gethuyllis Afra (Kukumakranka)  Ferraria Densepunctulata (Grys Uiltjie)  The Babiana Ringens (Rotstert)  Lapeirousia Jacquinii (Blou Koringblom)  Gladiolus Gracilis (Blou Pypie)  Limeum Africanum (Koggelmandervoet)  Montinia Caryophyllacea (Peperbos)  Melianthus Elongatus (Truitjie)  Oxalis pes-caprae (Suring)  Oxalis compressa (Baster Suring)  Pelargonium (Rooi Malva)  Solanum Linnaeanum (Gifappel)  Salvia Africana-Lutea (Strand Salie) Elandbaai  Salvia Lanceolata (Rooi Salie)  Manulea Altissima (Witkoppie)  Lyperia Triste (Traanblommetjie)  Arctopus Echinatus (Platannadoring)  Oncosiphon Glabratum (Wildekamille) Lambert’s Bay has a large amount of Oxalis at present. The Lyperia Triste (Traanblommetjie) has shown it’s lovely face and bear in mind this flower can be viewed in any weather and even at night, so why not do a unique ‘Night Flower’ search! What a picture that would be?

5

Although a lot of this tremendous scenery is visible from roadside, more unique flower types will require you to walk deeper into the landscape and sometimes it will require expert guides to take you to specific locations where certain flowers bloom. Lambert’s Bay Tourism would like to thank, Arend & Cornel De Waal Arend De Waal Flower Tours 0833541788 (Available Weekends Only) Kosmoshuise Accommodation 0837315859 Lambert’s Bay’s Tourism Office is hosting a ‘Flower-Power’ Competition throughout the season! Snap a fabulous ‘Flower Power’ picture and send it to us to stand a chance to win a weekend in our beautiful town! Including accommodation, meals and sightseeing! Join us and find out more on our Facebook page (Lambert’s Bay Tourism)!

NAMAQUA NATIONAL PARK

Hi all Rainfall, Skilpad section, Namaqua National Park: March 2014: 14.98mm April 2014: 7.61mm May 2014: 16.26mm June 2014: 86.86mm July 2014: 52.82mm August 2014: 10.66mm (to date) The rains at Skilpad was a bit later than previous years, with the first good rains at the beginning of June. Since then we have had excellent, regular rainfall. Hopefully the season will last a bit longer with the later rains. We have had a few nice days after the recent rains, and the flowers are quite spectacular. Skilpad is covered in Namaqua daisy carpets, with sprinklings of yellow Oxalis and Pietsnot inbetween. The areas between Skilpad and Soebatsfontein and towards Wildeperdehoek pass has large purple ‘vygie’ carpets, as well as very good white daisy patches. The coastal flowers are also now very good with the usual variety of vygies and daisies. Please note that the coast is only accessible for 4x4 vehicles- if you have a suitable vehicle, then the parks’ coastline between Groen river and Spoeg river is very rewarding. There are now basically good flowers all over Namaqua. The best is to ask around when you are in the area to find out where the best spots are. Please note that I can only speak with authority on the park itself and close surrounds with regard to where the flowers are. Skilpad is accessible with a normal sedan vehicle but a high ground clearance vehicle is needed for the remainder of the park. The road to Skilpad from Kamieskroon is currently being graded.
