In this exercise we will use the “Fore groun d S e le ct” shown in the Toolbox on the left. When you select this tool, the mouse pointer goes with the lasso icon. It actually works like the Fuzzy Select tool. Select as little as possible from the background as shown in step (3). When you return to the start the rough selection remains the same but the background turns a dark blue. Move your cursor to the to the centre of the flower (which has now auto selected the paintbrush) hold the mouse button down and paint part of the flower. Move to the centre and paint any colour change. When you release the mouse button, Gimp auto selects the flower. Press enter to complete the selection.

Load your image then click [Layer] on your menu bar. Now click [Duplicate Layer]

Go to the menu bar and click [Colors] in the colors dialog click [Desaturate]

Move to the [Toolbox] and select the [Foreground Select Tool]

When selection is completed, the cursor Auto changes to the Paint Brush. Colour is not important but the default is black. Paint on the flower and cover any colour change on the flower.

Once you lift off the mouse button Gimp makes a selection. You now need to press [Enter]to complete the selection.

Leave it on the default, [Lightness] then click [OK]

Return to the [Toolbox] and Click [Gradient] tool.

Click the corner of the Gradient and choose the colour gradient you want

Return to your image and drag the cursor across the selection

Turn the [Opacity] down to 40%

Go to [Filters], click [Artistic] Then click [Cartoon].

Click the bottom layer to make it the selected layer to work on.

The default settings should be OK. Click [OK]

Now click the top layer, which makes it the work layer.

Go to the [Menu] bar and click [Select] then click [None].

Return to the [Menu] bar and Click [Layer] then click [Merge Down]
