About The Western Wind Vocal Ensemble The Western Wind, based in New York City, was founded in 1969. Initially, the mixed-voice sextet sang madrigals and other Early Music. Soon, the group expanded its repertoire to include vocal jazz, world folk music, avant garde works, chamber opera and, most notably, Jewish liturgical music, music they share on tour, in master classes and on numerous recordings. The Western Wind is perhaps best known for its nine recordings of Jewish music made jointly with narrators Leonard Nimoy and Theodore Bikel and famous cantors such as Alberto Mizrahi and Jack Mendelssohn. These include Taste of Eternity: A Musical Shabbat, The Birthday of the World, Music and Traditions of the High Holy Days and Channukah: In Story and Song. We Are Still Here – Mir Zaynen Do is the group’s latest addition to its Judaic recordings. The narrated version of We Are Still Here presented tonight at Eckerd College was recently recorded for Public Radio International with different narrators. During their two-day residency at Eckerd College, The Western Wind’s singers have coached our vocal ensembles and interacted with students studying the Holocaust. Their expertise as coaches and teachers is carried regularly into public schools in New York City and elsewhere in the Northeast, but also into a cappella singing workshops held in the summer at Smith College and at various locations during the rest of the year. For more information about the ensemble and its touring schedule, recordings and workshops, please visit westernwind.org online.
