WINTER 2014

CALL: (732) 381-7511 VISIT: www.agnj.org

Registration begins November 18th for Winter Classes & Workshops

HISTORY From 1869 to 1941, the Old Library was operated by the Rahway Library Association, formed and run primarily by women of the City of Rahway. In 1967, the library moved into a much needed larger site at the corner of St. Georges Avenue and Central Avenue.

Arts Guild New Jersey is a non-profit multi-disciplinary arts center located in the downtown Arts District in the City of Rahway. Our mission is to provide quality arts programs for the benefit of the Northern and Central New Jersey area. Each year the Guild presents: a fine art exhibition series; multi-week art class sessions in the winter, spring and fall for adults and children; an on-going series of adult art workshops; summer art workshops for kids and teens; a monthly artist networking night; and a variety of other cultural events and activities. We are accessible from the Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike, Routes 1 & 9, Saint Georges Avenue, and NJ Transit via the Northeast Corridor and Jersey Shore lines.

EDUCATION Art education has been our focus since 2000. Each year we offer a series of studio art classes in winter, spring and fall, which are geared for adults, teens and children at all levels of experience. The classes, taught by qualified instructors, many with advanced degrees, are designed to serve beginning and intermediate or advanced students. In addition to our multi-week classes, we offer a series of one-day art workshops for adults where artists can learn new techniques to enhance their art making and to create original artworks. Arts Guild New Jersey connects to our community -- through the Pre-K Art Education Initiative. Since winter 2007, the Guild has been providing art instruction for nearly 140 Pre-K (4-and-5 year-old) students in the four elementary schools of the Rahway Public School District. This program addresses an important aspect of our mission -- to encourage life-long learning in the arts. Our Pre-K program aims to introduce young children to the processes of art making to develop a beginning vocabulary of art terms and to allow them to make unique, personal choices in the practice of their creativity and the production of artworks.

Although no longer functioning as a library, the building continued to be of service to the town. It was renamed the Claude H. Reed Cultural and Recreational Center and became the headquarters of the Rahway Recreational Department. It was also the meeting place for many of the city’s sports teams and cultural groups. The Recreational Department offered numerous art, craft and recreational programs in the building which continued to attract people to use the site. During the spring of 1998, the Recreation Department moved to temporary headquarters and that fall commenced programming in the new Recreation Center behind City Hall on Milton Avenue. At that time, Arts Guild New Jersey began to renovate the Old Library and within a few months succeeded in rebuilding the front section of the structure into a beautiful 1,200 sq. ft. art gallery and space for intimate musical performances. The work to the building is an on-going process: the Arts Guild, in cooperation with the City of Rahway, has completed a number of further renovation projects since early 1999 and completed major repairs and upgrades in fall 2002.

MEMBERSHIP Arts Guild New Jersey is a non-profit organization that receives yearly support from many foundations, corporations and government units. ART EXHIBITS Each year we produce a series of fine art exhibitions primarily featuring the talented emerging artists of New Jersey. Our monthly exhibits include a wide range of styles, mediums and genres--painting, sculpture, photography, original prints, drawing, mixed media, collage, digital art and video. Our support of New Jersey artists is unparalleled among other museums and art centers of our state. The art we have found and present here is every bit as innovative, dynamic and well crafted as any that can be found either in our state or nearby New York. It is our aim to provide both an overview of exciting contemporary art by New Jersey artists as a superb and much needed venue, and an opportunity for the creation of new works to be presented to a multi-county regional audience.

FILM/VIDEO PROGRAM Periodically, Arts Guild New Jersey will offer art films and videos. For more information, call us at (732) 381-7511.

Dear Students: We're pleased to announce that we are expanding our education program to offer you more choices for daytime and evening classes and workshops. We're able to do this with the renovation of new studio classroom space in a city-owned building on the corner of Esterbrook and Milton Avenues in Rahway, just a few blocks from the train station. This building is also used as the City's Senior Center Annex. The annex boasts three well-lit and spacious studio classrooms, a convenient parking lot, and air-conditioning. Some Arts Guild New Jersey classes are now held in the renovated annex space, while others will remain on the mezzanine level of our Irving Street building. We're confident that the annex will offer a similarly charming and professional atmosphere in which to study fine art with our top-notch instructors. Class locations will be clearly noted in all of our class catalogs, class fliers, and on our website. Please look at the bottom of each class description for the address, either: 1670 IRVING STREET or SENIOR CENTER ANNEX, 125 WEST MILTON AVENUE We look forward to seeing you soon at Arts Guild New Jersey. CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS FOR ART TEACHERS! As of January 2009 the NJ State Board of Education no longer approves or certifies arts organizations or museums for providing art teachers with credits towards continuing education requirements. The choice is up to you to choose whatever place you go for your credits and to determine whether their level of instruction meets your needs. Arts Guild New Jersey has provided art education for adults and children since 2000. Throughout much of the year we provide multi-week classes and one-day art workshops at a high level of instruction. Our workshops, scheduled for weekend days provide many artist-taught opportunities for art teachers to learn new techniques, which may be adapted to classroom projects or just satisfy your interest in learning more about an area of art that interests you. Arts Guild New Jersey provides New Jersey art teachers with a certificate attesting to participation in workshops or classes, a description of the program or material covered and the number of continuing education credits you may claim toward your requirements.

Students are responsible for their own tools and materials for all Adult Classes.
