12 pm, Thursday 19 July First World War Galleries One of the strangest stories from the Memorial’s collection is that of the bell of the German light cruiser SMS Emden. Join curator Di Rutherford as she explores the amazing story behind the mysterious case of the Emden bell.

“Roses are red, violets are blue, flowers say more than ‘I love you’.” During the First World War, Australian soldiers sent thousands of embroidered silk postcards to their loved ones at home. Join a member of the Research Centre to learn about the symbolism of the flowers stitched into these small but beautiful works of art.

12 pm, Wednesday 8 August Second World War Galleries

Mutual respect and the forging of solid relationships between Allied troops and the local Borneans were crucial to the operation’s success.

The French countryside will be brought to life through virtual reality at the Australian War Memorial in order to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Hamel on 4 July 2018. Audiences will experience this key action in a 10-minute interactive digital experience, viewed via a VR headset and headphones in the Memorial’s BAE Systems Theatre. Audiences will hear how General Sir John Monash meticulously planned the battle before viewing the action from the perspective of an airman, infantry, or tank crewman, fully immersed in the countryside battlefield at Le Hamel in 1918, surrounded by tanks and aircraft.

During 1942 and early 1943, Australia took part in a bloody campaign on the island of Guadalcanal. While this contribution is often overshadowed by the fighting on the Kokoda Trail, many Australians played key roles in the Guadalcanal campaign to prevent Japan from gaining control over supply and communication routes between Australia and the United States. Join a curator from the Military Heraldry and Technology team to learn about Australia’s role in this Allied victory.
