Prior to this season, Wisconsin was last ranked in a national poll during the 2002 season, checking in at No. 25 in the USA Today/NFCA rankings on March 21. The Badgers’ highest ranking came in the 2001 season when they were ranked No. 21 three times. THE BIG TEN’S BEST For the first time in program history, five different Badgers earned Big Ten weekly honors. Meghan McIntosh became the most recent honoree after pitching her second no-hitter of the season on April 7 against Minnesota. McIntosh went the distance, throwing all six innings, striking out eight and walking five. Cassandra Darrah picked up her second pitcher of the week honor on March 25 after pitching two complete games and earning two wins at Illinois March 22-23. Darrah was also named pitcher of the week on Feb. 11 after pitching a career-high 11 innings in UW’s 6-5 win over Notre Dame, tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts. Michelle Mueller and McIntosh picked up a pair of Big Ten weekly honors following the Saluki Invitational March 9-10. Mueller was named player of the week following an eight hit, seven RBI weekend where she batted .615. McIntosh picked up pitcher of the week honors after recording a pair of wins, including a shutout and no-hitter. Mary Massei and Taylor-Paige Stewart both earned Big Ten weekly honors following their performances at the Diamond 9 Tournament, Feb. 22-24. Massei finished the weekend with a .571 batting average, driving in nine runs and scoring seven. Stewart posted a win and a save in the circle against Boston and Georgia Southern, respectively, posting a spotless ERA. UNTOUCHABLE Meghan McIntosh threw her second no-hitter of the season on April 7 against Minnesota, becoming the second Badger to throw two no-hitters in the same season. McIntosh threw her first career no-hitter on March 10 against Eastern Kentucky, while Cassandra Darrah accomplished the feat on Feb. 22 against Georgia Southern to mark the first UW no-hitter in 12 seasons. It is the first time in school history that the Badgers recorded three no-hitters in the same season and the first time that two different pitchers achieved the feat. NEUTRAL SITE RECORD With its 9-0 win over Eastern Michigan on March 16, UW recorded its 19th neutral site win of the season, setting a school record for most neutral site wins in a season. The previous record of 18 was set in 2001. The Badgers finished the season 24-3 at neutral sites after posting a 2-1 neutral site record at the NCAA regionals. MASSEY SETS DOUBLES RECORD Whitney Massey hit six doubles at the Diamond 9 Tournament Feb. 22-24, breaking UW’s career doubles record with a two-bagger on Saturday, Feb. 23, against Boston University. Massey finished her career with 51 doubles, besting the previous record of 36 set by Julie Borchard in 1999. BLACKSHEAR REACHES 100 RBI MARK A bunt single against Charlotte on Feb. 8 marked Shannel Blackshear’s 100th career RBI. The senior added a pair at the Saluki Invitational March 9-10 to tie the UW school record of 114 set by Julie Borchard. Blackshear recorded five at the Louisville Classic to take ownership of the mark with 119 career RBI. The senior finished her career with 137. MASSEI STREAKING Mary Massei recorded a hit in the first 11 games of the season, tying a career-best hitting streak. Massei’s hitting streak ended against Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 28, but her on base streak continued until March 3, reaching 16 games. BADGERS DEFEAT CARDINAL UW’s 4-0 win over No. 16 Stanford on March 1 marked the program’s first win over a ranked opponent since the 2005 season when it defeated No. 19 Iowa. The win was also the first ever over the Cardinal. BADGERS TAKE DOWN IRISH UW posted two wins over Notre Dame at the First Pitch Classic and both wins came courtesy of the long ball. Michelle Mueller’s home run and Cassandra Darrah’s strong performance in the circle led the Badgers to a 1-0 win over Notre Dame on Feb. 9 and it was three, two-run homers on Feb. 10 that led UW to a thrilling 11 inning win. MASSEI PRODUCTIVE AT THE PLATE Mary Massei crossed home plate five times in the Badgers’ 12-3 win over Charlotte on Feb. 8. Massei used four hits and one walk to score a school-record five runs.
HEAD COACH YVETTE HEALY Yvette Healy concluded her third season as head coach at Wisconsin in 2013 with a program-best 44 wins, including 16 Big Ten victories, the most ever at UW. It was the Badgers’ third-consecutive 30-win season under Healy, marking the first time ever that UW recorded three straight 30-win seasons. UW capped of its best conference season ever with a its first Big Ten tournament title, defeating Northwestern, No. 6 Michigan and Minnesota during its title run. For the first time since 2005, Wisconsin qualified for the NCAA regional where it advanced to its first ever regional title game. The Badgers broke over 30 single-season records, including the school record for runs (283), hits (458) and RBI (247). Mary Massei set new marks in seven individual categories, including batting average (.421), hits (82) and runs (51). Starting with a win against CSUBakersfield on March 2 and ending with a loss to Iowa on March 29, Wisconsin won a school-record 13-straight games, besting a previous mark of 11 set earlier in the season. For the first time in program history, UW’s pitchers recorded three no-hitters, including a pair of no-no’s by Meghan McIntosh. Wisconsin was awarded Big Ten weekly honors five times and saw five athletes earn All-Big Ten honors. Whitney Massey, Cassandra Darrah and Mary Massei were named to Great Lakes All-Region teams. Healy marked her 100th win at Wisconsin with a 12-1 victory over Indiana on April 27, 2013. In her first two seasons at Wisconsin, Healy led the Badgers to 30 wins each season, including tying the program record with 34 victories in 2012. In her tenure, Healy has had 12 athletes named to All-Big Ten teams, five named all-region and eight earn Academic All-Big Ten honors. On July 24, 2010, Healy became the third coach in UW history. The 2007 Horizon League Coach of the Year, Healy guided the Loyola (Ill.) Ramblers to a top-four conference finish in every season she was at the helm. She coached four NFCA All-Mideast Region players, and the team set the single-season school record for batting average (.292) in 2010. Healy’s team also set single-season Loyola records for stolen bases (116) and home runs (37) in 2009. Healy earned her bachelor’s degree in communication from DePaul in 1999 and her master’s in secondary education and English from DePaul in 2007.
