Project Overview

This is a multi-million pound project to extend and improve facilities at Woodford Leisure Centre, one of the city council’s largest leisure centres, located on Holderness Road. Hobson & Porter, as the main building contractor, is creating a new front elevation to the building and an extension to house a new reception area, a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool and a 10-metre beginners’ pool. The project also includes new sauna and steam facilities, improved changing rooms, a new café and an improved, landscaped car-park. In the early part of 2017, the scope of works was extended to include replacing the roof of the existing building. The total duration of the project is approximately 18 months, from Hobson & Porter’s early engagement with Hull City Council in October 2016 to the handover, scheduled for April 2018. The centre will be closed during this time due to the extensive and disruptive nature of the works.

Happy new year from the site team at Woodford Leisure Centre. There has been a lot of visible progress in recent weeks: New building The bases of the two new swimming pools have now been tiled, and work is underway to tile the surrounds. Tiling of the changing room walls is now complete and the floors are approximately 50% of the way there. The plant room for the main swimming pool is currently being fitted out. Existing building All re-roofing work is complete, including the glass atrium over the pool hall. To the interior of the building, the existing changing rooms are being tiled to make way for the fixtures and fittings. Externally 90% of scaffolding has now been taken down and cladding of the new building was completed by Christmas. Work on the car park is also in progress and the site cabins are being moved to enable this to be completed.

To make the site as secure as possible during construction, a guard is on patrol throughout every night of the week, and CCTV is also in place at strategic points around the site. Despite this, damage is still being done – for example to the perimeter fencing. This is obviously a concern from a project point of view as it costs time and money to make repairs. We are also concerned that those responsible for causing the damage will also compromise their own safety, and urge them to stay well clear of the site.
