Worksheet: Applications of Total Internal Reflection Purpose: To understand different applications of total internal reflection. Procedure: 1) Read pg. 527 – 530 2) Complete the For Your Notes sections: For Your Notes: Using full sentences and well labelled diagrams, answer/complete the following questions to help you understand some common uses of total internal reflection(T.I.R.): 1) What is the critical angle for diamonds? What is the relationship between the critical angle and the refractive index. 2) Explain why a diamond exhibits a “sparkling” effect when light enters (in terms of T.I.R.). 3) Draw a diagram of light entering a diamond. Label where light is refracted and where it undergoes T.I.R.. 4) What size of critical angle must mediums have in order to be used as fibre optic cables? What are some examples of these types of medium? 5) How are fibre optics used in: i) the movie industry; ii) the automotive industry; iii) the medical industry? 6) What is the critical angle for a glass prism? 7) Which are more effective at transmitting light: mirrors or prisms? Explain. 8) Draw the two different orientations of a prism. Include angles, direction, and where T.I.R. occurs. 9) What are two different applications of prisms? 10) What is a retro-reflector? 11) Explain what a LR3 is and what it is used for. 12) How are retro-reflectors used as safety equipment?
