World History Pre‐AP Summer Assignment The World history P‐AP summer assignment serves several purposes. The first is to introduce students to a historical topic and begin the mental transition from geography to history. The second is to assess each student’s ability to conduct research and reach a conclusion. The final and, perhaps most important purpose, is to prepare students for the level of reading and writing that will be required on a regular basis in the pre‐AP course. For this assignment you are expected to read a historical fiction novel and use the directions and questions below to assess the historical accuracy of the story. You will write a 2‐3 page paper which addresses each of the major points listed below, and includes a bibliography citing the sources used in your research. The paper should include the following three parts: Summary
Description of the novel’s plot and the major historical events, people, etc. within the novel
Research
Research and summarize the actual historical time period or event using at least three sources (Wikipedia does not count)
Analysis
Based on your research, how historically accurate is the novel? What are some parts of the novel that were inaccurate? Why did the author leave out or change these parts of the novel ? What bias does the author bring to the historical event? Which side or viewpoint of the story is included and which is left out?
You will choose one book from the attached list. Many of the titles are available at the public library, as well as in e‐ book form from the Northside Electronic Library and San Antonio Public Library system. This assignment will be due on Tuesday, August 27. If you have any questions about the assignment or the course in general feel free to contact either Ms. Gray (
