Introduction World optometry Day (WOD) this year was celebrated with multiple events either supported by OCI or done through Optometry colleges on their own. OCI distributed posters to its registered members and to optometry colleges. The poster carried a message of optometrist contributing towards nation’s eye health. OCI also has planned various school screenings during the month of April and May 2018 as part of WOD celebration. The report of all screenings shall be sent once completed. OCI also accredited various educational CME that were conducted as part of WOD celebrations. They have been listed below. Apart from all the above, various educational events, CME, cultural events, awareness events have been conducted by optometry schools and individuals. This report has summarized all the various activities together. As OCI we request you to send us feedback regards the report to [email protected]

AWARNESS CAMPAIGN The awareness campaign through poster was supported by Cooper Vision and Essilor India Pvt Ltd. The poster’s were distributed to more than 200 registered members of OCI all over India and were displayed in there clinics and practices. GKB Opticals and Lawrence & Mayo printed the posters and displayed them in their stores.

Optometry Institutes all over India organized Continuing Education Programs and other activities to celebrate WOD, this year. OCI ACCREDITED CME’s HARIJYOT COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY – NAVSARI, GUJARAT World Optometry Day –was celebrated in a grand way in the presence of dignitaries, 7 most experienced speakers from different colleges and private practitioners, practicing since many years. Delegation of 300 were registered which included optometry students and practitioners. The event was organized by Harijyot College of Optometry, Rotary Eye Institute, Navsari, Gujarat.The celebration was more of an educational session, a confluence of an academic discourse and a practical depiction on Perfect Practice towards Optical Dispensing making audience feel the importance of it in optometry. Highlights of the session were: Live demonstration, Innovation and learning and Model competition. The function started with prayer and welcome dance. In charge/principal, Optom. Nirav N Mehta welcomed all the guests and students and invited dignitaries for formal opening of the event. After lightening the lamp ceremony all speakers were felicitated by Shri.Ranjitbhai Patel and Shri.MahendrabhaiVaidya. During this event extraordinary talks were given by Optom. Srikanth Maseedupalli on ‘Art and Prescribing Glasses’, Optom. Usman Memon talked on ‘Face Measurement’ and how to deal with it. Optom .Gauri Kunjeer Patel discussed on ‘Soft skills’, Optom. Rushit Patel gave talk on most interesting aspect called ‘SERVICE in Dispensing’. Optom. Hardik Patel helped all students and faculties to understand the process on ‘Frame Alignment’, Optom Nirav Mehta explained how ‘Sunglasses can be prescribed to everyone and Optom. Ankit Varshney talked on ‚Basic insights on dispensing, its calculation and importance‛. All students and alumni were able to brush up the things which they learnt and also got to know new updates and knowledge. During this event live face measurements were demonstrated, role play on customer/client and dances were also

presented. Essilor also gave a talk on Vision Office 2 as newer updates during this conference. Around 10 models were presented on theme of optical dispensing from different colleges. The Chairman of Harijyot College of Optometry, Shri Yogesh Naik announced the best five models and Essilor awarded them with certificates and prize kits. The event was supported by Biomedix, Mehra Eyetech, Essilor, and OCI accredited the event with 05 credits.

SRI RAMACHANDRA MEDICAL COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE PORUR, CHENNAI To mark the occasion of World Optometry Day 2018, Department of Optometry, Sri Ramachandra MEDICAL COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE celebrated it as a two day event “ESPERANZA – Infinite hope’ with mix of knowledge and fun The first day was a grand CME, under the theme “Collaborative approach to understanding children with special needs”. The experts from various fields were invited to shed light on how to handle these kids. The speakers covered on the broad areas such as i.

Mr. Aditya Goyal, behavioral and developmental optometrist introduced us to the basic binocular vision testing and gave us idea about the spectrum of tests performed to asses these kids and the vision therapy given to improve the visual functions.

Overall, we had 300 young optometry students attending the CME from 09 optometry colleges across South India. Members from Optometric Association of Tamil Nanbargal (OATN) and other independent practitioners also graced the CME with their presence, personal experiences and thought provoking questions. Second day of the event started with a workshop on ocular prosthesis making. Mr. Diwakar, renowned ocularist in India, shared his knowledge with the students in artificial eye making followed by, the most awaited fun moment. 10 colleges participated in various events organized.

HORIZON 3 – Bejan Singh College of Optometry, Nagercoil On the occasion of World Optometry Day -2018 , an exclusive and interesting CME was held at Y. R. Mahal on 8th April, 2018 on BASICS OF OPTOMETRY. Eminent speakers from different parts of India had taken part in the conference. Dr.Tanuja Britto spoke on the topic ‘psychological aspects on low vision‛. Dr. Krishna Kumar also spoke on the topic ‚Fall and Vision loss among elderly‛ which helped to create awareness among the upcoming optometrist. Another interesting topic ‚Portfolio of refraction and lore of special subjective tests‛ by Mrs. Jasmin PC gave enlighting knowledge to the students. Mr. Mohammed Kunhi spoke on ‚Contextualizing retinoscopy in the practice of refraction‛. Ms. Paula Mukherjee spoke on ‚Know your patients‛. Mr. Diwakar Rao spoke on the ‚Advantage of new theories in neuroscience and amblyopia therapy‛ which opened a new way of knowledge to the students. Mr. Japin Charan was our seventh guest speaker who spoke on ‚Frame to face compatibility while dispensing‛. Mr. Swastik, a consultant of Rose K Contact lens spoke on the topic of ‚Rose K Lenses on irregular cornea‛. About 17 different colleges participated in the CME across South India, and 730 students registered for the conference. A Quiz was conducted, in which 10 groups from different colleges took part, among them four groups were selected to the final round. First prize was won by Sankara College of optometry. Second and third prizes were won by Malabar College Calicut and Nethradhama College, Bangalore. An exhibition was held at our hospital premises on the basic topics of optometry which was attended by all students and faculties. The program was accredited by OCI for 03 credits.

NON-ACCREDITED CME’s DEPARTMENT OF OPTOMETRY - UNIVERSITY OF HYDERABAD On 23rd March 2018, University of Hyderabad (UoH), School of Medical Sciences (SMSc.) celebrated World Optometry Day. On this occasion, SMSc. organized a Blindfold Walk, Vision Screening program, half a-day Scientific Program, Interschool quiz & Debate competitions at DST auditorium, University of Hyderabad. Prof. Geeta K Vemuganti addressed the gathering and said that the blindfold walk will help the visually able person to experience how other senses of a visually impaired person aid them to sense their surroundings. The walk commenced from the school of life sciences to south shopcom and return to the start point. Close to 80 students walked over a kilometer and experienced the difficulties faced by visually impaired persons and shared their experiences. Students from Public Health, Life Sciences and other streams participated in the walk and shared their experiences. A vision screening program for the University fraternity was organized at the School of Medical Sciences, Eye clinic. A total of 85 patients were examined and 32 patients were referred to UOH’s eye Clinic for further management. A scientific session on ‚Current perspectives & updates of Optometry‛ was also organized. Faculty, students and interns from Bausch & Lomb School of Optometry, L V Prasad Eye Institute, Centre of Sight, Pushpagiri Vitreo Retina Institute and Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital participated in the program. Prof. Geeta K Vemuganti addressed the gathering with a brief introduction on optometry course developments in the University. Dr.Motilal Naik, Joint Director, National Program for Control of Blindness (NPCB), Telangana, delivered a talk on NPCB activities, impact of eye screening programs in the state of Telangana and its initiatives.

Dr.Naik updated the participants on government plans in reducing the prevalence of blindness from 1.4 to 0.3% by the year 2024 by means of disease control including cataract surgeries, refractive error correction, spectacle distribution, and early detection of other diseases. Prof. B R Shamanna from University of Hyderabad moderated the session. The Panel agreed on the need for evidence based practice in optometry teaching, importance of working with industry and preparing the human resource for country’s need, eye care personal to work in cohesion and become the integral part of the system and expand the scope of optometry practice to the next level by incorporating diagnostics, specialties such as low vision, contact lenses and vision therapy etc. Ms Lakshmi Shinde, CEO, Optometry Council of India (OCI) gave updates on current works of OCI for the optometry profession. Prof.Geeta K Vemuganti presented a token of gratitude to the panel. A debate on Current perspectives on online vs. offline business in eye care was held between Dr. Kuldeep Raizada, Director International Prosthetic Eye Centre, Mr Y Vijay Kumar, Registrar, Bausch and Lomb school of optometry, L V Prasad Eye Institute, Mr Sunny Mannava, Program Officer India, Operation Eyesight Universal, MR. Saif Ahmed, Regional Training Manager, Lenskart Company. Dr. Pramod Kumar Mishra, from the School of Management Studies, University of Hyderabad has moderated the session. During the debate the members spoke about the current offline sales in eye care and how the online sales working In India, cost management, anecdotes about the lens selection in online sales, way of frame selection in online sales, and dispatching.

A total of 5 teams from School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Bausch &Lomb School of optometry, L V Prasad Eye Institute and interns from Center for Sight participated in Inter-school quiz competition. Dr. P S Roopa Reddy, Ms.Deepom John, from University of Hyderabad have moderated the competition. The students from Bausch and Lomb School of optometry won the 1st prize . UOH students secured the runners position. An open debate on student’s performance, attendance and exams was conducted & moderated by Mr Vijay Kiran, and, Mr Y Vijay Kumar. Students from different schools proactively participated in the debate and shared their views and opinions. Finally, Dr. Nagaraju Konda concluded the program by giving vote of thanks.

SUSRUTA SCHOOL OF OPTOMETRY AND VISUAL SCIENCES This year, optometry students and faculties of Kochi, Kerala organized an event AYNA 2k18, a consortium of Optometry colleges in Ernakulum District affiliated to Kerala University Of Health Sciences , to celebrate the World Optometry Day . Three colleges involved in the event were Susruta School of Optometry and Visual Sciences (SS)), Kochi, Medical Trust Institute of Medical Sciences (MTIMS), Kochi and Little Flower Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (LIMSAR), Angamally. More than 250 students participated. It was a one day program inaugurated by the Chief Guest Honorable Vice Chancellor Of KUHS, Dr. M.K.C Nair. Ms Jasmine P Charan, Principal, SSO, Ms Shyja K.N , HOD, MTIMS and Mr Mathews G Vadath, HOD, LIMSAR were present for the inaugural function , on 23rd March 2018. Our Hon VC Dr. M K C Nair delivered a very important message about conquering the epidemic of preventable blindness in India by working at par with the Ophthalmology society He also highlighted the various 18 divisions of opportunities available to an optometrist as highlighted by WHO. He emphasized on the initiatives designed and implemented by KUHS and educators for the development of faculties and defining the educational standards for optometry and also other paramedical and allied health streams. The students of all the three colleges actively participated in the events. The event included a CME done by students where 3 students from each college presented a topic followed by a Quiz program and cultural events.

Laxmi College of Optometry- Mumbai On 22nd of March 2018, Laxmi College of Optometry took another step towards encouraging students in exploring their potentiality in an innovative manner with an intellectual yet fun-packed set of academic and extracurricular event Extempore: The theme of the Extempore was Awareness and knowledge about Optometry based on the following topics o ‚Role of an Optometrist in spreading awareness about optometry as a profession in the society‛ o ‚Medical ethics and law‛ o ‚Aid of an optometrist to various professions and occupations‛ The purpose of conducting this event was to instigate the students to use their knowledge and skills to convey their thoughts outright at a platform. Debates: The theme of the Debate was Students Perception about Technology and Health care based on the following topics o ‚Modern Technology: a boon and or bane for human eyes‛ o ‚Merits and demerits of screening camps in eye health‛ o ‚Hard copy reading versus softcopy reading‛ The purpose of conducting this event was to develop analytical line of thought within the students and to make them think out of the box. Clinical Video competitions and Clinical Image competitions were held To add some zest to the occasion, a round of sports events were conducted.

Desai Eye Hospital, Pune; celebrate at Hall B, College Campus Pune. There was Guest Lecture by eminent Speakers, Speech given by Senior Optometrist, Poetry on primary eye care & eye donation by junior students and other curricular activities.

NETHRADHAMA SCHOOL OF OPTOMETRY – BANGALORE On the most awaited day for the optometrist i.e., on ‚The World Optometry Day 2018‛ ,the students of ‚Nethradhama School Of Optometry‛ , along faculties celebrated this day with a great enthusiasm by organizing various inter college competitions. It was a great fun throughout the day where students made working models of the Eye Ball, the aqueous humor and the lacrimal apparatus along with their mechanism. Then a drawing competition was held on the topic ‚Eye and the Nature‛, which was followed by rangoli competition on the topic ‚One India - Great India‛. And the most interesting part was the Quiz competition which was of three rounds where questions were related to optometry, general knowledge, identify the logo, along with cross word and word search.

SITAPUR EYE HOSPITAL – UTTAR PRADES World Optometry Day ,23rd of March, 2018, was celebrated with great enthusiasm. All the students of the optometry department participated in various Optometry related activities, like, decoration based on optometry theme , working & non-working model competition , presentation by students , optometry profile based kawali , play based on importance of rehabilitation service for awareness and cultural programs .

The day started with an interesting ‚Interactive Quiz‛ on Pinnacles in Optometry conducted by the SRM Optometry team, which took the audience to the roots of optometry through time. Students from various colleges participated with enthusiasm and special prizes sponsored by Bausch & Lomb were given to the winners. See in Style by Optom. Prem Sudhakar L, Professional Services Manager, Lawrence and Mayo, provided us information on what it takes to get in the optical field and how to be a successful dispenser and management consultant. Explore Your Limits by Optom. Dr. Krishna Kumar R, Principal, Elite School of Optometry, threw light on higher education and opportunities available after under graduation. He also enlightened on Teaching Opportunities and Training, other Master Programs, Residency Programs, Fellowships for professional certification and Doctorate in India as well as Abroad. Working in Harmony by Dr. Nivean Madhivanan, Director of Academics of M.N Eye Hospital Pvt. Ltd threw light on the relationship between Optometrist and Ophthalmologist. Being an Ophthalmologist himself he talked about how optometrists make the job of ophthalmologists easier. And taught about ‚work in harmony‛ Yours Only by Optom. Kumaran R, Proprietor, Trinity Optics, presented a talk on what all it takes in establishing an independent Optometric practice. He talked about each and every thing required to open your own practice, from the most basic requirement till the advanced materials and skills.Glimpse of Glamour by Optom. Khem Raj, Professional Services Manager, Bausch & Lomb gave a glimpse of the corporate world, how it changes the life of an optometrist and what are the skills which one can develop through it and how can one adapt to a new life and live in style. As the morning session ended, the day moved on to the second part of the celebration: Cultural Fest, participants from various colleges involved in the events, which included: 1. Unga Nadana Kuzhu (Group Dance) 2. Channel Maathu da (Channel Surfing) 3. Konjam Nadinga Boss (Act it out) The first prize in Group Dance was bagged by students from MN college of Optometry and the runners up were students from Sri Ramachandra Medical College. Medical College students bagged the first place in both Channel Surfing and Act it Out also. Students also performed group and solo singing. The students of SRM Optometry Team put up a host performance which included skit, dances and singing, which was filled with joy and laughter.

Winners of the various inter college competitions

SANKARA COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY – LUDHIANA Chitkara University and Sankara Academy of Vision celebrated World Optometry day with various awareness activities. The day started with lighting of lamp and Saraswati Vandana followed by golden words on optometry by Dr. Preethi Pradhan. Essilor briefed the audience about need of regular and comprehensive eye examination. Professor Keerti Pradhan highlighted career opportunities in the field of optometry to young optometry students. Dr. Balvinder Acharya, a Yoga professor, Chandigarh, enlightened everybody by meditation techniques to improve vision. The quiz competition was also held for optometry students. The event further gathered audience attention by Walkathon with informative slogans, placard and banners. The students of optometry also passed messages and entertained people through skit, dance and song.

LOTUS COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY –MUMBAI Quiz competition was held in Lotus College of optometry on 23rd March 2018 on the occasion of World Optometry Day. 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students were divided into 6 teams that competed for 4 rounds. The rounds consisted of 1identify the instrument, crack the abbreviations, and diagnose the disease. It was a fun activity done to check as well as enhance the knowledge of optometry.

Glaucoma rally was done on 16th march 2018 in lotus eye hospital and Lotus College of optometry. It was done to spread awareness and educate common people on effect of glaucoma and importance of glaucoma screening.

Department of Optometry – Sanskriti University, Uttarpradesh This year Sanskriti University, Mathura, Uttarpradesh Optometry department students (School of Medical & Allied Science) celebrated a wonderful World Optometry Day 2018. They celebrated this day on 22nd March because of Saheed Diwas. Various educational & cultural events like essay writing competition (Topic: Importance of paramedical science in modern medical science), poster making competition (innovative mind), medical quiz, dance, optometry poem, motivational song, drama (proud to be an optometrist), power point presentation competition were presented by students. Our special attraction was guest lecture & workshop (Neuro optometry & vision therapy) by young rising optometrist Asst Prof Mr Mantu Akon. Another guest was senior optometrist Mr Sachin Ambre from Bhaktivedanta eye hospital (Iskon Society), Barsana, Uttarpradesh. The lecture was very informative. He demonstrated different therapies on our Divyang School CP Child.

ERA UNIVERSITY – LUCKNOW First time, WOD was celebrated in Era University. The day started with a rally for awareness on optometry , followed by presentation by Mrs. Ragini Kumari Asst. Prof. Optometry. Honorable VC of Era University also addressed optometry students and encouraged them for their bright future. All optometry students (including diploma & Bachelor students both) gathered together and prepared Rangoli and Drama on Refractive error

World Optometry Day -2018 was celebrated with great enthusiasm in different parts of the country. The main aim of the celebrations all over was to create awareness about the profession. Most of the colleges conducted educative sessions / CME’s along with different co-curricular activities like quiz competitions, drama, skit, model completions, singing and dancing. We look forward to a bigger participation from optometry fraternity all over India for the next World Optometry Day.
