MUSIC PRODUCTION GUIDE 04|2017

The first is Alan Broadbent. I met Alan when I was 17 and trying to figure out how to be a jazz piano player. He showed me so much about the music and about being a pianist. Valuable lessons, such as learning Lester Young’s solo choruses on “Lester Leaps In” by ear and be able to sing it before I tried to play it on the piano. The lesson learned from that exercise was to internalize the music, because if you internalize the music to that degree you’ll be able to play it on the instrument with much more conviction and fluidity. He showed me chord voicing and arranging concepts he’d gotten from Herb Pomeroy at Berklee, as well as things he’d learned from his studies with Lennie Tristano. He also got me thinking more like an arranger at the piano, particularly when accompanying singers. He was working a lot with vocalist Irene Kral at the time, and they had just recorded an incredible duo record called "Where is Love“. I spent a lot of time at their gigs absorbing all that I could. Alan also opened my mind to so much music beyond jazz. He’d say something like: "So you like Bill Evans, kid? Check this out...,“ and hand me Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de

using the most on MONTAGE? DW: I really like the touch screen user interface on MONTAGE. It’s just so nice to be able to quickly dig into a Performance or organize a Live Set in such a tactile way. It really speeds up the editing process for me. Live Sets were just a perfect way for me to organize all of the sounds and keep up with the constant revisions that occurred while putting the Barbra Streisand tour together. The ability to seamlessly switch between Performances on the fly without the sound dropping out is essential to what I do in that show, so I’m very happy that the MONTAGE does that well. As I said before, I’m really impressed by the overall sound of the instrument, which is very smooth and warm. I’ve used the Super Knob a bit, mostly for morphing a solo sound into an ensemble, or adding complexity to an Electric Piano and essentially things that are already programmed into the Performances. I can envision some ways I’d like to use the both Super Knob and Scenes to emulate complex wavetable synthesis. Like everything on the MONTAGE, you can jump right in and quickly adjust the basic parameters, or go as deep as you want. I have found that if you're at all familiar with any of the MOTIF or DX instruments, that knowledge really helps makes it easy to get under the hood of MONTAGE, especially via the touch screen. In terms of the sound architecture of MONTAGE, I dig the through-line that extends all the way back to FM synthesis, and forward into this incredible world of complex modulation via the SuperKnob. That is a great thing about MONTAGE.

Instead of Scenes representing finished song sections, you can act freely and fluently like as you would do in DJing. For example, you can start a mix by dragging all the Sliders to zero, and then fading in and out the individual Parts as desired. This dynamic process can either be recorded via MIDI or audio (external) to be recalled at a later time. If you'd like to try such growl sounds solo, simply use the Performances "Dance Growl 1" to "3" and musically modulate the Filter Frequency assigned to the Super Knob. To have both hands free for the keyboard, you should operate the Super Knob with an Expression Pedal (Yamaha FC7).

The Multi-Part Performance "Pink House SPLIT" is similar in structure, yet more up-to-date and more spherical. Instead of the guitar riffs you can hear rhythmic dance chords, which are created by the arpeggiator, of course. The Side Chain Compression of the synthpad is also used here.

The Single-Part Performances "Mega Poly", "Dance Punch Cool", and "Dance Power Full" clearly demonstrate that the Soundset also features very universal sounds, which even work when you're playing jazzier chords. Thus, with Library Import, complete Soundsets can be copied to the User Bank and subsequently stored as a new USER File and LIBRARY File. This makes sense if you want to combine several Libraries (Soundsets) into a new Library. The prerequisite is that the combined Libraries contain no more than 256 User Arpeggios in total and that the available Sample Memory is sufficient.

After successfully completing the Library Import, you can see in CategorySearch (Main = all, Sort = Default) that

• Live Organ and Organ Session = together 244 User Arpeggios

the Performances appear in the User Bank in their original order:

• Live Instruments and Nature of Chill = together 256 User Arpeggios It is also possible to combine several Libraries with User Arpeggios if the number of 256 is not exceeded. For example, a combination of "Xtasyn" (182 User Arpeggios) and "Phat Analog II" (48 User Arpeggios) would be possible. Other Libraries without User Arpeggios could be added, if desired. In this case, the maximum number of 640 Performances for a single User or Library File must

much content into a Library, since it can become quite confusing.

C O MB I N I NG S EV ER AL LI BRA R I ES Now that you understood the procedure of importing a complete Library, you can begin to merge several Libraries using the Library Import function. As mentioned above, however, you should first check whether the maximum number of User Arpeggios is not exceeded. All combined Libraries may not contain more than 256 User Arpeggios. Here is an overview of the current EASY SOUNDS Libraries and the number of User Arpeggios contained in them: • Phat Analog = 0 User Arpeggios • Phat Analog II= 48 User Arpeggios • Dance Pro= 256 User Arpeggios • Xtasyn= 182 User Arpeggios • Nature of Chill= 0 User Arpeggios

If you want to combine two of the Soundsets listed above, you only need to perform the Library Import for one of the two Soundsets, because with the EASY SOUNDS libraries the first File can be loaded directly as a User File. The steps for a combination of "Phat Analog" and "Phat Analog II" would thus look like this: • Load the User File PhatAnalog.X7U • Load the Library File PhatAnalogII.X7L • Perform the complete Library Import of "PhatAnalogII" using the steps described above After this procedure, which is executed in a few minutes, both Soundsets are stored together in the User Bank and can be saved as new User and Library Files.

• Live Instruments= 256 User Arpeggios • Live Organ= 244 User Arpeggios • Organ Session= 0 User Arpeggios For example, you could make these combinations, in which a Library with User Arpeggios is combined with a Library that contains no User Arpeggios: • Phat Analog and Phat Analog II = together 48 User Arpeggios

YAMAHA.COM

To this end, here's an important hint: In case of later changes, you should always keep the corresponding User File in addition to the Library Files. If you want to change Library Performances, you first have to load the identical User File, make the changes, and save the content as a User and Library File. Finally, the old Library is deleted and the modified Library is re-loaded into the MONTAGE.

13

MUSIC PRODUCTION GUIDE 04|2017

After the Library Import the Performances of "Phat Analog II" follow the Performances of Phat Analog in their original order. As with all EASY SOUNDS Libraries, the Multi Part Performances (blue) are stored ahead of the Single Part Performances (green). So if you want to get to the first Performance of Phat Analog II, you have to step through the Category Search Pages until the first Multi Part Performance of Phat Analog II (blue) appears. If you only want to select the Multi Part Performances (blue) of both Soundsets, select the "Multi" attribute in Category Search. When all the steps of this particular Library management have been completed, you should use the "Backup File" function (new from Firmware 1.50) to save all Libraries together in one file (UTILITY - Contents - Store / Save ContentType "Backup File"). I hope that the procedures described are helpful for your daily work with MONTAGE. Have fun and succeed with your Library management!

For some time now many users, however, expressed to get new content in the field of Performances and Live Mixings. Yamaha Europe now corresponds to this wish and provides new sound sets: Hybrid Live Performances for MOTIF XF and MOXF. The following Performance Sets are included in the downlad: HYBRID PERFOR MER - SET 1 32 Performances

The sets 2 and 3 on the other hand contain "Hybrid Live Performances", which are very popular among live keyboardists. Hybrid Live Performances are Mixings at the highest level and with the broadest capabilities. They contain not only complex layer or split programmings, but even allow to switch between sounds without interruption. Many ambitious and professional keyboardist prefer these special Live Performances over traditional Performances with their four different Parts. DTX- M U LT I 12 S O U N D S E T : „OR I E N T A L PER C U S S I O N “ The DTX Electronic Percussion Pad MULTI-12 uses many of the high-end features and sounds from the DTX and MOTIF series and provides an optimum tool for live drumming, productions or rehearsals. With over 1,200 high-class sounds - including newly-developed drum, percussion and keyboard sounds - the DTX-12 MULTI enriches any musical situation. Up to 200 User Sets can be programmed and added with effects to get ready for every conceivable musical style with the best sounds around. In addition, the large 64MB Flash-ROM Wave-Memory can be filled with additional samples which then can be assigned to the Pads. Now the soundset „Oriental Percussion“ for the DTX-MULTI 12 is available for registered users. It is provided by EASY SOUNDS on behalf of Yamaha Music Europe - free of charge. The download package includes the following: • 50 Patterns • 24 Kits • 132 User Waves (18 MB Samples) The soundset has been designed primarily for traditional and modern Turkish music. It‘s based on authentic samples of oriental percussion instruments. The oriental instruments are however well suited for use in other music styles such as Pop, World, Chill Out, Ambient, etc. „Oriental Percussion“ was programmed by the Turkish musician and producer Mert Topel. Since 1990 Mert Topel is working as a musician with nationally and internationally known pop and rock stars such as Tarkan (1993-2008) and many others. Mert recorded several albums as a producer of jazz, fusion, rock bands, and singers like Kirac, Mor ve Otesi, Gülden Goksen, Grizu etc. He also has his own jazz-rock band „Fenomen“, which published its first album in 2006 - with very good response from jazz lovers. Another project is a collaboration with Alper Maral in the production of an electro-acoustic-oriented album called „The Voltage Control Project“, which appeared in 2010. The DTX-12 MULTI Patterns produced by Mert Topel should inspire the musician in the first place and serve as basis for his own music productions. This free soundset can be requested by sending an e-mail containing the keyword „DTX-M12 Oriental“ to: [email protected] The user will receive an e-mail from EASY SOUNDS with a password and a link where the file can be downloaded.

M O N TAG E „ L I V E O R G A N “ "Live Organ" emulates the sound of the legendary Hammond B3. In order to realise the highest possible authenticity and the original Hammond feeling in a way not been seen before, the samples already contain the slow / fast Leslie and the typical Hammond distortion. The internal effects of MONTAGE like Rotary Speaker or Distortion are not required for this type of sampling.

M O N TAG E „ L I V E I N S T R U M E N T S“ Performance Library with high-quality sounds of the categories piano, electric piano, clavinet, organ, Mellotron, strings, brass section, synth. Popular selection of instruments that are always required by keyboard players in bands. In addition, the Library contains drum sounds and Arpeggio Performances that offer inspiration and idea material for productions.

M O N TAG E „ X TA S Y N “ Up-to-date synth and drum sounds for dance / trance / house / electronica / pop / chill out. Can be used for mainstream chart-oriented productions as well as for progressive dance / trance / techno / eletronic tracks.

The ultimate analogue extension for MONTAGE! Most of them are polyphonic synth sounds like synthbrass, synthstrings, pads, and synthcomps - but you'll also find leadsynths for synthpop, sequencer and arpeggio sounds, and FX sounds.

M O N TAG E „ DA N C E P R O “ Top-of-the-notch selection of modern, powerful Performances for Dance, Trance, House, Pop, and Electronic. Up-to-date commercial and progressive, highly assertive Dance sound. Innovative "DJ Mix" and "Electronic Mix" Performances for intuitive realtime arranging by using the eight Sliders. Easy Edit with eight Assignable Knobs.

M O N TAG E „O R G A N S E S S I O N “ Wonderful smacky organ sounds with concise key click and controllable percussion. Crunchy Hammond sound with adjustable distortion, old-school entertainer organs, sacral drawbar registrations, and cool jazz sounds. Due to the improved distortion and rotary effects, this MONTAGE version of "Organ Session" is even more authentic than the MOTIF version.
