Phys. 207 Waves and Light
Description: Mechanical Oscillations, Transverse & Longitudinal waves, Electromagnetic Oscillations, Electromagnetic Waves, Polarization, Interference and Diffraction. (Prerequist Phys 102)
Objectives: • • • • •
Study of mechanical oscillations. Definition of the harmonic motion and the simple harmonic oscillators. Introduction of waves. Longitudinal and transverse waves. Study of electromagnetic oscillation and production of electromagnetic energy. Propagation of Light. Huygens’s principle Interference and Diffraction
Details: The main objectives of this course are hopefully to be achieved in the following steps:
1. Understanding oscillations and especially the simple harmonic oscillations. 2. Understanding the concept of waves, wavelength, period and phase. 3. Introducing the electromagnetic oscillations which are the source of electromagnetic energy. 4. Associating light to EM oscillations. 5. Understanding the phenomena of interference, polarization and diffraction
