Research Collaborations - Yesterday! Use of sexed semen in Italian Holstein Friesian cows: a field trial D. Marcomin, M. Povinelli, M. Cassandro, L. Gallo and G. Bittante Department of Animal Science, University of Padova, Italy INTRODUCTION The pre-selection of sex of offspring, using sexed sperm, has attracted the interest of dairymen for many decades but only in the last years its became a commercial available reproduction technology (Welch and Johnson, 1999). At the present, the cost of sexed semen is about 3 time the unsexed semen (De Luca, 2002). Therefore, it is important to know the factors affecting the performances of sexed semen on the field conditions. Fertility and genetic levels of herds seem to be the first factors those might affect the benefits of sexed semen (Artuso, 2003).

AIM Analyses on conception rate and percentage of female calves of sexed semen used in field conditions of Italian dairy herds CONCLUSIONS Conception rate of sexed semen was affected by herd fertility performances (e.g. herd average of calving interval) and sire effect. Percentage of female calves was not statistically affected by fertility and genetic herd levels. However, it is clear that an good management level on herd fertility traits improved performances of sexed semen. Statistical description of the herd fertility and genetic performances of dairy herds which used sexed semen (31 herds)
