why
BACK FROM THE BRINK Little Shamsia was on the brink of death when she was brought to a feeding centre run by Save the Children in Niger, west Africa.
Photo: Jonathan Hyams/Save the Children
Aged just one year, she was suffering from severe malnutrition, vomiting and diarrhoea. Shamsia’s mother was terrified her daughter wouldn’t survive.
JUST 28 DAYS LATER… We saw a little girl brought back to life. Our health workers treated Shamsia, and she started to get better and put on weight.
Lantana, Shamsia’s mother
DIE
Every year 6.9 million children under five die needlessly. In the world’s poorest countries, children are killed by illnesses we know how to prevent and treat, such as diarrhoea and pneumonia.
Shamsia was severely malnourished and her life in grave danger
I really thought Shamsia was going to die. But after I brought her to the clinic, she recovered within 28 days. I’m so happy. I never believed it would be possible.
NO CHILD
“Now she’s feeling well and she eats everything,” says Shamsia’s mother, Lantana. “We’re very grateful to the staff here,” Lantana added. “God bless them and help them to continue their work.”
And every single day, thousands face starvation. They’ll never get the chance to fulfil their potential. Together we can stop this. We already save thousands of lives, but you can help us save many, many more.
HOW YOUR money HELPS £5 can pay for ten days’ worth of life-saving food for a malnourished child like Shamsia.

AMY’S CHANCE TO DREAm
why
I’ve waited a year trying to get new beds. I don’t like not being able to do things for my kids.
Across the UK, we’re giving the poorest children the basics they need, from hot meals to blankets – and in Amy’s case a bed. Night after night, in their small flat in London, three-year-old Amy and her sister struggled to sleep on small, broken, rotten beds. The cheap foam mattresses were almost impossible to get clean and Amy started to develop skin complaints. Her mum worried that Amy’s respiratory complaints would get worse. But she simply couldn’t afford new beds for the girls.
“I’ve tried putting money aside but ended up spending it on basics like food and new shoes.”
NO CHILD A CHANCE A shocking 1.6 million children live in severe poverty in the UK. Right now children go to bed hungry. Some sleep night after night on the floor because they don’t have a bed, or are bullied at school because their parents can’t afford to buy them a proper uniform. Every child has hopes and dreams. But many have to struggle against the odds to achieve them. That’s why we’re helping the UK’s poorest children get the chance to fulfil their potential.
BACK TO BASICS Thanks to our Eat, Sleep, Learn, Play programme, we were able to give Amy and her sister new beds – and finally the chance of a good, healthy night’s sleep.
HOW YOUR money HELPS £450 can buy beds for three children in the UK so they don’t have to sleep on the floor.

It was really helpful looking at exactly the sort of things the money would provide. It helped raise funds by making the benefits of the money really tangible to those we were trying to get donations from. Cameron, Coventry

Norman wanted to raise funds for children facing hunger in east Africa.
I decided to step up to the challenge. Playing on my reputation as a cook, I made everyone a curry for lunch. My company matched the funds so everyone had an extra incentive to take part. After a long night of cooking, we made £450.
More than 50,000 people have raised £2 million for us over the past 20 years by holding and playing tennis tournaments up and down the country.

Things to know if you’re organising a big event.
Safety first l
l
Whatever you do, please do it safely. Save the Children cannot accept liability for any loss, damage or injury as a result of fundraising for us. Make sure your venue has been checked for health and safety hazards. Ensure there is adequate access for people with disabilities.
l
Confirm that first aid supplies, firefighting equipment and emergency evacuation procedures are in place.
l
Check what public liability insurance the venue has and that it covers owners’ liability risks.
l
l
Check the legal requirements for entertainment with your local authority or venue provider. Don’t do house-to-house or street collections without permission from your local authority. If you’re thinking of holding a raffle, you’ll need to check about that, too.
Food and drink l
Always ensure any food you’re providing has been stored at an appropriate temperature, hygienically prepared and thoroughly cooked.
l
Visit food.gov.uk for further guidance.
l
If you want to sell alcohol at your party, you’ll need a licence. If the venue already has a licence, then you’ll be covered, but do check.
Recycle Wherever possible, please arrange for rubbish to be recycled after your event.
Safeguarding children Please take extra time to plan fundraising activities involving children. Any fundraisers under the age of 18 should have their parent or guardian’s permission to take part. Make sure children are properly supervised and you’ve made provisions for lost children at events.
