YOUR PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Imagine What’s Possible

EVENTS CALENDAR 2014/2015

THE FOUNDATION FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is an independent, nonprofit organization; our mission is to empower the arts in the community. Together with our partners, Cal Poly and the City of San Luis Obispo, we are able to provide and promote a world-class performing arts center that is accessible to all. During the 18 years since the Center opened its doors, Foundation members have made it possible for the PAC to continually increase its splendor, while remaining affordable for our community and local artists. Thanks to your support last season, we celebrated a watershed year: the School Matinee Program was offered at no cost for the first time; the Spheres sculpture was installed permanently on the PAC plaza, uniting visual and performance art; and 22 local arts groups showcased their work during 96 shows. Without Foundation members that continue to dream as big as our Founders, the magic of the PAC would not be possible. This season, as you walk across the Plaza, enter through the doors of the Hall, take your seat and watch the curtain rise, ask yourself: What’s next? Friends, this is OUR time. It is our time to venture into what’s next – together– as our Founding visionaries did so boldly, nearly thirty years ago. Join us as we embark on a landmark campaign to grow our endowment, preserving the accessibility of the PAC and live arts in our community in perpetuity. It’s time for an Encore.*

Our deepest and heartfelt thanks,

Heather Cochrane, CFRE Executive Director

Clifton Swanson Board of Directors, President

FOUNDATION FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

SPHERES This year, through a generous contribution by the Kohlen Family, Spheres was unveiled on the PAC Plaza. Foundation Legacy member, Patricia Kohlen commissioned the work by artist Ivan McLean. Spheres, a reflection of grace, strength and beauty, underscores the mission of the Center, encouraging all who visit to think deeper about the connections between the visual and performing arts.

LAST YEAR, THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF OUR MEMBERS: 87,000 PEOPLE filled the seats at the PAC in more than 170 shows.

6,000 CHILDREN attended a free school matinee performance.

22 LOCAL ARTISTS showcased their work in 96 shows.

6,000 YOUNG ARTISTS performed on stage.

IMAGINE WHAT WE CAN DO THIS YEAR!

IMAGINE... The PAC falls silent while the house lights dim. As the curtain rises, a thousand children’s eyes alight in wonder, curiosity ignited by a live performance in Harman Hall. For one 5-year old, this experience led to a childhood spent on that very stage with the Youth Symphony… …all the way to a thunderous applause during her final curtain call on the PAC stage last season. Now 18, she studies with the Jacobs School of Music, at Indiana University. Meet Joshelle Conley; her story is real. Your support makes dreams like Joshelle’s a reality for so many.

DID YOU KNOW? Revenue provides less than half of the annual cost of running our Performing Arts Center. Each year, with our partners, The City of San Luis Obispo, and Cal Poly, we provide more than $1.5 million to the PAC, to keep it:

AFFORDABLE: Our annual contribution keeps our PAC affordable for ticket buyers, provides a discounted rental rate for our community arts groups, and funds for cutting-edge technological improvements.

ACCESSIBLE: The Foundation also provides direct access to the live arts for the young people in our community, keeping the program free for local school children.

EXTRAORDINARY: Donors to the Foundation provide the big-ticket items that make the PAC state of the art. Through the Foundation people have made incredible gifts like the Forbes Pipe Organ, the projector and screen used for The Met: Live in HD, a Steinway piano, and, the Meyer Sound Constellation acoustical system.

FOUNDATION FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

San Luis Obispo has an Opera House. It’s called the Performing Arts Center, but it is a GRAND opera house. It is the only theatre between San Francisco and Los Angeles that can hold ANY opera without cutting a single person from the production. The greatest ballets and the greatest operas are waiting to happen at the PAC.

Each time I enter the theatre at the Performing Arts Center, I am transported to a magical place. Music and drama, dance, laughter and lecture open up the world to audiences of all ages. I want to maintain and preserve this beautiful creative space for our community and for future generations. Please join me.
