ABSTRACT The results of 1544 speckle interferometric observations of 637 binary stars, ranging in separation from 0A. 25 to 5A. 25, are tabulated. These observations were obtained using the 66 cm refractor at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, with an intensiÐed CCD detector. This is the Ðfth in a series of papers presenting measures obtained with this system and covers the period 1998 January 1 through December 31. Random errors for all measures are estimated to be 17.6 mas in separation and 0¡.55/o in position angle, where o is the separation in arcseconds. INTRODUCTION

card cage and the motors. This solved a long-standing electronics problem with the rotation of the Risley prisms. Because of possible improper electronic grounding, the Risley prisms, when required to rotate, would intermittently cause a short circuit and require the single-board computer (SBC) to be rebooted, or result in a crash of the SBC. A new, more robust SBC has been interfaced with the existing electronics. ModiÐed code to this new SBC that operates the motor for the Ðlter wheel and Risley prisms in both directions has increased observation efficiency considerably and has improved the operation speed of the camera. Other signiÐcant changes were made to the software code to take advantage of the capabilities of the new SBC. These included timing changes and increasing the control computerÈtoÈSBC modem rate from 300 to 9600 baud. A cathode cooler continues to be used with the camera assembly. This allows the cathode to be cooled approximately 30¡F below the ambient temperature, and thus stars as faint as V \ 11 can be observed. The speckle interferometry detector continues to be that from Electro-Optical Services, Inc. (EOS) (Germain et al. 1999). The image intensiÐer allows stars as faint as 11th magnitude to be observed, despite the extremely short exposure times required in speckle interferometry. During this reporting period, 10- and 20-power microscope objectives were used. For observations of double stars it is often necessary and beneÐcial to observe single stars. These can serve as an idealized point-source function (PSF) to determine the behavior of various elements in the optical chain, and to characterize various reduction algorithms, or can be used to generate artiÐcial double stars or other more complicated morphologies by use of calcite crystals, slit masks, aperture masks, etc. Unfortunately, Ðnding a good list of these calibrator sources is easier said than done. Generally speaking, the more stars that are studied, the higher their multiplicity fraction. What is believed to be a good single star can render vital calibration data useless through the discovery of a previously unknown double star or the slight modiÐcation of the PSF by an unresolved component. The basic data for this list come from the Third Catalog of Interferometric Measures of Binary Stars (Hartkopf, McAlister, & Mason 1999). In addition to publishing mea-

This is the Ðfth in a series of publications presenting the results of speckle interferometric observations of binary stars made with the 66 cm US Naval Observatory (USNO) refractor and an intensiÐed charge-coupled device (ICCD). At the end of 1998, more than 10,700 measures of 1375 pairs had been made. Reported here are the results for 637 pairs, comprising 1544 measures, obtained from 1998 January 1 through December 31, for separations in the range 0A. 25 to 5A. 25 and a limiting secondary magnitude of V \ 11. It continues to be our philosophy to observe all binary systems accessible to our current telescope-detector system. Because of the sensitivity of the ICCD detector, many additional faint objects were added to the observing list in 1998. Consequently, these objects have been observed rarely and less recently than others on the observing list. While new Hipparcos double stars have parameters within the range of the current telescope-detector combination, these remain quite challenging targets. Several rejected observations are of these stars. Algorithms are currently under development that might make these systems more easily measurable. The paper concludes with a tabulation of the observational results. During the reporting period the USNO speckle camera was also used for planetary work. Observations of a mutual event of Io and Europa were obtained in November, and preliminary results were presented at meeting 31 of the AAS Division on Dynamical Astronomy (Mason et al. 1999). Final results are in preparation. 2.

INSTRUMENTATION AND CALIBRATION

The instrumentation has been described in detail in a previous paper (Germain, Douglass, & Worley 1999). A new interference Ðlter replaced the original USNO ““ g ÏÏ twoelement Ðlter on 1998 November 11. The characteristics of the routinely used Ðlters are given in Table 1. Other improvements and upgrades were made to the speckle camera. The power feeds have been separated to the ÈÈÈÈÈÈÈÈÈÈÈÈÈÈÈ 1 Retired.

surements of double stars from interferometry, and lunar occultation measures, this also contains results from various duplicity surveys (n \ 3632). Selected stars from this catalog that are also found in the Bright Star Catalogue (Hoffleit & Warren 1991) with a published null detection from a telescope with an aperture greater than 2 m are then considered (n \ 1769). This list is then of bright stars that have no indication of duplicity by speckle interferometry. Any of these objects that have measures by other techniques are in the current version of the Washington Double Star Catalog (WDS). Further, all of these systems were observed by the Hipparcos satellite (ESA 1997) and they do not have any double star solution (““ C,ÏÏ ““ G,ÏÏ ““ X,ÏÏ ““ V,ÏÏ or ““ O ÏÏ in Ðeld H59 of the main catalog), nor are they ““ suspected nonsingle ÏÏ (““ S ÏÏ code in Ðeld H61). The Ðnal all-sky list contains 1170 systems fulÐlling these criteria. Instrumental calibration is performed by acquiring grating images of one of these bright single stars (Germain et al. 1999). Analysis of the grating image yields the rotation angle of the telescope-camera system, the scale, and the pitch, which is the ratio of the scale in x to the scale in y. The StroŽmgren y Ðlter was used for all grating calibrations. The resultant calibration parameters are listed in Table 2. Note that the ratio of the scales for the two microscope objectives implies a signiÐcant error in the nominal microscope objective powers. The major source of position angle error is the determination of the instrumental rotation. The instrumental rotation angle was subtracted from the position angle derived from the parabolic Ðt to the directed vector autocorrelation images. The calibration parameters remained fairly constant throughout 1998. The speckle interferometer was o† the USNO refractor from August 24 to October 2 for speckle observing of new and problem Hipparcos stars at the McDonald Observatory using the 2.1 m Otto Struve reÑector (Mason et al. 2000). 3.

RESULTS

For 1998 we do not have any observations in common with the Center for High Angular Resolution Astrometry (CHARA) with epoch di†erences less than 1 year. Therefore, we do not feel justiÐed in comparing this current set of USNO data with CHARA data as was done in previous USNO speckle papers. The observations from 1998 January 1 through December 31 are listed in Table 3. For each binary there is an

identiÐer line from the WDS, followed by one or more lines giving the observational data. All stars in this publication have entries in the WDS. The identiÐer line for each binary gives the WDS coordinates (J2000.0) to the nearest 0m. 1 in right ascension and the nearest arcminute in declination, the discoverer designation and number (““ Discov.ÏÏ), component designation if more than two stars in the system are known (““ Comp.ÏÏ), and visual magnitudes from the WDS for each of the components. Following each identiÐer line is the epoch of observation, position angle (h¡), separation (oA), microscope objective (““ M ÏÏ : 10-power or 20-power), Ðlter (““ F ÏÏ : V, g, or y), and an estimate of the quality of the parabolic Ðt (““ Q ÏÏ : G, F, P, or V) in x and y. A ““ G ÏÏ signiÐes a good Ðt with most of the points lying on the x and y parabolas, an ““ F ÏÏ is a fair Ðt with at least three points lying on the parabolas, a ““ P ÏÏ is a poor Ðt with points scattered about the parabolas, and a ““ V ÏÏ is a very poor Ðt with large scatter about the parabolas and a weak and fuzzy secondary image. For the 1544 observations there were 774 observations graded G, 406 graded F, 250 graded P, and 114 graded V. These Ðt grades are subjective and are intended to provide only a qualitative assessment of the measures. More quantitative error estimates may be calculated from the position angle and separation values given in Table 3 for pairs with at least three observations. The mean standard deviation in separation is found to be 17.6 mas, while the error in position angle is 0¡.55/o, where o is the separation expressed in seconds of arc. These errors are for both microscope objectives and reÑect the deviation from a straight-line Ðt. These values are very similar to those found in Germain et al. (1999). 4.

CONCLUSION

Results have been presented of 1544 speckle interferometric observations of 637 binary stars, acquired between 1998 January 1 and December 31, using the USNO 66 cm refractor in Washington, DC, and the EOS ICCD detector. Recent improvements in hardware and software have led to a signiÐcant improvement in observing efficiency. Calibration accuracy has beneÐted from a new, carefully chosen set of bright single calibration stars. Random errors are found to be consistent with those obtained in previous seasons. External calibration in the future will be done by comparison with well-studied orbits. The current orbit catalog of Worley & Heintz (1983) is out of date for this purpose.
