UNITS OF STUDY IN K-2 & 3-5 READING: A CRASH COURSE IN METHODS AND CURRICULUM
These one-day conferences, led by Lucy Calkins and senior colleagues at the TCRWP, are designed to give you an intensive crash course on the methods and content needed to teach a coherent, cross-grade curriculum in reading. The presenter will help you accelerate your students’ progress towards meeting ambitious global standards. You‘ll be brought behind the scenes of the Units of Study for Teaching Reading, K-2 or 3-5, and you’ll learn the underlying methods, principles, and progressions that undergird this reading workshop curriculum. For example, you‘ll learn how read-aloud supports students’ skill development, and you‘ll learn how skills develop as the texts students read become increasingly complex. You’ll grasp ways of supporting kids as they progress up ladders of text and skill complexity. There will be a focus on the special challenges involved in helping students read nonfiction. You will also learn about ways to lift the level of students’ writing and talking about reading. The day will be filled with practical classroom specifics that will position you to lead well-paced, responsive workshops. The Units of Study in Teaching Reading aren't for the weak of heart—they ask a lot of you—but they also make a gigantic difference. When your teaching yields this sort of dramatic growth, it's not just the kids who learn. We all do.
