2018 Outlook for Fog Computing OpenFog Members Survey January 2018

In December 2017, OpenFog Consortium surveyed its 61 member organizations on the state of fog computing. Their responses are found in the following pages. Among the highlights: •

70% of CEOs are aware of fog computing initiatives within their organization. Yes, this was



40% indicated a higher budget for fog in 2018; 75% expect more research grant funding opportunities



For the majority of survey responders, fog is organizationally seated in R&D, followed by New Ventures



IoT is the top application area for fog technology by a wide margin (70%)



What is holding customers back from adopting fog? Security concerns, followed by perception that fog is too new / unproven.



Latency and network bandwidth are the two most-cited reasons customers are interested in fog, but there are many benefits cited.



Manufacturing, smart cities and transportation were the top 3 industries to adopt fog.
