3D Printing Students will write an information report about 3D printing Begin with a class brainstorm to determine what students know about 3D printing and key words associated with it. Provide a range of information reports for students to read. In small groups, ask them to discuss the format and language features of information reports. They can then use the following plan to help them write their report. Information report plan Headings Definition
Students will develop an understanding of how 3D printing works, the products that can be made and the copyright issues.
Key words
Description Important facts about the subject in paragraphs
Summarising comment
Structure of a report Introduction The opening statement explains the subject of the report, and includes a definition or short description. Students need to define what 3D printing is in the introduction.
Students can include photographs, pictures or diagrams in their report.
Description The body of the report is a series of paragraphs giving information about the subject. Each paragraph describes a particular fact about the subject. For example, how 3D printing works, products that can be made using 3D printers and the copyright concerns. The paragraph should begin with a topic sentence and is followed by facts that support it. Conclusion A summary of what has been said. Language features Reports are usually written in the third person. Present tense is often used. A formal, factual style is used.
Support students to follow the draft-edit-publish process to produce their reports. Suggested ways to publish their report include: PowerPoint presentation Oral presentation Reflection If you were to carry out the task again, what would you do differently?
