Introduction and examples What is R?. R provides an environment in which you can perform statistical analysis and produce graphics. It is actually a complete programming language, although that is only marginally described in this book. —Peter Dalgaard, “Introductory Statistics with R”, 2002 R can be viewed as a programming language that happens to come with a large library of pre-defined functions that can be used to perform various tasks.
