Who are ATC? ATC Language & Travel was founded in 1964. Since then we have had the pleasure of welcoming students from many different destinations all over the world. We offer a wide range of English language and examination courses for adults and juniors, to suit all levels of English. ATC is also one of the largest providers of Junior Residential English language programmes in Ireland, which take place in 10 locations nationwide each summer, offering English language tuition to teenagers from around the world. Here in our main centre in Bray we offer English language courses all year round to adults, in addition to in-service teacher development courses and preliminary and initial teacher training courses such as the ACELSaccredited Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELT); and the Preliminary Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Secondary Level Students (State Qualified Teachers). What is the CELT? The Certificate in English Language Teaching is a 120-hour ELT (English Language Teaching) training certificate course. The CELT is designed for those with no previous English language teaching experience, or those with limited experience who wish to further develop and gain an internationally-recognised formal qualification. The course is accredited by NQAI / ACELS (National Qualifications Authority of Ireland / The Accreditation and Coordination of English Language Services www.acels.ie). Successful completion of the course will qualify you to teach English to adults and young learners in Ireland and abroad. However, please note that to teach in a Department of Education & Skills-recognised ELT school in Ireland, you must also hold an NQAI level 7 Qualification, such as an Ordinary Bachelor’s Degree

Who are NAQI / ACELS? NQAI (The National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) is an agency of the Department of Education and Skills. It has responsibility for: 1. The development and maintenance of the National Framework of Qualifications 2. The maintenance and improvement of the standards of Awards in the further and higher education and training sector 3. The promotion and facilitation of access, transfer and progression throughout the span of education and training provision ACELS (Accreditation and Co-ordination of English Language Services) Previously known as The Advisory Council for English Language Schools, in 2010 ACELS became a function of the NQAI. ACELS provides quality assurance for English language services in Ireland through the management and operation of an Inspection/Recognition Scheme for ELT organisations and an Accreditation Scheme for English Language teacher training providers.

CELT Course Duration This course is 120 hours in duration and is run full-time over five weeks in our Dublin City Centre location (Please see website for details). Scheduled into these five weeks are: • Input Sessions (combining theory with hands-on workshops) • Classroom Observations (observing qualified teachers delivering a variety of lessons to international students) • Teaching Practice (TP) (delivering a variety of lesson types to international students in a supported environment) • TP Lesson Preparation (guided, supported preparation of TP lessons with pre- and post-TP feedback from course trainers) • Trainer-directed Study Periods (with access to the Resource Room and a course trainer). CELT Course Schedule Course Input sessions are held from 09:00am to 17:00pm during the first week of the course, and during mornings only from week 2 (09:00am to 13:30pm). From week 2 onward, afternoons are mostly given over to Teaching Practices (TP) when you deliver lessons to ATC’s international students, and Trainer-directed TP Preparation sessions when you work in pairs or small groups under the direction and guidance of your course trainers, to prepare these lessons. Throughout the course we have also scheduled Trainer-directed Study sessions to enable you to work on your assessment tasks, or to engage is further self study, with full access to the school’s resources. These study sessions have a course trainer on hand to direct you in your studies, guide you towards appropriate resources, and give you feedback on your progress. Attendance at these sessions is not obligatory. This 5-week course has been specifically designed to give each participant time and space to assimilate the course content and to focus on assessment requirements in a supportive and stress-free environment, receiving ongoing feedback on progress. Course Fees €950 Course Deposit A deposit of €200 per person is required on booking. Bookings can only be secured by payment of deposit. This will not be refunded if cancellation is made within 5 working days of course commencement. Course Transfer Applicants may transfer to another course once the Course Director is given a minimum notice period of 5 working days. Requests for transfer within 5 working days of course commencement will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Notice must be submitted in writing.

Entry Requirements Applicants must be at least 21 years of age Non-native speakers of English must provide evidence of language proficiency, as outlined below. Acceptance onto the course is subject to a successful interview process. This interview process has two stages: firstly you will be required to do a pre-interview short writing task at home, and secondly you will be asked to come in to the school for a face-to-face meeting with the Course Director, and to complete a few more guided short writing tasks after the meeting. There is no requirement for a specific formal qualification for entry to the CELT programme. However, candidates will need to demonstrate a variety of knowledge, skills and competences in order to be considered for entry. The knowledge, skills and competences outlined below are necessary in order to be able to participate fully and successfully in the CELT programme. Please take a moment to read through them and consider how they apply to you. If you are invited to interview, these will be assessed by the Course Director in the following way: 1. Applicants who are non-native speakers of English must have a minimum C1+ level of English language proficiency, as outlined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (http://www.coe.int ).

Non-native speaker applicants must provide evidence of language proficiency from one of the following examining bodies: • University of Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) Grade A •

IELTS: Band 7

Please note that a copy of the certificate must be submitted with the application. Non-native speaker applicants who have completed an Honours Degree through English do not have to provide evidence of language proficiency from an external examining body. However, a copy of the degree transcript must be submitted with the application.

English language proficiency [native speakers of English]:

Applicants who are native speakers of English should be able to demonstrate that they have a sensitivity to language & language use, and that they can express themselves with clarity & precision when communicating, both orally and through writing.

Written Communication: Applicants must demonstrate that they can write clear, smoothly flowing text in an appropriate & effective style and with a logical structure which helps the reader find significant points. Written work should be free of error such as incorrect spelling and punctuation. Spoken Communication: Applicants must demonstrate that they can converse comfortably, appropriately and clearly.

Study skills: Study skills include: • the ability to co-operate effectively in pair & group work • the ability to organise & use materials & resources for selfdirected learning • the ability to cultivate perceptual, analytical and heuristic skills in order to learn effectively from observation of and participation in teaching situations • an awareness of your own strengths & weaknesses as a learner • the ability to identify your own needs and goals and to organise your own strategies and procedures to pursue these goals

Access to resources needed for successful completion of course:

Candidates should have access to the resources necessary to successfully complete the course. Access to all necessary resources will be provided by the school and free periods are scheduled into the timetable to allow trainees access to these resources. If a trainees cannot, for whatever reason, make use of the resources provided by the school, he/she must ensure that the time, space and resources are available to them outside the school, in order to complete course assignments

FAQs: How is The CELT Course assessed? Assessment of the CELT is carried out through: 1. Teaching Practice (TP) 2. Assessed Tasks (Continuous Assessment) 1. Teaching Practice As part of the course requirements you will be required to carry out a minimum of 6 hours assessed teaching practice (TP) over the duration of the course. These lessons will be delivered to international students studying with ATC. You will be given the opportunity to deliver different types of lessons, to different levels of students. Each TP is preceded by a TP Preparation session allowing you to prepare for your lessons in a supported environment with a trainer on hand to guide and advise, and full access to the school’s resources. The lessons will be observed and assessed by experienced ELT trainers. After each TP you will be given extensive written and oral feedback by your assessor. 2. Assessed Tasks You will be given number of assessment tasks to complete over the course of the programme, some of which you will submit during the course and some of which you will submit 5working days after the end of the course. These assessment tasks aim to help you assimilate the content of the course and contribute towards a portfolio of work that can be used for teaching purposes in your future career as an ELT professional. The assessment tasks cover the following six core modules: 1. Exploring the Teaching of the Four Skills 2. Approaches & Methods 3. Analysing & Contextualising Language 4. Materials Evaluation 5. Developing a Learner Profile 6. Learning Strategies You will be given lots of support and guidance by your trainers in completing these tasks, receiving extensive feedback on each. Dedicated time is scheduled into the timetable as ‘trainer-directed study sessions’, allowing you to work on your assessed tasks in the school, using the school’s resources, under the direction of the course trainers.

At the end of the course you will submit a portfolio. A portfolio is a collection of your work that represents your learning and development as a teacher over the duration of the course. It is an important document that can showcase your achievements and thus is often presented at interview for ELT positions. Typically a portfolio will contain a mixture of pieces required for assessment (i.e. your assessment tasks) and pieces that are not required for assessment but have been included for display or reference purposes, such as interesting ideas you picked up when observing practising teachers or a bank of resources you collected over the course. Those who successfully complete the course, by meeting course requirements as established by NQAI ACELS, are awarded a Certificate in ELT (CELT). Successful candidates will be awarded one of the following grades on their Certificate: Approved with Distinction / Approved+ / Approved What Qualification will I receive and what work options are available? Candidates who are awarded the Certificate are qualified to teach English as a foreign, second or additional language to adults and juniors, in Ireland and abroad. However, please note that only those who hold a Level 7 Qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications, or equivalent, will be eligible to teach in a Department of Education & Skills-recognised ELT school. To check the level of your qualification, or to check the recognition of an international qualification, please go to www.nqai.ie. During the course we look at the ELT industry in Ireland and abroad. We point our trainees in the right direction for sourcing ELT jobs and prepare them for ELT interviews. As the biggest provider of junior summer programmes in Ireland, we will recruit from our CELT courses for our summer centres when possible. How much of the course do I have to attend in order to qualify for the Award? It is a course requirement that attendance on the course must be a minimum of 90% and attendance at TP 100% to be considered for the Award. Who are the trainers? All our trainers are highly qualified English Language Teachers and Teacher Trainers with a variety of teaching experience between them. Each trainer has a special area of interest that he / she will focus on during the course. What happens after I send my application in? Provided you meet the preliminary admission requirements you will be contacted by email by the Course Director and invited to attend an interview. You will receive a letter from the Course Director within 5 working days to inform you of your acceptance or non acceptance on to the course. Does ATC have a policy on disability? Yes, it is our policy to facilitate applicants with disabilities, in any way we can. ATC is fully wheelchair accessible. We have technology in-house which may be used as assistive technology, such as digital voice recorders and electronic whiteboards for the visually impaired. Should we receive an enquiry from an applicant with a disability the Course Director will contact the applicant and the Association for Higher Education Access & Disability to discuss how we could enable full access to and participation in the training course.
